13th Annual No Guts, No Glory (sticky)
Okay my good friends, dear readers, haters, and Oscar watchers our final No Guts, No Glory for the year. We’ve been doing this a long time. You remember the rules.
Up to three and they have to be outlandish predictions, something that really isn’t being predicted to win. Predicting Meryl Streep to win in Best Actress really doesn’t qualify. Predicting Rooney Mara does. I am already predicting A Separation to win in original screenplay in an upset (but you should not follow suit – the most likely winner there is either Midnight in Paris or The Artist).
Here are mine.
1. Harry Potter wins visual effects
2. Max Von Sydow upsets in Supporting Actor

3. Anything other than “A Separation” winning Best Foreign Language Film
1. Harry Potter wins art direction.
2. Girl With The Dragon Tatoo wins any oscars (i think it deserves one somewhere)

Alright, Im going this way
1. Mara for Actress
2. OIdman for Actor
3. Bridesmaids for Screenplay (just to see Wiig accept an Oscar)
if any of these happen I’d be blown away and jumping off my couch like a firecracker was under my ass.

The Academy loves Scorsese and they clearly love Hugo, too, so even though a lot of people consider ‘Hugo’ the runner-up, I think it is a viable NGNG-pick because in the 3 big categories (picture, director, screenplay), it only won ONE big award (Scorsese’s Golden Globe), so without prominent picture/screenplay awards and SAG nominations, it doesn’t seem as strong as it probably should be.
The Davis-Streep duo is so damn close, I could see them canceling each other out, not to mention Michelle Williams definitely HAS a case : she won the most critics group Best Actress awards (10); received all 4 big nominations (SAG-BAFTA-BFCA-HFPA),and won a Golden Globe; the Weinstein-machine is in her corner, too; the babe-factor (something we should NOT underestimate); she is ALSO considered overdue, this is her third nomination, second in a row; her film was well-received unlike ‘The Iron Lady’; she is playing an AMERICAN (!) CINEMATIC (!) ICON (shouldn’t that hit closer to home than a British politician and a 60s era maid ?); it could be the Academy’s way of ‘awarding’ the never-even-nominated Marilyn Monroe (the 50th anniversary of her death is this year, too); and she is the perfect age as strange as it sounds.
And I have a weird theory why Brad Pitt MIGHT win : the big organizations that failed to award him (BAFTA, HFPA, SAG) ignored The Tree of Life…the Academy didn’t. I guess my question is : what if ‘The Tree of Life’ voters – who were non-existent at SAG, BAFTA, HFPA, but are definitely prominent in the Academy (picture AND director nods) – get behind Pitt ? Could that be enough for an upset ?
The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo for Best Editing
Tintin for Best Score
Rio for Best Song
1.REAL IN RIO best song
2.HUGO vfx
3.DRIVE sound editing
The Artist wins 0 awards
Michelle Williams Best Actress
Brad Pitt Best Actor
The Help Best Picture
MICHELLE WILLIAMS FOR BEST ACTRESS (SOOOO HOPING THIS HAPPENS, TRULY THE BEST)
A SEPARATION WINS SCREENPLAY, LOSES FOREIGN FILM TO IN DARKNESS
TERRENCE MALICK WINS DIRECTOR
Tilda Swinton and Michael Fassbender will be nominated due to incorrect counting of the votes and will end up winning as well.

3. Michelle Williams — best actress
1. Max von Sydow
2. Gary Oldman
3. Terrence Malick
1. ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2′ for Visual Effects and Art Direction (God knows this movie deserved it!)
2. ‘In Darkness’ for Foreign Language Film
3. ‘A Separation’ for Original Screenplay
A tie between Streep and Davis for Best Actress!
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy wins Best Adapted Screenplay!
Not actually predicting any of these, of course.
1. The Descendants takes Picture AND Editing
2. A Descendants/Moneyball split gives Adapted Screenplay to Tinker Tailor, like at the BAFTAs
3. Harry Potter pulls a “Bourne Ultimatum” surprise and wins all 3 categories it’s nominated for.
Oh, and Berenice Bejo for Best Supporting Actress
1. W.E. wins Best Costume
2. In Darkness wins Best Foreign Language Film
3. If a Tree Falls wins Best Documentary Feature Film
Rooney Mara wins best actress.
The Artist wins best picture/director.
big bad boring award season.
NGNG:
Best Picture: The Help
Original Screenplay: Bridesmaids
Score: Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy
Hugo
Martin Scorsese
Brad Pitt
Michelle Williams
Max Von Sydow
Well, they are actually the ones I really Think will win, so my only NGNG one is W.E. for costumes…
No Guts, No Glory:
1. Gary Oldman wins Best Actor for Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.
2. Melissa McCarthy wins Best Supporting Actress for Bridesmaids.
3. Woody Allen wins Best Director for Midnight in Paris.
1. Wild Life for Best Animated Short
2. Brad Pitt in Moneyball for Best Actor
3. Kung Fu Panda 2 for Best Animated Feature
I’m going to have to do 4:
1. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (Adapted Script)
2. Jessica Chastain (Supp Actress)
3. Alberto Iglesias (TTSS – Original Score)
4. Brad Pitt (Best Actor)
@Mark V – I have to disagree. The only upsets will be in the short film categories (though no one ever knows how to pick these, so they’re almost always upsets), cinematography and Visual Effects.
Actress is either Meryl Streep or Viola Davis. Either way, no surprise there.
Documentary – Harvey Weinstein is backing Undefeated, so therefore it MUST win. Otherwise, HW will go after voters big time! That said, it actually is a good documentary. Not as good as the snubbed Project Nim, Interrupters and We Were Here, but good of the ones nominated.
Art Direction will go to Hugo. The only film I think that could have upset it is TTSS, and that’s not even nominated.
Original Screenplay is either Midnight in Paris or The Artist. No third party could even upset. Let’s face it…despite the greatness of A Separation and its script, Asghar Farhadi is no Almodovar. Plus, the whole Iranian controversy these days will make the liberal and very politically-minded voters want to vote against the film in someway, I think.
1. Glenn Close wins Best Actress (go Glenn!)
2. Berenice Bejo wins Best Supporting Actress
3. Rio wins Best Song (only two nominess… what a joke)
1. Hugo wins for costume design – and Sandy Powell does another “the rest of you are losers” speech
2. Berenice Bejo gets supporting
3. Pentecost for short (go Ireland!)
Max von Sydow wins Best Supporting Actor
Berenice Bejo wins Best Supporting Actress
A Separation wins Best Original Screenplay
These are probably the least adventurous NGNG choices I’ve made since I started. I should be ashamed of myself lol.
Hugo – Best Picture
Martin Scorsese – Director
Kung Fu Panda 2 – Best Animated Film (so much better than Rango)
Harry Potter wins Visual Effects and thats it I really think there is not going to be many upsets.
Bichir for Actor – I will forego every other prediction to just have this happen!!
Mara and Davis Tie Actress
Bridesmaids Screenplay
Glenn Close for Actress
Gary Oldman for Actor
Hugo for Best Picture!!!
…a girl can dream
Robert Richardson (Hugo) for best Cinematography.
Richardson’s lenswork was far superior to that in Tree of Life. Hugo was a splendid display of what 3D can do! On the other hand, I found ToL’s images to be fuzzy and blurry throughout. At first, I thought something was wrong with my 3D glasses, but nope, went back to see Hugo and the images were as clear and striking as ever.
No Guts No Glory:
A Cat in Paris wins Best Animated Feature.
Malick and Woody both win, leaving two Oscars un-collected.
Hugo gets NOTHING
1. Tinker Tailor for adapted screenplay
2. A Separation for original screenplay
3. Hugo wins six awards — all tech.
The Oscars have become a bore. They only serve to rubber stamp other awards now, as if confirming their verdicts. The Emmys and Globes have become more exciting, and lately have made better selections. That’s just sad.
No Guts No Glory!
The Help = Best Picture
Tree of life/Terence Malick = Best Director
A Separation = Screenplay

Terence Malick wins BEST DIRECTOR
Terrence Malick deserves to win!

Terrence Malick wins the Best Director award for “The Tree of Life” (my 2nd biggest hope)

3- A Separation wins nothing

Martin Scorsese for Best Director
I’ll be leaning more toward deserved-but-surprise wins.

@Phantom-That is the BEST case I have heard made this year for Michelle Williams upsetting. I never thought about the fact that some of the Academy might use it as a means to honor Marilyn.
Chico & Rita wins Best Animated Feature.
Wildlife wins Best Animated Short.
Berenice Bejo wins Best Actress (that’s right, Best Actress, not Best Supporting Actress–sorry, Harvey, you backed the wrong horses for the Best Actress race, and for my outside-the-box call I’m looking for a write-in vote by the Academy that will set things straight).

Thanks, Christopher ! Usually I like to toy with the magical – though almost always completely unrealistic – ‘lucky third’ scenario, but this year I brought it up simply because I cannot remember a year when two acting contenders in the same category were so damn close as Davis and Streep seem to be at the moment…so if they are really splitting votes, they might cancel each other out and allow Williams take it…she IS a remarkably viable option after all.

Jean Dujardin lost the Cesar ? Now that’s newsworthy for sure ! For the record, Untouchable is a good film, a crowdpleaser, just like ‘The Artist’, Sy was great in it, and considering the huge business the film has been doing in France (and Germany), this victory shouldn’t be that much of a surprise. It had to win somewhere…

The whole Mark Wahlberg thing is complete nonsense.
First of all, only the two accountants know the results. The team that works for the Oscars actually doesn’t.
Then again, even if he were friends with Wahlberg, he wouldn’t tell him anything because he would fear he’s going to reveal something to the press. And believe me, if anything like that happens, we all know this person will be fired right away. And an accountant would know for sure that this will be the end of the Academy’s relationship with PWC.
Maybe Marky Mark picked up a signal from a surveillance device that feeds into the receiver hidden in his third nipple.

Dujardin and Clooney tie
Midnight in Paris sweeps
Melissa McCarthy wins
You know after reading these posts and sitting down and thinking a moment since we all pretty much agree that the AMPAS members are really people just like most of us is it possible that as we look at the NGNG postings that some of academy members or even in fact a great many of them might mirror our own projections? Is it possible that Close or Williams could walk away with Best Actress? Is it possible that Brad Pitt can pull off winning Best Actor? Actually I think if anyone is going to pull off Best Actor it will probably be Clooney but I have a feeling that Pitt could also throw tomorrow night up in the air so too speak. There are definitely some NGNG predictions or wishes here that will never come to fruition and the one I would suppose is the most likely to fall is Malick for direction. But what if the Academy has the same ambivilance to the films released this year as most of us have already cited over the last six months. Maybe that’s a little hopeful but it could happen. I’m wondering if the NGNG could really be a precursor.
Best Score: The Vertigo flak trips up Ludovic Bource and John Williams wins, for War Horse
Best Supporting Actress: Berenice Bejo
Best Foreign Film: In Darkness (a Holocaust film; plus a make-up to Agnieszka Holland, who was robbed 20 years ago for Europa, Europa!)
Zoey
since this is the last year that the academy with pwc it maybe true anyways if thats true so be it
Mark Wahlberg likes to hear himself talk. PWC never tells a soul; that’s their bread and butter. It’s funny that Wahlberg’s “revelation” contains most of the safe choices, so that no one might know if he was bluffing or not. AMPAS can’t be pleased either way.
Best Director: Martin Scorsese
Best Documentary: Pina
Best Foreign Film: Monsieur Lazhar
1. Tree of Life wins all 3 (Picture, Director, and Cinematography)

@ Lucy,
Actually is it the last year of PWC?
They will count again despite of the change.
And of course, even if they don’t count next year, do you believe they want to have that image? And who is going to hire them if that’s their image?!
@ Dennis Bee,
actually he has HUGO for costumes and cinematography. So we’ll get him there.
No guts no glory?
The Help leaves the Oscars empty handed, mirroring The Color Purple.
Ingloriously.

3) I’ll go with “Paradise Lost III” in the Doc category–since recently its chances have been downplayed.
Bernice Bejo for S. Actress
Bridesmaids for O. Screenplay
Jonah Hill for S. Actor
1) “The Tree of Life” sweeps
2) “Midnight in Paris” wins Art Direction
3) “The Artist” joins “Gangs of New York” and “True Grit” (2010) as an 0 for 10 Oscar loser — “The Turning Point” and “The Color Purple” share the notorious reacord of going 0 for 11 at the Oscars. I’d say “Hugo” might join them, but I think it’s got a chance with the sound categories and Visual Effects — but I wouldn’t be surprised if “Hugo” does come up goose egg.

I voted, but none of these choices really reflect how I feel about this year. I felt that this was a pretty good year for movies. The Academy’s choices were a mix of great and not so great.
@leonjmurray, just a quibble… I was heavily following Zeusefer’s Predictions Site the year of The Pianist, and with all the compiling of stats that site was doing, they actually had Brody AND Polanski picked for the wins. I don’t quite know how they arrived at that, I just know that I went with it and ended up with a nice little, seemingly “upset” victory in my friends’ Oscar pool.
