  2. Completely off-topic, but Scott Rudin completed the EGOT with a Grammy win for best Broadway Cast Album (producer, The Book of Mormon)!

  7. Ok now he just needs the Oscar *fingers seriously crossed*. Honestly, it’s the only award I care about at the Oscars, which actually feels good to say.

  9. Slap in the face of BAFTA’s ridiculous cinematophy award for The Artist. Good.

  11. Absolutely the right choice. But watch out for War Horse at the Oscars. The Artist winning cinematography at the BAFTA makes this category one of the most volatile ones, which is quite unbelievable, it should have been game set and match for The Tree of Life from day 1.

  12. Tree of Life wasn’t even screened for the BAFTA voters, so that’s why it wasn’t nominated for anything. Had it been screened, it would have clearly won for Cinematography. If there has ever been a blatant lock for an award at the Oscars, this has to be it. Anything else winning would be absurd to the point of hilarity.

  13. Also off topic

Not surprised that The Vow took in 40 million over the weekend. I had two tickets but the theatre over-sold. No seats. Saw CHRONICLE which was pretty damn good. And I loathe those kind of movies. It was HEATHERS meets fan-boy fantasy.

  14. Tree of Life wasn’t even screened for the BAFTA voters

Funny, it wasn’t screened for me either. How many of us needed to be invited to a screening before we figured out a way to see one of the year’s most important films on our own?

Isn’t it screwed up when somehow we can all manage to see Tree of Life and know how beautifully shot it is — but the BAFTA and the Academy have no idea how to buy or rent a movie?

  15. I will accept ANY win for Best Cinematography at the Oscars as long as it ISN’T The Artist, Tree of Life being one of them. The Artist winning Best Cinematography at the BAFTAs was pure awful. The Academy should know better and hopefully Oscar night will not be as disappointing as the BAFTAs.

  16. Cinematography is not all about beautiful imagery. It’s also about communicating emotions through camerawork.

I have seen Tree of Life and The Artist (not yet seen Hugo).

Tree of Life had beauty and magnificence of an unparalleled scale. Unique camera angles that stretch the imagination.

The Artist too was elegantly shot. But the high point was clearly its masterful table mirror glass of water trick which conveys Valentin’s state of mind.

This award is a matter of preference. I can’t say one is better than the other. But I don’t think this award is all sewn up. Remember how everyone thought he’d win for Children of Men? Yeah, I was one of the few that predicted Pan’s Labyrinth to win that year :-)

  17. Even though Lubezki has won a ton of awards this season, I still don’t think he is a lock. Children of Men won every single cinematography award then and ended up not getting the Oscar in the end. It was tragic.

The Oscar for Cinematography tends to go to films with showy production design. Usually, films nominated in Art Direction prosper in the Cinematography category. Since Tree of Life failed to garner an Art Direction nod, I feel that what happened to Children of Men could happen to Tree of Life. I do think, however, that Lubezki has a better chance this time around because his vehicle is a Best Picture nominee unlike last time.

  18. @Paul – he does have a better shot this time around, and it’s worth noting that last time Pan’s Labyrinth wasn’t even a nominee in most cases… so hence the surprise seemed bigger.

The same could, and ought to in my opinion happen with A Separation for Original Screenplay.

  19. The Tree of Life was absolutely the most deserving here – but to suggest that The Artist is also not brilliantly photographed is ridiculous. The camerawork was superlative throughout.

  20. I wasn’t a fan of Tree Of Life as an overall film, but there’s no denying that it was beautifully shot and well-deserving of an Oscar. Heck, Lubezki should have at least one Academy Award already (Children of Men was incredible) so let’s hope the voters finally reward him this time around.

Then, with Lubezki and Pfister properly rewarded, we can finally focus on Roger Deakins getting a dang Oscar!

  21. DAMN STRAIGHT! ASC had no other choice but to give Lubezki the award. His work on ToL is nothing short of groundbreaking. My fingers too are crossed tightly for Emmanuel to finally win the oscar. Don’t mess this up academy!

  22. Hugo could upset ToL, but I hope Lubezki finally wins. ToL got BP and BD, so there’s enough support for the film I think.

  29. If cinematography is mostly about how the camera moves with skill and captures action smoothly, then Children of Men deserved it. If cinematography is more about colour and light and angles and framing, then Pan’s was more deserving of its win. What should this award be judged on?

As to this year, I’d be happy with a Richardson win on the sheer quality of his Hugo work, less happy with a Kaminski win but it wouldn’t be that much of a surprise either; an Artist win here would be the clearest indication that the film is going to sweep, but its camera work seems to lack that special quality that one would think was needed to win here, and I can’t see it doing a Schindler’s List. I just hope that Lubezki can triumph like we all seem to want him to!

  30. Just want to say that Lubezki not winning for Children of Men should be considered, at least, as one of the top three snubs in the History of AMPAS.

  31. Paul and Manu are completely right, Children of Men was every bit the lock. As much as Tree of Life seems like an unbeatable thing thats only because people are forgetting that the Academy don’t pay much attention to the technical awards. As much as the cinematographers might be united on Tree of Life, the other 6,000 members are less focused on that single thing, and thats why so often technical awards just seem to be given away to films to pad out their wins sometimes. Best Score is one of the worst done by catogories here.
I’m not saying that Tree of Life isn’t going to win, just don’t get too confident about it.

    Also, woo Harrison Ford

  34. Children of Men was a perceived lock because it won all the cinematography awards leading up to the oscar. Pan’s Labyrinth was overlooked during those precursor awards, and hence the so called surprise win seemed like a shocker to some.

But I can hold on to that prediction as one of the finest I’ve ever made. Thank you me!

I’ll even tell you the scene that won it the award -
The girl is shot and is bleeding out. She has a crescent moon tattoo on her arm which is part of her magical heritage or something. Her blood is dripping into the labyrinth, into a puddle of water that has concentric undulations. In this puddle of water, there is a reflection of the full moon. However, due to the concentric undulations and the movements of the camera, it looks like a crescent moon… a reference to the little girl finally entering the portal or whatever it was.
