I find it interesting that the only Oscar nominee not up for the main award is Hugo, and it just won the CAS. We might see another Sound Mixing/Editing Oscar split as happened with Slumdog Millionaire and The Dark Knight, where Mixing goes to Hugo by default and Editing goes to something louder like War Horse or Transformers.
Heart says Drive for Sound Editing, but mind says Warhorse.
Yay Tintin!!
I still can not believe they did not nominate Tintin for BEST Animated.(Great Snub)
So which film/s are going to win Sound and Sound Editing at the Oscars? I’m interested in everyone’s thoughts, as this is usually a tricky category to predict…
Well, TGWTDT deserved sound effects and foley just for the sound of Martin Vanger’s teeth rolling across the basement floor alone.
Hugo’s sound wins are wonderful, making up for the Eddie snafu.
Dave L, I am going for Hugo for Mixing and War Horse for Editing.
I think “Hugo” for Mixing and “War Horse” for Editing is a safe bet.
They don’t always go to the same film, and usually “Mixing” goes to the film with the most nominations (I guess the voters see it as lots of elements being mixed together) and “Editing” goes to a film with more action and sound effects (the award used to be called Sound Effects Editing).
The Jack, I’d disagree.
When these categories split, it tends to fall into two categories:
- The winners are not nominated in the other categories (e.g. Dreamgirls / Letters from Iwo Jima)
- One of the winners sweeps the Oscars (e.g. Slumdog Millionaire / The Dark Knight)
My prediction is Hugo for both awards. Putting myself in the head of an average, 105-year-old Academy member, I’d tick the same film’s box for both categories, not being particularly aware of the difference between Sound Mixing and Editing, nor even why there are two separate categories.
I have to agree with PaddyM – a split is not impossible, but highly unlikely. This should be a sure thing for Hugo.
You know I just don’t get why the Academy would snub Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2? It did an excellently trememndous job in the global (domestic and foreign) box office and broke alot of records, and had universal critical acclaim like Avatar, Lord of the Rings, Titanic, The King’s Speech, Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Arc, The Sixth Sense, The Green Mile, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and The Lion King (I mean sure it wasn’t nominated but Beauty and the Beast was).
I could name alot of fan favorite movies that won the people’s choice award for Best Picture and was nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars.
A Few Good Men, Silence of the Lambs, Jurassic Park (shouldv’e been nominated for an Oscar for BP), Forest Gump, Apollo 13, Independence Day, Jerry Macguire, Titanic, The Sixth Sense, The Green Mile, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, Spiderman (should’ve been nominated for Best Picture), The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, The Passion of the Christ (and I still don’t see why it wasn’t nominated for Best Picture), The Bourne Supremacy, Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, Coach Carter, Star Trek, Inception, The Social Network, Toy Story 3, The Help, and now Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (which snubbed out of the Oscar nomination for Best Picture).
@SC8O Man, and I thought Coach Carter would’ve been nominated for Best Picture and Samuel Jackson did awesome acting in that movie.
I’m still worried about War Horse. I have yet to see it, but I think back to when I had foolishly predicted Aviator for the Sound Mixing award (it won most technical awards that night) and then knew I was wrong when I heard the clip of a bird chirping in Ray.
I know Seabiscuit didn’t win anything despite having a horse. But War Horse was kind of the big epic of the year. I love Hugo, but its triumphs were more visual than anything else.
Note also that the CAS periodically gets Sound Mixing wrong! (Walk the Line over King Kong? True Grit over Inception?) But the main MPSE award always seems to be in line with the Sound Editing Oscar (it got King Kong and Inception right, and they won both Sound Oscars). So if you’re predicting no split, it make more sense to go with War Horse!
Drats, I posted too soon! King Kong didn’t win any MPSE Awards (and Walk the Line did), so maybe my whole theory of MPSE being more accurate is bunk.
