The Artist tops innaugural AACTA awards
Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts awards (Formerly known as the Australian Film Institute awards)
Best Picture: The Artist
Best Director: Michel Hazanavicius, The Artist
Best Actor: Jean Dujardin, The Artist
Best Actress: Meryl Streep, The Iron Lady
Best Screenplay (tie): Ides of March & Margin Call
AACTA president Geoffrey Rush announced the winners in five categories in West Hollywood at Soho House. Awards in other categories will be announced next Tuesday.
“As our industry becomes a truly global entity, it is fitting that the new Australian Academy recognizes the industry’s best, both at home and abroad,” Geoffrey Rush said.
Although the Australian Film Institute has been in existence for more than a half-century, the academy was created last summer as a professional offshoot and modeled after the branch structure of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. AACTA currently has between 1,500 and 2,000 members.
“We’re hoping it’s the beginning of a great tradition,” said AACTA CEO Damian Trewhella.(THR)
Trewhella said
The AACTA Intl. Awards are designed to honor film excellence regardless of geography, as determined by a jury of Australian entertainment professionals.

VERY impressive for Hazanavicious to beat out Jean Dujardin for Best Actor
Congrats to Streep! All winners are excellent choices.
Who win the best actor?? kkkkkkkk
“modeled after the branch structure of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences”
Hmmm. Wise choice? Could result in more of the same.
Georgie won the Best Actor award.
“…modeled after the branch structure of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.”
Wanted: 1000 retired Australian filmmakers needed to watch 8 screeners per year.
HA – exactly! Too bad they couldn’t find a mix of industry and critics, a sampling of both sides of film makers and consumer/experts.
I guess the winner was Jean Dujardin :O
VERY interesting to see Michel Hazanavicious beat out Jean Dujardin, Brad Pitt and George Clooney for Best Actor =)) :d
I think he deserve it:D
A sampling of film-makers, consumers and experts would be something akin to the American Film Institute.
oh ooops, I meant actor/director Jean-Michel Supercalifragilisticexpialidocuous
can you tell how much of shit I don’t give at this point?
thanks guys. I wasn’t fully awake when I posted this. Will try harder not to remain half-asleep for the entire month of February.
Wait — no big ceremony? Much less a ceremony held IN AUSTRALIA??? Even BAFTA gets actors to actually fly to London for the ceremony!
Sheesh, could you imagine if the Oscar winners were simply announced by Morgan Freeman from somewhere in Toronto?
(Actually, that might not be a bad idea….)
guys, i just want to ask if someone knows, at least substantial number of academy members in this group of australian actors and entertainers?
How is that possible when The Artist doesnt even come out in Australia until next week…
These are a load of crap considering the Artist isn’t even out in Australia yet, and I doubt they’d get screeners…
Yes, as a member of AACTA (formerly AFI), I am bemused and frustrated that a movie can win an award even before it has screened in Australia – i have no idea how many people decided these international prizes – the rest of the awards were decided after member sreenings last Sept/October around the country. It really needs to reflect the year in film – 2011 – when films like Black Swan (released 20 January 2011), Another Year (27th Jan, 2011) and True Grit (26th Jan, 2011) – I guess the remodelled Australian Film Awards wants to be seen as a relevant player on the
world stage. I would rather it reflect the local industry only.
I’m surprised that the ceremony didn’t take place in Australia . After all, this is AUSTRALIAN academy awards … But i’m glad for Jean n The Artist. They totally deserve it!
The AACTAs are taking place Tuesday night in Sydney. The awards announced over the weekend are just the “international” component, with highlights to screen during the show.
I think it’s smart to announce the international prizes in L.A. during the annual “G’Day USA” festivities that happen in L.A. this time of year for Australians working in Hollywood and abroad.
And screeners for “The Artist” did go out. As did screeners for most of the other contenders.
Wjat I am not sure about is what is supposed to be the eligibility requirements for these 5 categories – U.S. release date?
