Congratulations to Rango
thanks, fire emblem!
we’ll give you a nod on the main page.
There is Tintin and then there is Rio. Then there is everything else.
Ugh am I the only one who thought Rango was average?? Studio Ghibli’s Arrietty was the only animated movie that I really enjoyed last year, however Chico & Rita (which came out in 2010 here in the UK) was the worthy winner from these nominees!
2007: RATATOUILLE
2008: WALL-E
2009: UP
2010: TOY STORY 3
2011: RANGO??
When Pixar is not having a good year, the animation field is NOT having a good year
Oldman was robbed.
Wow, there’s a lot of awards…
Wow, didn’t know there were TWO spanish films nominated for Best Picture: Arrugas (a film about Alzheimer) and Chico & Rita (a music film by Oscar winner Fernando Trueba – 1993, Foreign Film, Belle Epoque and Javier Mariscal, world famous designer). One of them has been nom’d for the Oscar, but from what I have seen and heard about Arrugas, it would very well have been nom’d for Oscar, too.
Rango is good enough, truly award good

Whoo!! Alright John Williams
)
Rango was a average film. I’d like to see Chico and Rita.
I have Rango on DVD. It’s kind of like the animal animated version of the good, the bad and the ugly and pale rider.
Character Animation in Live Action Production
Rise of the Planet of the Apes! Sweet
Rango deserved the win for Best Feature and it won the Audience Favorite film, too.
2011 was the weakest year for animation since the Animated Feature film category was created. Even weaker than 2002 with Spirit, Treasure Planet, Lilo & Stitch, Ice Age and Spirited Away (which I always though overrated) or 2006 with Cars, Happy Feet and Monsters House. In the end the Academy made one of the few categories that takes on account the reviews of the films. I liked Tintin but if they were going for the critics, they just had to replace kung fu panda for arthur christmas, whose chances were hurt by its thematic that doesn`t get people interested in it when it`s not Christmas time. And I have to agree with the comment about Pixar. If it doesn`t have a brilliant film in theaters, it`s obviously not a good year for animation.
Yay Rango! Score Jennifer Yuh!
Bill Nighy over James Hong? SMH.
Good for “RANGO”. It’s gonna win the Oscar now.
“RANGO” and “ARTHUR CHRISTMAS” were my favorite animated films of the year, the first for being such an homage to westerns in general and the second for just being ridiculously entertaining as hell.
“CARS 2″ is actually a good film from a certain point of view. I think guys like Ebert, Travers, and Turan were wise to see the film as an entertaining one at heart and not fitting into some “Pixar standard” that most of us put on it. It was good and should have gotten an Oscar nomination with the two above, “WINNIE THE POOH”, and “KUNG FU PANDA 2″.
Take THAT, Chico and effing Rita.
@JP it was also a bad year for major movie, but sequels did very well and it kinda surprising that the highest grossing film of the year wasn’t nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars.
@ SClub88Official
I don`t really agree. If you look at 2011`s top 5 films in American box office, only Harry Potter saves… the rest is Transformers (35) , Pirates (34), Twilight (25) and Hangover (35) (RT scores). And from those films, only Potter made more money than its antecessors in the U.S. Transformers did quite well but the others all could have done more. Worldwide they did fine although Pirates and Twilight didn`t top the franchise ranking. But they could have done more if the quality was better.
The only sequels I would probably save from this year in terms of quality are Potter, Mission Impossible, X-Men, Planet of the Apes and maybe Fast Five, Sherlock Holmes. I`m not really a big fan of Kung Fu Panda but they did a fine sequel and Puss In Boots was really surprising but Cars 2, Happy Feet 2…
Looking at 2010 we have Toy Story, Potter, Inception, Despicable Me, Tangled, How to Train Your Dragon and the good but not great Iron Man 2… and True Grit at 13th with amazing 170 million dollars. A much better year with no doubt… 2009 we had Potter, Avatar, Up, the first Hangover, Star Trek…. 2008 with WALL-E, The Dark Knight, Iron Man and Indiana Jones… Things didn`t go so well for the studios in 2011. I think it`s time they cared a little bit more for the scripts. Sometimes I think they haven`t noticed that when the script is good they make even more money… specially the animated films… you just have to look at 2010 to see that. 1/2 of the top 10 were animation and despite the underapreciated Shrek 4 with medium reviews, the rest got good to outstanding ones.
