I’m really excited about Beasts of the Southern Wild. It looks absoutely magical.
World Cinema Jury Prize: Dramatic – Violeta Went to Heaven (Violeta se Fue a Los Cielos)
Yay! A film from my silly lil’ Chile winning big time
Also of note:
Ava DuVernay, the best director winner for Middle of Nowhere, just might be the first black woman ever to win the award at the festival!
Correct me if I’m wrong!
Middle of Nowhere was absolutely fantastic! I’m so glad for Ava DuVernay, and the lead actress in the film I hope gets some recognition, she was stunning.
I cannot wait to see Beasts of the Southern Wild. It sounds very unique and interesting.
Don’t they usually give awards for best actor/actress too?
The Surrogate seems to be an Oscar threat, given the cast.
I Just went to see both The House I Live In and Beasts of the Southern Wild at their final Sundance screenings and both were incredible. BOTSW will likely not be a serious awards contender, but the film is passionate and imaginative and will certainly find an appreciative audience – especially now that it’s been picked up by Fox Searchlight. THILI, on the other hand, should be a serious contender for Best Doc next year, in a just world. But, as the Academy keeps reminding us year in and year out, the Academy Award for Best Documentary is far from a just race.
Those are my two cents. Everyone should be very excited that these films have received distribution.
The Surrogate, it seems, has Oscar written all over it. Especially, the character that John Hawkes portrays in the film (a paraplegic polio-victim….what is about portraying disabilities that wins you an Oscar??)
From what I read, it’s a wonderfully meaty role (complimented excellently by Helen Hunt’s stunning turn), and according to the folks at Sundance, a shoo-in for an Oscar nomination next year.
