Cannes 2012 Spec Time
From Hollywood Elsewhere. Exciting news to look forward to. This year’s presumed Best Picture winner launched from Cannes, so did The Tree of Life and Midnight in Paris.
filing from Berlin, Cineuropa.org’s Fabien Lemercier has posted a speculation piece about Cannes 2012. Possible American entries, he says, include Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master, Andrew Dominik’s Cogan’s Trade with Brad Pitt, Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom, Woody Allen’s Nero Fiddled, Terrence Malick’s Voyage of Time (the IMAX-y flow-of-time documentary component to Tree of Life) and possibly James Gray’s Low Life.
Other likely-maybe’s include Michael Haneke’s Love, Ken Loach’s Angels Shares, Walter Salles’ On the Road, David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis, Carlos Reygadas’s Post Tenebras Lux, Abbas Kiarostami’s The End, Pablo Trapero’s Elefante blanco, Wong Kar Wai’s The Grandmaster, Matteo Garrone’s Big House and Jacques Audiard’s Rust and Bone.
Possibly more serious contenders are Olivier Assayas’s Something in the Air, Sergei Loznitsa’s In The Fog, Michel Gondry’s The We and the I, Ulrich Seidl’s Paradise trilogy, Hong Sang-soo’s Another Country, Im Sang-soo’s The Taste of Money and Xavier Dolan’s Laurence Anyways.

Wow, Cogan’s Trade, The Master, Nero Fiddled, and Moonrise Kingdom are all on my most-anticipated list. Plus, any movie called Lowlife immediately sparks my interest. You better be covering this, Sasha!
Um, P.T. Anderson, Terrence Malick, Abbas Kiarostami, Wong Kar Wai, Jacques Audiard AND Xavier Dolan? Can’t wait for all of these, even if many are sure to be hard to track down.
Sounds like another fantastic selection for Cannes is being prepped. I hope half of those come to fruition.
Cronenberg <3
Is Dolan’s film even finished? He went through several casting changes, which delayed filming, so I’m not even sure if it would be ready in time for Cannes.
Nero Fiddled will debut in Venice.
It would be great if ‘The Master’ got a Cannes world premiere, I think it will be either a strong bp-contender OR the frontrunner NCFOM-style, so it would be fantastic to hear official early word so soon.
Look at that list! New Malick, PT Anderson and Olivier Assayas make me suggest we wipe the table clear of this year’s leftovers and move on.
Great to hear about Voyage of Time (really looking forward to that one), but are there any chances Malick’s movie with Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams, Rachel Weisz…, some are calling it The Burial, any chances that will screen at Cannes?
Also, any chances we might be seeing Wettest County? The reason I’m asking is that Weinstein picked it up for the current Oscar race last year but dropped it in favor of The Artist, The Iron Lady and My Week With Marilyn. And after a schedule change from April to August (most likely to tie in Hardy and Oldman after Dark Knight Rises), I wouldn’t be surprised if they screened it at Cannes.
So excited to see Nero Fiddled!
I’m not sure that The Master will even be close to finished. They were saying the same when There Will Be Blood was in post-production but it sounds like that took almost a whole year to edit. It would be great to see The Master up for the Palme D’Or, though I’m not going to get my hopes up.
I hope the Master will be finished by Cannes (not hopeful though)
But so many great directors: Wong kar-Wai, Haneke, Cronenberg, Salles, Loach…
the only name I don’t like is Dolan…sorry, but his works pale in comparison to these masters. His second movie is even more pretentious than his first (which has a great performance).
To add another one to the speculation list: Derek Cianfrance’s ‘The Place Beyond the Pines’ I remember the producers were with Gosling last Cannes where they gained Sidney Kimmel as a producer and were aiming to premiere it at this years festival.
Apparently ‘On the Road’ plans to premiere there as well.
Cronenberg. That’s all I’m going to say.
Can’t wait for salles! It’s been a long ass time…
curious how cronenberg translate cosmopolis into the movie
