I didn’t know about that meaning, thanks for the clarification Mr. Adams 😀
Maybe I’m mixed up, but I don’t think Antoinette is trying to say the movie is hyped.
She’s saying it’s gorgeous, great, the shit.
“the shit” is the exact opposite of “shit”
@Antoinette @iggy The most suitable meaning for ‘ser la bomba’ expression in spanish is possibly this: ‘to be gorgeous’. But no way means: ‘the shit’. Referred to ‘bombo’, it can be translated as ‘hype’ in phrases like this: ‘The Skin I Live In has been given a lot of hype’ (Se le ha dado mucho bombo a La piel que habito).
The BP nominees
The Skin I Live In
No habrá paz para los malvados (No Rest for the Wicked)
Blackthorn
La voz dormida (The Sleepy Voice)
@Antoinette, maybe you meant it was “la bomba”, meaning it’s “the shit”? “Bombo” main meanings refer to a musical instrument or to slang for baby bump :).
@chatan Chico & Rita was submitted to Goya Awards last year and won. This year seems that Wrinkles has everything to win, since it has been, along with Chico & Rita, the spanish first movie to be nominated to the Annies.
SPANISH FILM ACADEMY MAKES A BIG MISTAKE FOR NO CHOOSE “THE SKIN I LIVE” FOR OSCAR. I THINK THAT THEY DON’T LIKE THAT ALMODOVAR WINS ANOTHER OSCAR. IT WILL BE THE SAME HISTORY OF “TALK TO HER” THAT YEAR THEY CHOOSE ANOTHER PICTURE FOR OSCAR COMPETITION AND FINALLY AMPAS GIVE ALMODOVAR OSCAR FOR BEST SCREENPLAY AND NOMINATION FOR BEST DIRECTOR. THAT YEAR SPAIN LOSE AN OSCAR. WE NEED TO SEE IF THEY DECIDE GIVE THE GOYAS TO “THE SKIN i LIVE” OR IT WILL BE THE SAME HISTORY ABOUT NO GOYAS FOR TALK TO HER”
The Skin I Live In was one of my favorite movies of the year and the performances were powerful. I wish the movie would get some Oscar love but no way in hell is it getting a nomination in any category. Also love that the Irish nominated Kristen Wiig for Best Actress. I think she deserves an Oscar nom although I’m probably in the minority.
where is the MEjor PElicula / best picture category?
most categories looks like carbon print.
Chico & Rita was elegible? or it misses the animation category. Arrugas/Wrinkles make it (eelgible for oscars too)
Lets see how would go to Pedro, the Goyas usually are unkind with him.
I don’t speak Spanish but THE SKIN I LIVE IN was the bombo. (I hope that doesn’t mean something bad). My second favorite movie of the year so far. 🙂
@Jesus, that’s some interesting information about the Goyas! I’m not sure your criticism would ever be heard though. The voting committee for the Goyas (just like those voting committees for film awards in other countries) will argue that their objective is to promote homegrown cinema.
I was actually surprised to see Woody Allen make the cut here. They might still be swooning over him ever since he gave them Vicky Christina Barcelona.
Slightly OT but the IFTAs have also announced their nominees (http://ifta.ie/nominees/scriptfilm.html) – not that they have any are that relevant or impact on the Oscar race (but then, neither do the Goyas.)
Main categories of interest:

Surprised Cillian Murphy or Colin Farrell haven’t been nominated – they’re usually nominated by default! (along with Gleeson, Ronan and Fassbender.)
interesting to see Jane Eyre get a mention. Wasikowa is the best actress of her generation
This is surprisingly easy to follow.
also, The Skin I Live In has the worst trailer I’ve seen all year. Anybody else know what I mean?
Back to this year, so happy for Almodovar. It’s his best, most daring film since Talk to Her. And hopefully Banderas wins, too.
In an usual xenophobic mood, “Midnight in Paris” just scores a Best Original Screenplay nom. Among the foreigners that have lost a Goya: Nicole Kidman (The Others… actually the 4 nominated performers from that movie), Ryan Reynolds (Buried), Sarah Polley (My Life Without Me) or Rachel Weisz (Agora)… the exception being Benicio del Toro (Che, Part I) which I may note, is spanish speaking.
But if you’re anglosaxon and related with Hollywood, the issue is completely beyond your options. The most painful example maybe being Kidman in The Others and the complete snub of even a nom to Sarah Polley and Tim Robbins for The Secret Life of Words, as both movies went on to win Best Picture.
The only Best Picture winner I’m 100% agreed on, in the last decade is Javier Fesser’s Camino.
These nominations for La piel que habito are richly deserved. A gorgeously rendered and resonant film.
Ha, it’s in Spanish. Love it.
Interesting that different award bodies repeat the same patterns: previous winners who become default nominees (Maribel Verdú, Pilar López de Ayala), coaster nominations (as much as I liked the movie, I think Jan Cornet’s part was too short), nominations for movies yet unseen but that had qualifying runs (La chispa de la vida)or its share of star power (Antonio Banderas,Salma Hayek) and local TV star José Mota. No red carpet, though, the sponsor’s corporative color is green.
All in all, a great variety of movies for not such a good year in financial terms, which only goes to prove wrong those haters who claim Spanish cinema is only about Civil war themes and gratuitous nudity.
“Un Dios Salvaje” is actually Carnage
In other news, the Denver Film Critics Society has posted its winners (a day late).
http://denverfilmcritics.org/727/news/the-tree-of-life-the-descendants-reign-supreme-with-denver-area-film-critics/#more-727
Their nominees were in a strange order which I speculated might have been their order of preference. Most of their winners were at the top of their nomination lists, so I imagine I might have been right…
I ought to try to be relevant here, though, so I’ll say that the Goyas’ love for The Skin I Live In is as predictable as it is ridiculous. It’s the only Almodovar film which I dislike.
iggy gives us the tally:
16 – The Skin I Live In
14 – No habrá paz para los malvados (No Rest for the Wicked)
12 – Eva
11 – Blackthorn
9 – La voz dormida (The Sleepy Voice)
