3rd Annual Fangirl Awards

Our Twitter pal @loquaciousmuse, founding fangirl of The Fangirl Academy, has announced the winners of the 3rd Annual Fangirl Awards. Though these honors encompass TV, video games, graphic novels and other exotic realms, I’ll only import the film awards. Check out AllThingsFangirl for complete details of the ceremony (where the winners are highlighted in fancy fonts of Gold, Silver & Bronze — girl magic far beyond my meager male abilities.)

  1. Interesting: actor/actress I most want to marry: not a person of color in the nominations…………………………..

  2. I was surprised too! But the 106 Fangirls voted, and all Fangirls are welcome to join, then nominate and vote for whatever and whomever they love most. Just the way the chips fell this year. Nothing sinister going on, I promise.

Yeah, and that means they are all racists.

  4. Yeah, the person of color thing is a pointless argument to make. Attraction is attraction and as we know, most major young actors are white anyway. Let’s not blame the fangirls for this one.

Also: Benedict Cumberbatch wins today’s “I had no idea who the hell that was” award. Weird, I saw War Horse and Tinker Tailor but the name escaped me.

  5. Some nice choices but these people have obviously never seen Spartacus.

  7. Good grief: Michael Fassbender’s name showed up FOUR times in either 1st or 2nd place. I though I was obsessed…obviously I still have some work to do.

But I have to say, overall these voters have better taste than the Academy.

And on the lack of POC in the “want to marry” categories: It’s not about blatant racism, but this presumption that only white actors under 35 are desirable to the masses. As a Black woman myself, I have a problem with that. It’s arbitrary & lazy listmaking; there are PLENTY of folks who would love to marry Halle Berry, Idris Elba, Zoe Saldana, Kerry Washington, etc. Personally, I have a little crush on Michael Pena (Crash, Tower Heist), but I guess he’s not buzzy enough to make this list.

With that said, I have ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEM with Gosling at 1 and Fassbender at 2. Those would have been my picks in that order. Maybe she should have created “Hottest three-way” category too… :)

I’m assuming that’s why Tom Hardy wasn’t on their list.

  9. I don’t think they’re racist. But I do think it suggests that the Fangirl readership is predominantly white….

Weird how any simple mention of racial disparity makes at least one person comment that we’re therefore accusing people of being racist — why is that?
