Ace Eddie Preview and Predictions
It’s a bit of a no-brainer, the Ace Eddie this year. The only time a film nominated for the Eddie in Musical/Comedy went on to win Best Picture was with Chicago. It then went on to win the editing prize at the Oscars. But they only started dividing up the awards in 1999. Before that, they had only five. Thus, when Shakespeare in Love won Best Picture it didn’t win the Eddie first, Saving Private Ryan did.
Therefore, I’m not sure what the Eddie might tell us (we’ll run into this same problem, incidentally, with the WGA, also this weekend). It will give The Artist the win in Musical/Comedy, which puts it probably in the first place position to win the Oscar — Eddie + Best Picture win usually means Oscar win for editing. The one time it didn’t match was in 2000, when Gladiator won the Eddie + Best Picture but then lost the editing Oscar to Traffic, which won the Directing Oscar too.
Before that, in 1984 Amadeus won the Eddie + Best Picture but lost the Oscar for editing to the Killing Fields. That means there is like a 99% chance The Artist will win the Oscar for editing.
If it’s going to have any competition at all in that category it could be from the film that wins the Eddie in Drama. If it were me, I would not be able to NOT vote for Thelma Schoonmaker for Hugo. Schoonmaker was with Marty through every step of Hugo. They literally sat side-by-side as tells it with their 3-D glasses over their regular glasses, editing it first in 2-D (I’m pretty sure) and then in 3-D. It is a feat of directorial and editing, this film. And Schoonmaker is a star. She’s just the coolest thing since sliced bread and much of the reason Scorsese is as free with his camera as he is; she comes in a cleans everything up. So I can’t really entertain anyone else winning this category. But if Thelma stepped aside, I would want it to go to Dragon Tattoo. That The Descendants and Moneyball showed up here shows what kind of support they have overall.

I would love Dragon Tattoo to win here – it’d be Baxter / Wall’s second ACE Eddie in as many years, which makes it yet more unlikely than it already is, but I think it’s the most deserved.
I had a few little issues with Hugo’s editing, I’m ashamed to say. I won’t go into them here though. I’m not even completely sure of what they are. You’re right, though, Sasha, about Thelma Schoonmaker. What a legend.
My predictions:
ACE Comedy – The Artist
ACE Drama – Hugo
Oscar – Hugo
My personal pick – Hugo
Should have been nominated – The Tree Of Life
Just have seen the Artist in cinema. Editing was really good. I also like the performances. But my favorite picture is The Descendants. It’s not about cinema – it’s about us. Even cold Hugo is more touching than that. The Artist will win only because of anti technology vote (as Hurt Locker bested Avatar). But I’m not Academy. They’re working for cinema industry and will like both cinema themed films more than The Descendants. Worst Oscar ever!!!
Good to know I can safely predict the Artist for Editing
I was thinking Schoonmaker could sneak in for the win here but I doubt it.
My predictions:
ACE Comedy/Musical – The Artist
ACE Drama – Hugo
Oscar – The Artist
My personal pick – Hugo
Should have been nominated – Drive
Should have been edited – Tree of Life
Should have been edited – Tree of Life
Loved this!
^
second that.
The Tree of Life featured the very best editing this year.
Hugo should win the Oscar.
…but I wouldn’t mind a TGWTDT win either.
I love Thelma Schoonmaker, I adore Thelma Schoonmaker, but a 4th oscar or even the eddie for Hugo is a little too much in my opinion. I’ve seen hugo two times, I love the movie, is great, but I’ve seen some editing imperfection… not Thelma Schoonmaker best work, no.
Yea, Tree of Life was major snubbed here and with the Academy. Editing in that film is seamless.
Going off subject but if there was ever a movie about Martin Scorsese this guy should play him:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0472710/
@ Niles – why?
I had a chance to meet Thelma Schoonmaker when she was nominated (and later won) for The Departed at the annual “Invisible Art, Visible Artists” seminar at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood (anyone interested in the art of editing, I highly recommend it). She was the nicest person and had some amazing insight into the craft. I’ve seen the five nominated films for Editing and while my favorite wasn’t considered (that’d be The Tree of Life), I’d been happy to see Schoonmaker take home a fourth deserving award for Hugo.
Schoonmaker is about as legendary as film editors get. Given that she’s already won the Oscar 3 times (Raging Bull, Aviator, The Departed), it’s probably not going to happen the 4th time without her film being the BP favorite sadly. Hugo would be my personal pick. But she SHOULD add another Eddie to the mantle if all goes according to plan.
Will Win Oscar: The Artist
Should Win Oscar: Hugo
Runner-Up for Should Win Oscar: Moneyball
Michael Kahn deserves this walking away for either of his efforts. HE is the best editor ever.
Thelma Schoonmaker and Dede Allen really set the standard for film editors – nobody can touch the bar they set. Allen passed away last year(?) and I don’t know how many films Thelma still has in her. I’m certain she’ll take the Ace and would love to see her get another Oscar not only for Hugo, but the ones she missed (Woodstock, Goodfellas, Age of Innocence (not nominated) and The Last Tempation of Christ (not nominated)).
I’m afraid the wave for The Artist will sweep that away this time, though.
Steve50:
Don’t forget about the late Verna Fields. I “Jaws” is perhaps one of the best edited films ever made. Fields’ work made that movie something special(along with John WIlliams’ score) and AMPAS gets it right sometimes. They rewarded her with a well-deserved Oscar that year.
This year? I’m still ticked that the editors branch of AMPAS ignored Matt Newman’s work on “Drive”.
@kiefer
Yeah, I had her included initially, but her filmography wasn’t as long as the other two (although she did American Grafitti and Medium Cool – a great film). She moved up the ranks at the studios, breaking glass ceilings along the way.
Jaws WAS the editing. She’s quoted, “On Jaws, each time I wanted to cut I didn’t, so that it would have an anticipatory feeling — and it worked.” Sure did.
If there is anywhere that women have had an impact in filmmaking, it’s in the evolution of film editing.
Go Thelma and Marty! Those side-by-side photos of the dynamic duo are priceless. They’re still the coolest.
LOVE THAT PICTURE!!!
My prediction:
Best Comedy/Musical – “The Artist.”
Best Drama – Hugo
C/M is a slam-dunk, but Drama could go to either Hugo or TGWTDT.
Dear Awardsdaily/Sasha Stone, I know this is off topic, but when you talk about best screenplays, please consider this information in mind:
2010-2006 – Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay went to the same film.
2005 – Best Director and Best Screenplay went to the same film.
2004 – M$B didn’t win Best screenplay
2003 – LOTR won BP, BD, and BS.
2002 – The Pianist won best director and best screenplay
2001 – ABM won Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay.
2000 – Traffic won best director and best screenplay.
In 7/11 years, we have seen the Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay winner go to the same film. In 10/11 years, we have seen the Best Director and Best Screenplay winner go to the same film. If this trend continues, “The Artist” is the favorite to win the Best Original Screenplay, not “Midnight in Paris.”
IF the great Thelma Schoonmaker, the only editor to have the profile that editors DESERVE for all the hard work they do on a film, if she wins she will then have FOUR Oscars, the most that any one has ever won! The most under-appreciated, under-known field in filmmaking = editors!
Also, vis a vis Thelma, who is the widow of the late Michael Powell, I felt that it needs mentioning that I felt the subtext of neglected sadness that permeates Melies’ fate in “Hugo” is really channeling what Marty and of course Thelma felt about the fate of the great Michael Powell.
Sasha, that is a great photo of Schoonmaker and Scorsese editing Woodstock in 1969. The current photo is great, too, and it seems they are still on the same wavelength. Thanks for these kinds of touches that make your site so great.
I work as an editor and am a member of BAFTA but not ACE or Oscar, I personally think as everyone is predicting The Artist will win the Musical/Comedy prize, as for Drama my natural instinct would be to vote for Girl With A Dragon Tattoo, although I don’t think any editor would be upset seeing Thelma win. What I do disagree with is that The Artist will win the Oscar, personally I think its more likely to be the drama winner, talking to a lot of colleagues (and I except everyone votes in the Oscars not just the editors) many of us wouldn’t have put The Artist in the top three best edited films this year.
