ASC Awards Preview and Predictions

Tomorrow night the ASC hands out its prize for Best Cinematography. As you can see, it’s kind of hit and miss with Oscar, though something tells me this is going to be one of the key awards. I figure, if The Artist wins here, we might be looking at maybe some kind of sweep of the techs. The same might be said for Hugo – it will show whether or not it has support. But I think I have to go with Tree of Life, considering the way the awards are usually given out. They are all worthy nominees and worthy winners.
Guillaume Schiffman, AFC (The Artist)
Jeff Cronenweth, ASC (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo)
Robert Richardson, ASC (Hugo)
Hoyte van Hoytema, FSF, NSC (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy)
Emmanuel Lubezki, ASC, AMC (The Tree of Life)
Sasha and Ryan’s prediction: Tree of Life
Kris Tapley is predicting The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo — which would blow my mind.
The chart after the jump.

I would be so thrilled if Dragon Tattoo got this; I think the cinematography was so subtle and interesting…but beating Tree of Life would be almost impossible.
Yes, Tree of Life was pretty amazing stuff – probably the best thing about the film – that, and displaying how much of a star Jessica Chastain will become. For the win.

Figuring nothing can beat Tree of Life but if anything does that would be pretty wild.
This seems like a no-brainer; Tree of Life FTW. All others bow.
The Karate Kid II was one of the 5 best-photgraphed films of 1986? The things you learn here…
In this category, there’s “Tree of Life,” and then there’s the rest. None even come close, though I greatly admired the work on “Tinker Tailor.” But as for “Dragon Tattoo,” “Hugo,” and “The Artist,” I’d swap those out for “Drive,” “Melancholia,” and “Rampart” in a heartbeat. Even Wally Pfister’s subtle work on “Moneyball” would be a worthy replacement. Just a mediocre slate of nominees this year. Lubezski better win
Dragon Tattoo and Tinker Tailor and brilliant nominations but Tree of Life really deserves this. It should be a no-brainer.
Yeah, this is a “c’mon-really” if there ever was one. Any other than Tree of Life would indicate either idiocy or malice.
“The Karate Kid II was one of the 5 best-photgraphed films of 1986? ”
Set in Okinawa, shot in Hawaii, the vistas were pretty, the houses and gardens were colorful, the nomination is not at all surprising.
The Tree of Life wins the ASC but looks like War Horse will nab the Oscar.
The Tree of Life is easily the best here. Though if Drive was in contention, I wouldn’t be sure. Melancholia should be here too.
Frankly, The Artist was only nominated because (besides the fact the film will win Best Picture) is that anything shot in B&W is a nominee by default…and also a loser by default, even if it is easily the best work out of the nominees, like The White Ribbon and The Man Who Wasn’t There.
Just saw “Hugo” this afternoon and I´m definitely going to predict Robert Richardson for the win. I dunno about this ASC group because I know too little about their history, but I´m damn sure “Hugo” will win Best Cinematography over “Tree of Life” at the Oscars!
First of all, the cinematography is nothing but spectacular, “Hugo” is very bewitching to look at, and I still believe many voters are turned off by the esoteric stuff in “Tree of Life” – I wonder how many are going to sit through this til the end? Don´t get me wrong, the work of Lubezki and the actors were the only parts I really liked about that film, but if I could vote, I´m with Richardson.
That said and as much as I liked “Hugo”, for me it does not rank among his best work (that “master class” would be “Raging Bull”, “Taxi Driver” and “Good Fellas”). “Hugo” has a lot of scenes that are mindblowing for sure, but I was not really satisfied with the story turning it´s direction in the end. I wished it would stay with the boy and reflect more on his relationship to his father. That was the part I was touched by. I didn´t like the Melies part as much as the rest. For me, the story went in too many directions, but I clearly see what motivated Scorsese, who is also well known for his merit in restoring old classic films.
Still, I´d rank “Hugo” as my 2nd favourite of the nine nominated candidates (haven´t checked “Extremely Loud” and “War Horse” yet). Now that I´ve seen a good number of 2011 production one thing sucks even more than a couple of weeks ago: “Dragon Tattoo” not being included in the Best Pic-category! I like it better than any other of the contenders, except “The Artist”.
Richardson didn’t do the cinematography for any of those films. “Raging Bull” and “Taxi Driver” was Michael Chapmen and “Goodfellas” was Michael Ballhaus. You want to look at Richardson’s best work w/ Scorsese, I’d vote for Shutter Island and The Aviator. His best work, however, is probably on Oliver Stone’s “JFK”
Oh, sorry, I see what you mean. Should’ve paid attention to the paragraph break lol
Could you imagine if Janusz Kaminski took the Oscar again from one of Malick’s films? I still think John Toll deserved his third Oscar for his work on The Thin Red Line over what Kaminski did for Saving Private Ryan (although it’s still worthy of merit). I really hope Lubezki wins for this category at both the ASC and Oscars.
I have a strange feeling Tree of Life doesn`t win the Oscars. There were so many upsets in this category over the last years: Lord of The Rings, Master & Commander, Inception, Pan`s Labyrinth.
I think Hugo takes this one. Tree of Life takes the guild but Hugo takes the Oscar. The techs at the Oscar look like this: Hugo takes Cinematography, Costumes, Art Direction, Sound Mixing and S. Editing. he Artist takes editing. Planet of the Apes take Visual Effects. Harry Potter or The Iron Lady take Makeup.
I just know the Oscars are gonna screw up here. I guess it’s not their fault – they just don’t know any better.
At least the ASC should be safe to call – Tree of Life.
As much as Dragon Tattoo is praised here, I think it was inferior to Cronenweths previous work on TSN.
Cinematography probably was the best thing about Tree of Life and I think it’s gonna win here, but my NGNG is going to be Hugo (my personal favorite of the year).
What if The Artist wins?
I’ve seen Tree of Life, Hugo and The Artist, and the cinematography of Hugo is my favorite.
The Artist will win. Simply by people being persuaded by emotions and not genius.
Then again, the art directors weren’t persuaded by a hack film, so maybe the cinematographers are just as smart?
The best thing about WH was the cinematography, but yes it should be Tree of Life. Having said that Hugo is a far superior film in my book, so Richardson would be a worthy winner.
I feel like John Wayne being carpet-bombed in black and white – at what time will this next round hit? (i.e. the ACS awards?)
ASC – Tree of Life
AMPAS – The Artist
I don’t think AMPAS will go for The Artist.
And… Tree of Life won!
