New York Times Oscar Ballots

I’m generally enjoying this practice by the New York Times to show what various sorts of non-Academy people out there would vote for.  I like the outside-the-box nature of it.  The majority are, of course, picking The Artist. There is one vote for Hugo, one for The Help, and a couple for Tree of Life.   Here are a few:

Anthony Bourdain:
Best Picture – Tree of Life
Best Director – Terrence Malick
Best Actor – Gary Oldman
Best Actress – Viola Davis
Best Supporting Actress – Octavia Spencer
Adapted Screenplay – Moneyball

*he filled out no more than that.

Jeffrey Eugenides:
Best Picture – Tree of Life
Best Director – Terrence Malick
Best Actress – Meryl Streep
Supporting Actor – Christopher Plummer
Original Screenplay – Midnight in Paris
Adapted Screenplay – The Descendants

Al Roker:
Best Picture: Hugo
Best Director: Martin Scorsese
Best Actor: Jean DuJardin
Best Actress: Viola Davis
Best Supporting Actor: Jonah Hill
Supporting Actress: Octavia Spencer
Adapted Screenplay: Hugo
Original: The Artist
His full list here.

Terry Moran:
Best Picture: The Artist
Best Director: Terrence Malick
Best Actor: George Clooney
Best Actress: Meryl Streep
Best Supporting Actor: Christopher Plummer
Supporting Actress: Melissa McCarthy

  1. I’ve been following this, too. Pretty interesting – too bad their aren’t more chefs and writers in AMPAS; however, than god there aren’t more pop stars.

  6. Too bad Roman Polanksi isn’t in the race this year, Minaj would have definitely picked him.

  7. Wow, some of those are pretty horrible.

It’s almost a little infuriating to see less than half of the ballot filled out on some of them. I mean, why even bother submitting one if you’re not even gonna dignify each category with a selection? And some of them are a clear case of “oh, well, I didn’t see every nominated film, but ________ was so good that it should win in every category, anyways.”

  8. I love Jeffrey Eugenides. Not at all surprised by his picks. Very much in tune with his aesthetic.

  9. I am sorry but I just watched Tree of Life and I still don’t know what in hell I watched! Picking it for Best Film is like people actually pretending to like scotch and Andy Warhol paintings. Someone of great social import has pronounced that these things are wonderful and groups of lemmings follow along shouting “Brilliant” “Stupendous” etc. while a small boy in the crowd can see clearly that the Emporer has no clothes.

  11. This is an awesome concept by The Times and for you non-New Yorkers who don’t know who my main man Pat Kiernan is, he is a beloved, awesome morning anchor at NY1 – our local news station. With his enormously popularity in New York I am amazed this guy hasn’t chosen a national gig yet.

  12. Well, well it looks like i not far incorrect about the emerging split clearl the nytimes has evolved with the times and more so than ever on balance their choices show up the rift between critics and oscar talk about lopsided balance sometimes SOMETIMES film critics should carry some clout it about balance for which oscar deems nytimes choices irrelevant we all know tree of life wont win and once again lack of circulation in oz means i can;t see it.

I loved his movie ‘thin red line’ and no doubt in any other year it should hagve been the one to threatent if not beat shakespear in love but for saving private ryan..the rest as they say is history and so will oscar if they keep going their own way…to the point what la times and nytimes crown and other major players aare a comp-lete opposite to what oscar does???
