Art Directors Guild Award Winners Predictions
The ADG will announce their winners tonight at their 16th. The event will begin around 5pm. The nominees, and our predictions, as follows:
Period Film
- THE ARTIST Production Designer: Laurence Bennett
- HUGO, Production Designer: Dante Ferretti
- THE HELP, Production Designer: Mark Ricker
- ANONYMOUS, Production Designer: Sebastian Krawinkel
- TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY, Production Designer: Maria Djurkovic
Prediction: Hugo
Spoiler: The Artist
Wouldn’t be Surprised: Tinker Tailor
Contemporary Film
- THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO Production Designer: Donald Graham Burt
- THE DESCENDANTS, Production Designer: Jane Anne Stewart
- EXTREMELY LOUD & INCREDIBLY CLOSE, Production Designer: K.K. Barrett
- DRIVE, Production Designer: Beth Mickle
- BRIDESMAIDS, Production Designer: Jefferson Sage
I have no idea how this will go. I’m inclined to say it’s between Dragon Tattoo and Descendants, but Bridesmaids is so popular that it’s hard to imagine that the likability factor alone won’t push it through. Since the Oscar race is always down to the period design, or else the sci-fi design, this category doesn’t have to mirror Oscar. But if it did, it would go for the two Best Pic nominees, Descendants and Loud and Close.
Prediction: Dragon Tattoo
Spoiler: Descendants
Won’t be surprised: Bridesmaids
Fantasy Film
- HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 2, Production Designer: Stuart Craig
- CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER, Production Designer: Rick Heinrichs
- THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN: THE SECRET UNICORN, Production Designer: TBD
- PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES, Production Designer: John Myhre
- COWBOYS & ALIENS, Production Designer: Scott Chambliss
Prediction: Harry Potter
Spoiler: TinTin
Wouldn’t be surprised: Anonymous

Prediction: The Oscars

I think Hugo has this one in the bag, unless The Artist is destined to hit every guild / most of the guilds Slumdog-style. I’d love Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy to upset, but without an Oscar nomination in this category, I think it’s unlikely. Curse of the Golden Flower managed that a few years back, though, so it’s not an impossibility.
Predictions: Hugo, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Harry Potter
ANONYMOUS is nominated in period category, not fantasy
In the Contemporary category, Drive is the only film with a distinctive “look.” It may pull an upset victory.
^ You don’t think Dragon Tattoo has a distinctive look???
Tinker Tailor will win without any doubt. How Maria Djurkovic isn’t nominated for an Oscar is quite a travesty.
Personally, I would love to see Stuart Craig win here and go on to win the Oscar. I think regardless of what you think about the Potter films, his work has been consistently excellent on each of the films. It would be great to see him get some recognition for a decades worth of stellar work.
I think Hugo deserves this and the art direction Oscar more than any other Award it has been nominated for. I sure hope it wins. It will be groan-inducing if the artist snatches this one.
Hugo has to win this. The AD is simply amazing. I mean, just this one frame that Sasha has chosen is enough alone to deserve, and imagine there a are over 150,000 more frames just as beautiful and lush throughout the entire film.
My predix: Hugo, The Descendants, Harry Potter.
The same things you guys are saying about Ferretti’s work on Hugo (which I wholeheartedly agree with) were equally valid w/r/t his art direction on Gangs of New York, and he was passed over at the Oscars for the nowhere near as impressive work on Chicago.
So don’t think this is a done deal.
Yeah, but GoNY suffered from major backlash going into the awards, whereas Hugo has not.
Ferretti has never won here. Not for Gangs of New York (his best work to date). Not even for The Aviator and Sweeney Todd, for which he won Academy Awards. A surprise by TTSS wouldn’t be a bad thing, for its art direction is gorgeous and sleek. Harry Potter will likely win its category, maybe even pushing it forward for the series’ sole win at the Oscars.
Interestingly enough, Hugo cinematography Robert Richardson, who also has 2 Oscars to his name (JFK, The Aviator) has never won with his guild, this despite 9 previous nominations.
I haven’t seen Hugo yet, but it looks more like a fantasy than period for its sets.
In an ideal world, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy would win this and the Oscars, but since it’s art direction isn’t SHINY AND OH, SO BEAUTIFUL it wasn’t even nominated.
Hey Sasha and Ryan
Totally off topic, but these are hilarious (and some quite close to the bone):

I would expect Hugo to take this and the Oscar. For me, this is the only major category where it is truly deserving.
I’d be equally happy to see The Artist win though and would be absolutely delighted if Tinker Tailor was recognised but that’s highly unlikely.
Drive would certainly be my preference for contemporary.
Period Film: The Artist
Contemporary Film: The Girl with the dragon tattoo
Fantasy Film: HP
What I noticed about the art direction in The Descendants is that everything has a worn, damp feel, comfy and lived in, but not traditionally ‘Hawaiian’. In fact, they went far afield to keep stereotypes of the locale far in the background.
Although not considered in this award, I thought the costumes were excellent for a contemporary films. There were characters who had not a single line that you had very distinct feelings about, based solely on what they wore.
Oh, but to add, although I admired that movie greatly, c’mon, Alec is right — this award has to go to Drive.
NGNG – TTSS & Drive
HP should be a foregone conclusion
I love the way you make three predictions in every category. You do this all the time. You are pretty much guaranteed to be right on some level. Even if your predicted winner loses, you can claim your spoiler prediction won, or your “wouldn’t be surprised” won.
Anyone can pick the top three contenders in a category. Make ONE prediction in each category and stick to it.
I just saw Hugo (in 3D) for the second time and was even more blown away than the first time. History will record what a travesty it is that The Artist wins over Hugo. It will stand alongside such slights as Brokeback losing to Crash, Taxi Driver losing to Rocky, and Reds losing to Chariots of Fire. History is a harsh mistress!
Predix:
Hugo
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Harry Potter
** The train station interiors alone can win it for Hugo. Those Melies film set recreations make it unbeatable.
** My problem with TGWTDT is that even the Art Direction resembles the Swedish version, I think only the score and the English language distinguish the 2 films. When I saw the film, I was totally blown away by Rooney Mara, but now I’m thinking it’s another aspect of the film that is so like the original.
** Deathly Hallows Part 1 lost out to Inception, Part 2 should easily and deservedly clinch the award this time around.
Regardless of what wins the ADG, I expect Hugo to win the Oscar for art direction and probably several more awards. The film has the most impressive production values of the year.
I am getting tired of all the bashing The Artist is getting on this site. Both films tackle the silent film era. The difference, for me? The Artist does it in a much more concise way. Yes, I loved the valentine to Georges Milies that is Hugo. But it takes so long to get there. The Artist triumphs from beginning to end – for me.
And … as far as all this talk about which film people will be talking about in the future. I’d like to see all your crystal balls. We don’t know this. We only know what we like now. Maybe neither film will be as embraced as they are right now.
The Artist – gimmicky? Yes, beautifully so.
Quite honestly, I’m tired of people talking like the Melies stuff is what makes Hugo. The film is a joy to behold from beginning to end, filled with wonderful characters and wondrous imagination.

Any news from this yet???
yeah, they they’ve only given two and those are for TV: Boardwalk Empire and SNL each won
ugh, Game of Thrones robbed of another award.
Modern Family just won.
Oscars, not surprisingly, win the Awards, Music, or Game Shows category.

I agree. For example, I really doubt that in 1982 many people would have guessed that Blade Runner would turn out to be the movie most admired and discussed thirty years later in 2012.
