Perhaps the year’s most stunning international debut, Michael R. Roskam’s BULLHEAD is a harrowing tale of revenge, redemption and fate. Domineering cattle farmer Jacky Vanmarsenille (Mattias Schoenaerts in a ferocious breakout performance), constantly pumped on steroids and hormones, initiates a shady deal with a notorious mafioso meat trader. When an investigating federal agent is assassinated and a woman from his traumatic past resurfaces, Jacky must confront his demons and face the far-reaching consequences of his decisions. Acclaimed at festivals worldwide including the Berlin Film Festival, AFI Fest and Fantastic Fest, the award-winning BULLHEAD is visceral thriller bursting with rage that TwitchFilm calls “one of the most original crime films in recent memory.”

  5. Can’t wait to see this. Schoenaerts reminds me of Tom Hardy in this clip (@antoinette-alert!)

Found the opening voiceover of the film:
“No matter what you do or think, one thing is for sure, you’re always fucked. Now, tomorrow, next week or next year, until the end of time, fucked.”

  6. the actor was terrific in the movie hands down, though not convinced by the movie so much but it was good enough to be nominated but not enough to win.

  7. Speaking of Oscar nominees released after the announcement, Weinstein’s ‘Undefeated’ also comes out next Friday. I think it’s the one wild card documentary that stands a shot of defeating Paradise Lost 3 or Pina (the two front runners in my opinion). Perhaps in a similar position as Bullhead — a release platform favorable to keeping movies fresh in viewers minds.

  8. an unsettling story, a magnificent movie, exotically local while absolutely universal. There’s no doubt about why BULLHEAD got it’s well deserved nomination and it would be also well deserved to win for it cuts deep as a story revealing layer after layer of profound human suffering under an inscrutable surface in equally inscrutable landscapes and surroundings with an absolutely surprising, stunning and honest beauty. Watching this movie brings back memories of the great greek tragedies.
