“What a waste of talent.”
Please be more respectful and stop calling her death a “waste.” Only she knows what demons she had to battle with. We are no position to judge. RIP Whitney.
Shocking I agree with DJw. No one is in any position to judge unless they knew her. As a child of a mother who is an addict, my heart aches for her daughter as I am sure the people in her life were full of hope as she seemed to be getting better and making a comeback. It is hard to be crushed again and again, and I can tell you that her kid is living her worst fear and nightmare today.
@Mel: Yeah, my dad drank/drugged himself to death over a span of 20 years. Every time I drove over there for the weekend and he didn’t answer the door immediately, I thought “Oh…here we go.” Right now, here’s hoping her daughter can find a straight path to happiness.
It’s just awful. And above all, addiction is an illness and not everyone is equipped with the same immune system to fight it. So high-horsed judgment in these situations makes me sick. And bottom line, it’s just not anyone’s place to judge unless they knew her and were affected.
Not nice. Whitney gave us some of the greatest songs of all time, music that means the world to millions, a voice that will live forever.
An artist isn’t obligated to live endlessly to serve her fans — What? so she can wring out every last drop of her talent till she’s 100?
Maybe she already did wring her life dry for our entertainment and maybe that’s part of why she was so troubled.
Be grateful for what she gave us and unless you’ve given the world something astonishing then please show more respect. or we can take a cue to look at our own wasted opportunities — something we can fix — instead of assessing someone else’s tragedies.
Thanks to all the rest of you who’ve had wonderful words to share this very sad day.
Sasha and I talked about how to handle this news — because we don’t always cover entertainers’ passing with strict consistency. We agreed that it didn’t matter whether Whitney made an impact on movies –
because her movie music was always bigger than the movies surrounding them. Her life was bigger than any of us can dream. No matter if she lived to be 48, 28 or 98 — her legacy is already larger than the world deserves.
*sigh*
Oh Whitney. I’ve been with you since “I’m Your Baby Tonight” all through “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength”. Twenty years ago….I would have never believed that you would leave this way. Six years ago, I knew this would be the inevitable – and now it has come.
Let this be a lesson to all you young people who counts Jersey Shore and Lindsay Lohan as inspirations…you fall into the wrong crowd, do the wrong things – your demise won’t be pretty.
My thoughts go out to her family, especially her young daughter.

“Nobody, not even the rain, has such small hands.” I keep thinking of that e.e. cummings poem. (Used so brilliantly in “Hannah and Her Sisters”) Whitney had something special that can’t be duplicated. When she sang, she had the ability to reach inside-a rare thing among pop vocalist.
There are few things in this world that are sheer perfection, and her voice was one of the few things that could be included on that list.
I hope she is somewhere where she can find some of the peace that she brought me over the years. During hard times in my life, during the dark times, during the beginnings and endings of romance when you think the world might somehow end. I had Whitney. She had those small hands.
I hope somewhere the powers that rule the universe are returning the favor.
Forgive my sentimentality, but for some reason this death really hit me.

‘Maybe she already did wring her life dry for our entertainment and maybe that’s part of why she was so troubled.’
That was the case. She gave too much. Nobody gets this, until now, except maybe Oprah Winfrey when she interviewed Whitney Houston.
Those accolades. Those chills. Those amazement we get from her everytime she performs.
She said it’s not for her. It’s not what excite her. She had to escape. Sadly, she found it on drugs and alcohol.
When she performs she always tear it from her soul. What has left of her each performance?
She gave way too much.
Ryan, Im so glad you mentioned that part ‘leavin dry’ and ‘her life being troubled.’
Because that pretty much summed up her life.
So tragic. So depressin.
What could have been her escape besides drugs and alcohol, I wonder?
