Clooney Here, There and Everywhere

George Clooney invites Charlie Rose and Lara Logan into his home but all I’m thinking is, they were naked in a hot tub together.

Meanwhile, last night I attended Clooney and Alexander Payne in a q&a with David Carr for the New York Times’ TimesTalks series. But you really have to watch the TimesTalks video to see how on-the-fly funny he is, especially in front of a crowd:

  1. Never seen someone campaigning that hard. Mediocre performance + endlessly charming = Best Actor Oscar.

  2. A well-written piece advocating Bechir’s performance, with an interesting and insightful comparison of undocumented workers in the U.S. to the maids in The Help.

  4. If an actress did this, hell would have broken loose. Men get a friggin pass every damn time.

  6. Let me preface this by saying I consider myself a fan of Alexander Payne’s work. Election was one of my favorites of the year, I enjoyed the divisive About Schmidt more than most people, and I also admired Sideways.

Sasha has been beating this drum that Payne is some kind of overdue American master when he’s (a) only made five films, and (b) already has an Oscar for his writing, as well as two directing nominations. I think it’s a little early to use that kind of “overdue” language, especially when we also have someone like Paul Thomas Anderson, who has also only made 5 films, but to mind is a much more exciting and talented artist, if not as a writer than certainly as a director.

In my mind, The Descendants is a bit of a step back for him, in that the pain and subsequent catharsis seem a bit manufactured. It’s not nearly as funny as his last three films, either. And as much as I love Clooney, I don’t find his work here approaches what Nicholson and Giamatti accomplished in their respective Payne films.

Something that really bugged me in this interview is when Payne said he doesn’t watch much modern American film, and I think that’s a real shame. For one, it makes him sound like a smug prick, but also one has to wonder, if there isn’t anything worth watching in current American cinema, then why the fuck should we watch HIS film? Secondly, even if this does reflect his viewing habits, why share that with an audience? Why reinforce the notion that films aren’t as good as they used to be? It sets a really bad example.

I go back to that list published last year of Steven Soderbergh’s “playlist”, and you see a guy with an appetite for films both classic and modern. He was watching films that appeared to influence his own current project, but was also clearly dissecting current masterpieces like The Social Network (which he supposedly saw at least three times). That’s the director I admire, one who has one eye on the past and another in the future. And he’s a lot more vital of a film artist than Alexander Payne. Perhaps if the latter would take in more current films, his own productions would have a little more life in them.

  7. Both he and Brad Pitt are doing what the youth in the UK call “begging it”, or in other words, trying too hard. I agree if this was an actress the reaction wouldn’t be so accommodating. Folk jumped on Melissa Leo last year for that ad, and I sense some animosity towards Michelle Williams campaign. It will be so hilarious if Dujardin or Oldman pull off the win (granted they too are campaigning but it’s no where near as blatant).

  8. I don’t think war zone sexual-assault victim Lara Logan is hopping into the hot tub with Clooney and Rose. Haven’t a clue why that entered your mind.

I wasn’t talking about Logan. Don’t you remember the story of Clooney and Charlie Rose in Clooney’s hot tub? Guess it must have been just me. I guess I better provide a link lest people like you misinterpret my intentions. As if I would ever.

  11. Sasha,

Lara Logan has spent years reporting from war zones imbedded with hot 18-30 year old male soliders. Never has she done anything as inappropriate as getting naked with them. I highly doubt she did something similar with his highness George Clooney, whom some people erroneously believe is irresistible to all females.. Ms. Logan is a very respected reporter that survived sexual assault by a mob of men can we please show her some respect?

  13. Clooney just seems to be promoting his movie that is still in theatres, which is to be expected. What’s Pitt’s reason for being everywhere right now?

  14. Well Hollywood is supposedly the dream factory so maybe Clooney figures his Oscar dream will become a reality if he pushes hard enough.I have seen a number of Mr. Clooney’s movies and I wouldn’t call him a compelling actor, but a number of critics have said that in Descendants he does career best work.A true talent is Gary Oldman not Clooney and not Pitt.Neither of these guys have created iconic screen characters they sort of are there doing their scenes ,sometimes a bit better than usual but hardly memorable. If others have a fondness for their films well it must have been the story itself drawing them in and not acting excellence based on technique and understanding of the character. For that I recommend AMPAS members watch Streep’s Thatcher, now that is an excellent acting performance.

  16. Dane,

I watched it and got really annoyed at the way he kept making everything about him or his views. Especially when he interupted Tilda and Viola when they started talking about how women’s role in movies has changed and how central they used to be. Clooney promptly interrupts them and takes over the conversation. It was embarassing.

  17. Please stop comparing Clooney and Pitt – regarding their acting skills, Pitt is miles ahead, and yes, he has indeed created unique and memorable screen characters. But that’s not the point. Clooney is only omni-present (promoting his films), when he has a chance at winning an award for his work. Just look at how much he invested in “The American”.

  18. He has an overwhelming sense of his own importance. I agree with the poster who says that the press seems to want to annoint him as some sort of Don Juan, irrestible to all females.

He’s serviceable actor, entirely average–AND if he didn’t allow himself to go “gray” I think the press would stop kissing up to him.

  20. Always liked this guy, he seems very chilled out and just lucky to be a part of this glamour lifestyle. Not to mention all the work he does outside the film industry is very commendable. So all this backlash just sounds like envy to me. He’s a great guy.

  21. I am a Clooney fan. But his performance in The Descendants was only decent. It’s not in the same league as past winners of the best actor oscar. I would be upset if he wins it this year because it would be by virtue of campaigning only.

  22. i saw “ides of march” last night and i have to say its his better performance , i was not impressed with him in the descendants at all or that film in general it comes off as not very genuine, whereas he was very believable as poster boy politician, i felt like i was watching a campaign and wanted to vote for him lol
