Box Office Final

After the Oscars, The Artist will definitely make more money so not to worry – it probably will break some kind of record – like highest grossing silent film of all time, I’m guessing. But how did it finally shake down on the night before the Oscars? Domestic gross only.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – $381,000,000
The Help – $169,000,000
Bridesmaids – $169,000,000
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo – $101,000,000
War Horse $78,000,000
The Descendants $76,000,000
Moneyball $75,000,000

We Bought a Zoo – $73,000,000
Hugo – $67,000,000
Midnight in Paris $56,000,000
The Ides of March $40,000,000
J. Edgar $37,000,000
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close $30,000,000
The Artist $29,000,000 (in about half the theaters as the others)
Tree of Life $13,000,000

  1. Don’t forget THE IRON LADY

almost 25 million and 60 million worldwide – Pretty amazing for that type of film I think. A big profit too – only cost 13 million

  3. The only financial travesty seems to be Hugo, and the only FLOP of any notable proportion seems to be Extremely Loud. The Help and Midnight In Paris were clearly the two phenomenons of 2011, and The Descendants wonderfully over-performed for that kind of picture.

In the end, not the insular collection of film curios that people were fretting, but only one real box office smash stands out. And even that gross for The Help doesn’t reflect its success on DVD.

  4. The Artist is the phenomenon of the year too! If you think about, black and white, without dialogue. A box-office of 60,000, 000$ of a cost of 15,000, 000$, French and American actors!. It is time the American think about a lot of films of other countries make money too and are good. How many prizes, France, Spain, UKA, USA, Cannes. Productors, SAG, Golden Globe, Independant film Spirit Award, BAFTA, DGA, Best Actor at Cannes, Goya Foreign Film, A third choice for the best actor for National Film Critics, after Brad Pitt, Gary Oldman,.. And so much xenophobia by this website.

  5. Does the Oscars or Critic Societies always snub films that did very well in the box office and got positive reviews?

  6. @Sasha Stone you think the Artist would’ve done better if it was in color and if it wasn’t silent?

  8. SClub88Official — just my theory, but I think if The Artist had been in color with sound then it would never have been made in the first place.

And if it had been — there’s no comparably flimsy story in the past 10 years that has made any significant money.

With such a hackneyed cliche plot, the only way Peppy and Valentin could survive financially would be to take a rocketship to Pandora, in 3D.

But 3D and FX distractions are expensive. So they found a cheaper option.

They didn’t snub HP8, they just didn’t think it was good enough, and I agree with them. Avatar, Saving Private Ryan, Inception, all made money and got good reviews, Oscar voters didn’t snub them, they nominated, except Harry Potter, a children’s movie that tries to be like Lord of the Rings. Sorry.

  13. To say that The Artist achieved that box office result in half the theaters of the others is simply not accurate. First of all, it was in more theaters a few weeks ago and had to retrench because it failed at the higher theater count, it’s not as if the movie is still being rolled out. Secondly, both Midnight in Paris and The Tree of Life played in roughly the same number of theaters at the height of their runs.
