Awards Daily Final Simulated Oscar Ballot

Rob has put together the final stage of this year’s Simulated Oscar Ballot, and provides this reminder:

We want to know what you think is best. We are not asking what you think will win. That is handled over at our PREDICT THE OSCARS contest. We want you to say what you think is best.

So this is your chance to get into the head of an Academy voter.
Do your best!!!!

This year, to give us a general profile of participants, we’ve added a set of questions asking for the following anonymous info: Gender, Age, Location, Are you or someone you are acquainted with an Academy member? and How Many of the Best Picture Nominees have you seen?

We haven’t set a deadline yet. We’ll keep up as long as possible — but try to vote soon because we need to allow Rob time to tabulate.

  1. voted.

Thank you Rob for all your hard work on getting this simulated oscar ballot for us to make as feel as close as we can to an oscar voter. It’s funny, when you vote from the heart, your perspective on the nominees really does to change from what you think will win. I hope the voters feel the same way in the end.

  2. Thanks for doing this, again – it’s quite satisfying to take one last shot for the home faves. I found that I stayed away from all but two category frontrunners when I voted with my brain.

  3. It is insane how much I cannot stand this year’s Best Director lineup. This might be the first time that not a SINGLE nominee overlaps with what would be my ballot.

    My slate would look like:

    Nicholas Winding Refn – “Drive”
David Fincher – “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”
    J.C. Chandor – “Margin Call”
    Bennett Miller – “Moneyball”
    Steve McQueen – “Shame”

And my runner-up would be Asghar Farhadi, so not even my top six.

    This year’s Oscars blow.

  4. Whatever happened to this ballot?: http://www.awardsdaily.com/2012/01/simulated-oscar-ballot-ad-reader-nominees/#more-48671

Will we get to vote for our winners in it too?

  5. Paddy M,

Our thinking is that the AD nominees were already announced in ranked order, 1st place and runners-up — so we wouldn’t have expected much different outcome if we went through the motions of making it official with a final vote for our Wish-List nominees

It might have been interesting to see how the preferential rounds of tabulation shook out for Best Picture, but we’ll get the same sort of insight into the internal numbers with the actual nominees too.

It’s clear that many of us would have been happier if Oscar’s taste matched our readership — but we already proved that point, right? The simulated ballot showed how daring and cool things might have been.

You guys did great. Fine job schooling the Academy.

Second stage of schooling — take the sow’s ear they’ve given us and show them how a silk purse can still be salvaged.

  6. Voted for War Horse in 4 (almost 5, but had to go Lubezki in Cinematography) categories, and it’s only my #8 for Picture. I wish the Academy voted this way as well – less sweeps, more voting for what trhey actually think was the best in a category.

  7. Kk. Although in previous years, the leaders after the nominations round didn’t always win outright after the winners round. But I’m satisfied with this, don’t worry! :)

  8. I went with heavy doses of Hugo and was constantly lamenting the lack of nominations for Drive.

  9. Not that the Academy cares in real life, but I feel bad voting in the below-the-line categories where I’ve only seen three or four of the nominees. What to do about Doc Short, where the theater release only had four of the five nominees…? I have a clear favorite, but I feel bad since I haven’t seen God is the Bigger Elvis.

And Foreign? That’s an even bigger mess. How many AD voters will have seen more than A Separation? I’m betting not many. It will be hard to take the results seriously there.

  10. I really kinda hated doing that. Ranking movies I don’t even like. Bleh. After third place it was like a Sophie’s Choice of which unwanted kid to give away first. lol

I didn’t vote for any of the shorts, etc. I know nothing about them. But I did vote for A Separation in FF even though it’s the only one I’ve seen.

    ha! me too.
how many people selected your top 3 — and then skipped down to #9 and dug your way up from the bottom?

I did. Felt satisfying to murder the worst titles as quickly as possible

  12. I’m watching Extremely Loud tomorrow, the only BP nominee I have yet to see, then I’ll key in my votes. So far, War Horse is dead last among the 8 I’ve seen, not that it’s mawkish, but rather due to its paper thin storyline.

  13. Wow. This time last year, I had seen The Town, Animal Kingdom, Black Swan, The King’s Speech, The Social Network, True Grit, Winter’s Bone, The Fighter, How To Train Your Dragon, 127 Hours, and The Kids Are Alright only missing Blue Valentine, Rabbit Hole, The Illusionist, and Bitiful – I think. I just was at the end of my sad rope after all those flicks in a short span of time.

This year, I’ve seen Kung-Fu Panda 2, Harry Potter, and The Help, and I feel like I only missed out on Dragon Tatoo, Rango, Puss, and Hugo. Just doesn’t inspire me much.

Also I’m 25… so there’s no actual choice there for me age-wise…

  14. To clarify on my last comment, the options are under 25 and 26-something. I picked under 25 :-/

    Don’t judge.

  15. Chance,

It’s been fixed. It now says, “25 and Under”
