I can’t believe these don’t broadcast these! You’d think Sundance or IFC would do this!
Oh and as I look…ICF apparently does air them tonight. Tape delayed for West Coast though it seems.
I am an Independent Spirit voter I voted for The Artist for BEST PICTURE, BEST DIRECTOR, BEST ACTOR AND BEST CINEMAT0GRAPHY. I voted for Tom McCarthy for BEST SCREENPLAY FOR WIN WIN BECAUSE I think it is a very underated film
The ISA are vert small potatoes compared tO The OSCARS . I did not receive any contact from Harvey or his company nor did I receive a screener for the Artist though I which i had. I did not need to be told how much I loved the Artist. SO please stop with the Harvey crap/
Is this gonna be the first year the same movie sweeps ISA and Oscar? *le sigh*
Platoon won Best Picture from ISA and Oscar. That’s the only time the two have agreed.
Except for Platoon, no winner of the Oscar for Best Picture has even been nominated for the Independent Spirit Award Best Picture (not even The Hurt Locker). Maybe that means Hugo is going to pull off the upset on Sunday night.
Has any film ever won the Cesar, The BAFTA, AND the Golden Globe before, Matt, not to mention AD? I think we’re dealing with something unstoppable.
I was really just being sarcastic. I fully expect The Artist to win tomorrow night. Not positive that it will win today, though. We’ll see soon enough.
Plummer wins for Beginners.
50/50 – first screenplay
cinematography – The Artist
Shaileen Woodley – supporting actress
Is there a live stream?
I’m following on Twitter
Patricia Clarkson is giving a toast
SallyinChi
no live stream that we know of
will be broadcast on IFC chan tonight at 9 p.m. central
Pariah wins John Cassavetes award
I had no idea this was not going to be live. When did they start doing it in the afternoon and then playing it at night? Didn’t Eddie Izzard host it in a cave last year? Or was that a different show?
I’m just confused about all the technology we have that makes us watch more and more things on tape.
my feed must’ve gone for a quickie
DuJardin just won….god you all, this is just nuts. Oh and he didn’t even bother to show up. He is clearly in town, dontcha think?
Jean Dujardin – male lead
Good for Dee Rees and Pariah.
He is clearly in town, dontcha think?
I heard* that Dujardin tweeted his acceptance speech:
*(heard in the movie playing in my head — which refuses to be silent)
If only this were Monty Python and not reality.
Descendants wins best screenplay
OK I’m back b/c I’m still fuming about the Best Actor. What the fucking fuck? EVERY other nominee was head and shoulders above Frenchie and deserved that above him. You can usually count on the Spirits to do the right thing most of the time, or at least the daring thing.
A Separation just gave an acceptance speech, but the boob didn’t say what for
A Separation wins foreign film. I guess we can thank Harvey that The Artist wasn’t nominated in its proper category, or it would taken foreign, LOL. Apparently all the Artist people were in Paris last night for the Cesars, so they couldn’t make it to the Spirits.
Anyway, yay Farhadi!
One of Rogen’s opening jokes was, “Didn’t we create that category so shit like this didn’t happen?” Referring to The Artist and Best Foreign Film.
genius
Seth Rogen, my hero.
#thingsIneverexpectedtosay
too slow for me (and not all that “independent”) – have to go feed the dogs.
Dujardin wins Best Actor from BAFTA, Independent Spirit, SAG, Cannes, Golden Globes, London Critics Circle, and probably the Oscars tomorrow night, but he loses in his home country. What’s up with that?
I’m about to lose my fucking mind. Hazanavicius just won the god damned Spirit.
I love how quirky the Indie Spirit Awards are.
Midnight in Paris gets tech nods but no love for Screenplay or Director. Woodley and Payne win for the Descendants, but Clooney gets not a nomination.
Artist wins best director. Hazanavicius arrives from the airport in the nick of time to accept. LOL, I think Harvey orchestrated all of this.
but he loses in his home country. What’s up with that?
know how everybody were all excited about Romney, Cain, Santorum… until people got to know them
perhaps a similar phenomenon at work in France
same way everybody at Awards Daily used to think I was such a nice guy
Santorum, Dujardin, Adams — all pretty cool till you live with us for awhile.
They tend NOT to nominate big stars like Clooney. That’s their claim to independence.
Dujardin and Hazanavicius both deserve to win and I hope both will win tomorrow.
Slap in Janet McTeer’s face!
Michelle Williams! Haven’t heard much from her lately – thought she may have retired.
As much as I sometimes disagree with you, Ryan, you and Dujardin are NEVER to be included in a group with Santorum.
Poor Elizabeth Olsen.
That said, I’m happy for Michelle. Didn’t much like the Marilyn film, but she’s been so great in Meek’s Cutoff, Blue Valentine, Wendy & Lucy…
the artist for cinematography
Anyone actually expected The Artist to not sweep here?
Growing up in Brazil, you learn from an young age to not trust in any group of voters…
Plummer for supporting. You forgot that.
quelle surprise
The Artist – best feature film
Remember when the Indie Spirits weren’t like “wondering” who would be Homecoming Queen?
Congrats, ISA, on making yourself completely irrelevant and as of tomorrow, retroactively redundant.
AndThe Descendants should have been nowhere near these awards. The ISA producers’ rationalizations from that interview about what “independent” means to them was a load of shit.
I’m confused as to what “independent” means based on nominations for these awards.
Yeah – it’s like the “spirit” part has been homogenized out. Drive, Take Shelter, yah-d- – this should have been their venue.
At least we had the chance to practice for tomorrow.
he didn’t even bother to show up. He is clearly in town, dontcha think?
They are/were in Paris.
BORING!!!!
“The Spirits, down in the count 0-2…The Artist looks in, gets the sign from Weinstein. Checks Take Shelter at first, he’s not going anywhere. The pitch…SWUNG ON AND MISSED! BIG whiff for the Spirits and The Artist has now held the competition scoreless for 8. One more inning and the ballgame is over.”
ISA for Best Actor is The Kiss of Death. Every actor who won ISA(except PSH) lost the Oscar. Clooney will win.
Last Night in Paris there was the Cesar Awards ceremony. I think Dujardin is coming to LA from there. Last night he lost the french Oscar, tomorrow… ; ) we’ll see…
Hopedully, at the Oscars, Hugo will perform “the kindest magic trick of all”.
this is bad. I ‘m not a movie guru but The Artist is very a bad movie.
voters are blind i believe this.(completely blind)
The Artist is this year’s Slumdog Millionaire. “bad movie with a lot of awards”.
thanks.
This cements my 6+ Oscar wins for The Artist feeling.
Michelle Williams! Haven’t heard much from her lately – thought she may have retired.
If only.
So when was it exactly that this year’s awards race went tits up? Was it the moment Karger predicted THE ARTIST? Or was it something else?
ISA for Best Actor is The Kiss of Death. Every actor who won ISA(except PSH) lost the Oscar. Clooney will win.
Eh… Clooney winning is worse.
So are we gonna hang out here when the actual show airs or have we all just given up now that we know the winners?
“same way everybody at Awards Daily used to think I was such a nice guy”
+1
LOL
T.
Ah les Cesars.. I remember when A Prophet cleaned up a few years. Still easily one of my Top 10 films this century, so far.
T.
this is a quote from our friend Nat at the film experience…..
Best Picture
Will Win: The Artist
Spoiler: The Descendants and The Help are the only films with spoiler heat but even if you try and talk yourself into them, you think you’re lying right?
Should Win: Haters gon’ hate but The Artist is a beautiful funny rare gift.
Best Director
Will Win: Michel Hazanavicius, The Artist
Spoiler: Martin Scorsese started precursor season strong with Hugo but the movie has been cooling so I have to wonder if it isn’t Alexander Payne in second position for The Descendants
Should Win: I’ll clap loudly for Hazanavicius but if they decide not to give the Artist everything, a surprise career win for Terrence Malick would be delicious
A sweeeeep is coming……
Speaking of the French Oscars. The only other BP-César-Nominee I saw was “Intouchables.” And that one was way better than “The Artist.” It evoked much more emotions and thoughts through a single scene than the silent film through its entirety.
Right now I see:
1. PICTURE
2. DIRECTOR
3. ACTOR
4. SCORE
5. EDITING
6. CINEMATOGRAPHY or COSTUME
Oh the spelling on this page is HORRIBLE! It’s The Descendants not Descendents! The spelling please! It’s drivin me nuts!
The Artist and Slumdog Millionaire aren’t “bad movies.” They’re just not fantastically great movies. They’re good, solid efforts, just not outstanding ones.
these are disappointing winners, though, in the main categories. I thought the Indies would be more daring with this, as they were with Dale Dickey last year.
oooph, sorry Archie.
I was copy/pasting these updates from someone on Twitter — but I should’ve caught that.
For some reason I had stopped paying attention and my mind was in robopost mode.
Who gives a frak about the ISA’s when the Razzie nominations were just announced.
And a landslide for Adam Sandler as he ALONE picked up 11 of them, or 20 percent of the total Razzie count BY HIS LONESOME

Thanks for looking around Ryan. I appreciate it. Haven’t had cable for years and just wanted to see if I could watch the Indie Spirits this year.
Ju Ju Boy,
just nothing at all so far — not even fake links.
I’m disappointed too. will keep looking
(best tips sometimes come from searching Twitter for key words “spirit live stream” )
Elizabeth Olsen > Michelle Williams
Seth Rogen was funny I thought. Especially what he said about THE ARTIST. Foreshadowing. lol
Sorry Eve, Elizabeth Olsen is nowhere near Michelle Williams, and far less. No way Elizabeth Olsen, who has turned in one performance of semi-note, could have done Blue Valentine, Meek’s Cutoff, Wendy and Lucy, Brokeback Mountain and a note-perfect Marilyn Monroe. Not in a million years, dear.
TAKE SHELTER won something at the Spirit Awards and isn’t listed. What was it?
thanks Logan — 3 awards weren’t televised, so I missed getting them.
Fixed.
