Meryl Streep to Present at 84th Academy Awards

Look, it’s a Meryl Streep headline. As a Twitter wag tweeted last night: “I almost forgot the Oscars are coming up Monday night.”

Two-time Academy Award®-winning actress Meryl Streep will present at the 84th Academy Awards ceremony, telecast producers Brian Grazer and Don Mischer announced today.

Streep joins a stellar list of previously announced Oscar presenters, including Halle Berry, Rose Byrne, Bradley Cooper, Tom Cruise, Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Michael Douglas, Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Zach Galifianakis, Tom Hanks, Angelina Jolie, Milla Jovovich, Ellie Kemper, Jennifer Lopez, Melissa McCarthy, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Maya Rudolph, Emma Stone and Kristen Wiig.

Streep, who is nominated for her lead performance in “The Iron Lady,” has been nominated a total of 17 times – the most for any performer in Oscar history. She won a Supporting Actress Oscar in 1979 for her role in “Kramer vs. Kramer” and the Best Actress award in 1982 for her role in “Sophie’s Choice.” Her other film credits include “It’s Complicated,” “Julie & Julia,” “Doubt,” “The Devil Wears Prada,” “Adaptation,” “The Hours,” “Music of the Heart,” “The Bridges of Madison County,” “The River Wild,” “Ironweed” and “Silkwood.” Streep will be seen next in “Great Hope Springs.”

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2011 will be presented on Sunday, February 26, from the Hollywood & Highland Center® and televised live by the ABC Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries worldwide.

“…televised from the Hollywood & Highland Center®”
wow, that sounds so glamorous®.

  1. If she’s presenting a competitive Oscar, that would be the first time! ( She did present Peter O’Toole and Robert Altman with the honorary awards)

  5. The list of presenters is not very impressive so far. Have they done away with the group of former winners presenting each of the acting Oscars? That was really well done as long as they had nice things to say about the nominees. At the very least, bring back last year’s winners as was once tradition, back when AMPAS cared about a thing called tradition. What, have Melissa Leo, Christian Bale, Natalie Portman, and Colin Firth all been blackballed?

  8. Yeah I don’t get the omission of Firth, Portman, Bale and Leo (I’d understand about that last one though!).

Maybe they’re a given so no need to mention them?

Anyway, i’ll take any Streep headline from this site even if it chose to skip out on her lifetime achievment Bear. Jokes, jokes.

I bet she’s presenting Picture, Director or Foreign Film. Anything other than that would be puzzling.

  9. Well, Meryl Streep is the unofficial MVP in bringing traffic to Awardsdaily. I wonder if the recent anti-Streep and pro-Davis campaign made any of the readers mad. I know it left me a bad taste.

Back to topic, they better have her present Best Picture because she’s freaking Meryl Streep.

  18. As Best Picture is presented after Actress and Actor (if they stick to that order i.e Actress and then Actor) then Meryl, if she wins, would not have time to make it back to the stage to present as she would be fulfilling her press committments. Worse if they flip and present Actor and then Actress, as has happened in the past, and Meryl wins…..she may as well not leave the stage! I’m sure they will take this into consideration when deciding what she will present. I doubt too that it will be Director as that is traditionally presented just before Actress leaving Meryl little time to get back to her seat in the auditorium where they would want her to be with the other nominees rather than hanging around back stage.

Bryce’s words are extremely vulgar. Yesterday, he said I should wipe cum off my face and called me a nasty bitch. My response to his comment was deleted but Bryce’s original comment stayed in tact. On this thread, he said I am spreading HIV-AIDS. Now if any other reader used such language, they will be banned immediately. Hell, if I called a commenter a nasty bitch, my comments will instantaneous move to the in moderation zone. I find it extremely suspicious that Bryce can say whatever he wants without any consequences. Hmmm, I smell a fish.

  37. @Francois good catch on the Oscar trivia. It was the first thought I had when I saw this headline.

I like the bit about the actors talking about the nominated actors. It was a chance for all nominees to get some spotlight especially those who had no chance of winning or being nominated ever again.

I also enjoy seeing what academy members win the academy lottery and get tickets to the show. Like a few years ago when Gary Busey was randomly there.

  38. If the Academy blows the opportunity and goes with Tom Hanks or Spielberg again, it’ll be their dumbest decision to date. This year’s list is really unimpressive but I believe they won’t announce everybody and they won’t announce the best picture presenter.

In the year of THE ARTIST and HUGO, it’ll be really dumb not to have a Golden Age legend presenting. Please not Kirk! He’s great but he presents regularly. Why not OLIVIA DE HAVILLAND or MICKEY ROONEY?

She’ll do in memorian again, I think.

But I doubt this has anything to do with her chances of winnig BA. Although I still think she’ll loose again (and again and again… *sigh*), it will not have anything to do with her presenting.

  48. I think her chances of winning are greater than they have been in years and this is the closest race for best actress we have seen in decades. It is also the only race that has brought every conceivable form of baggage into the campaign, all of which has been discussed to death. On the positive side, so much has been made on these peripheral issues that people have probably tuned out the noise and will vote with their gut instinct.

I’m still expecting Davis to win. (no, it’ll be Streep…no, Davis….)

  49. I wish the presenters were a little more exciting.
Why not pair Oscar snubbed and two of the biggest actors of the film year – Ryan Gosling and Michael Fassbender?

Emma Stone, cast of Bridesmaids, good choices. They were highlights of the year.

And knock the MTV Awards, but they do a great job of promoting upcoming movies. Granted they air in the summer.

But 2012 has a lot of prestige projects.
You could pair Tom Hardy and Joseph Gordon Levitt (with notable performances this year) and to also promote The Dark Knight Rises.
Bring on glamourous Oscar winner Cate Blanchett – who just happens to have The Hobbit coming out.
How about Oscar snubbed Leo and Carey with the upcoming Great Gatsby?
You could given bring on Julia. Who’s big enough to present on her own. But pair her with Armie Hammer – twice Oscar snubbed – promoting Mirror Mirror.
Or even better – snubbed Charlize with Twilight’s Kristen Stewart to promote their Snow White picture.
You could invite younger presenters this year without going the Miley Cyrus route. The likeable Zac Efron and Taylor Swift have The Lorax opening the weekend after. And then there’s Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence and Liam Hemsworth for Hunger Games. Pair Oscar nominee Jeremy Renner with Chris Evans for Avengers. Or Russell Crowe and Hugh Jackman for Les Miserables. Anyway, end of my dream Oscar show. HA HA
I know they have to reach certain demographics when they choose presenters and they like to invite stars no matter if they contributed to the current film year or the one coming up, but it’s kinda blah right now to me. But good for Meryl!

  57. Yesterdayevening I saw The Help. According to me there is not really one leading lady. There are three ´leading ladies´, either of them could have been nominated for ´Best (each other supporting) acctress’. Viola though has the most dramatic role, maybe that´s the reason why she has been nominated. Viola´s 11 minutes in Doubt were really impressive, but what I saw in The Help was not a lot different from that. In my opinion should her part in The Help (good movie, not original) not be a threat (at all) to the Iron lady.
