  2. At least they’re not starting with Art Direction like they usually do!

Man – I can’t believe we have to wait til almost the end for the Streep/Davis award!

  4. In memoriam is too late in the show. It should be buried in the second or third hour, but not the last half hour.

  6. So, any sweep will be apparent within the first 45-50 minutes.

Cinematography first? Well that could get me off to a sour/ecstatic start – no middle ground on that one.

  7. Wow. They sure are putting the short categories late in the telecast. Isn’t it normally one of the earlier awards, since nobody really cares about them but a select few? Then again this year’s categories seem up in the air so maybe it’ll inject some suspense?

  8. I think the show could have more viewers if those annoying commercial breaks weren’t that long and after every second award. That just bugs me every single time.

  11. Can’t believe they’re waiting that far in to do the In Memorium. Also not wild about Cinematography being the first award. Too important to put up front.

  12. If The Artist wins the first award, then we all know what direction we are heading. Please pretty please Tree of Life for the first win of the night. Cinematography is one of the few categories I really care about and Luzbeki losing would make me feel bitter for the rest of the night. And I will have to wait a lot…AND I MEAN A LOT until seeing who wins Best Actor (Go go Dujardin!). Hope I won’t fall asleep, since here the show will end at 7 AM.

  15. This makes me nervous…something so huge at cinematography first???? So help me, if the fucking Artist takes that off the top I am not sure how I can enjoy a single minute. Please god, please, do not let it win cinematography.

Maybe not Ryman — I’m not sure the producers know in advance who’s winning. I would think not (but who knows?)

But say they do know it’s Plummer. They might be saving him for near the end so he can bring a little uplift for those of us who might not have much else to savor.

  20. I would’ve thought that too Ryan, if it wasn’t for two years ago when Precious beat Up in the Air for Best Adapted Screenplay. Usually at every Oscars ceremony its always Adapted Screenplay that goes first then Original, but when they announced Original Screenplay first, I was thinking in my head “could there be an upset here if they saved Adapted for second?” and sure enough there was. Usually they always give the award to the most obvious winner first then get to the suspense. If you don’t believe me, how many other awards like the SAGs or Golden Globes have decided to do Supporting Actor first? Nearly ALL of them, now with the Oscars they all the sudden save that category for an hour later? It could be a secret calling to tell Max von Sydow that its finally his time. The votes are already in and the producers will do anything to keep the suspense going so the viewers will keep watching. I guess we’ll find out tonight if I’m right or wrong. That’s why I love the Oscars, because you’re never 100% sure on everything. That’s what the no-guts, no glory guesses are for. :)

  21. It’s always fun to see that they know EXACTLY what they’re doing with the acting awards. When they put Actress AFTER Actor it’s always because there’s a chance a legend will win OR history is about to chance – or simply if the race is too close to really call.

Oh, I want Meryl to win her third Oscar, but does it really have to be THIS year – where she’d rob Viola Davis a chance (her only chance?) to win?

If Meryl DOES win, won’t The Iron Lady actually be the worst-reviewed film EVER to win a Lead Acting Oscar? Really? Which film holds that record at the moment?

  22. It’s funny how they always pretend it’s going to be three hours!
The opening – 10 minutes? REALLY?!
Billy’s openings are on youtube. He usually has 5-6 minutes of a movie montage opening followed by 10 minutes on stage which makes around 15 minutes! I bet he’ll get a standing ovation when he takes the stage, which makes for 15 minutes for sure.

    Then:
Plummer and Davis/Streep will receive a standing ovation. And Dujardin, Spence, Plummer, Davis/Streep won’t have an acceptance speech that’s 45 seconds. One of them will go on and on. Plummer likes his speeches long. They won’t interrupt him. They’d be crazy to interrupt him. And of course I bet the shorts are late in the show because the BRIDESMAIDS girls will present the three awards and they’ll have a good routine. So that will take some three-four minutes as well. And who really does believe that best picture will be announced and accepted in 3 minutes?! COME ON!

There will be some clips for best picture (no matter if they’ll be right before the award like last year.)

    I’d say 3 hours 15 minutes up to 3 hours 30 minutes.

    But why does it matter?!?!?!?!

WHY NOT HAVING A SINGLE GOAL: MAKE THE SHOW GOOD. NOBODY WOULD MIND A FOUR HOURS LONG SHOW IF IT IS GOOD. GET GOOD PRESENTERS (not Jennifer Lopez), HAVE SOME BREAKS BECAUSE AWARD AFTER AWARD IS SIMPLY PATHETIC.

  23. They are taking huge risks with the opening three awards. It’s the three nominations that The Artist are most likely to lose, so they’re taking a chance – if The Artist loses most (or just one) of the three then we will be kept on the edge of our seats for the rest of the technicals. If The Artist wins the first three, then there’s just ONE thing left to do: The see if Bejo will pull of one of the biggest sweep upsets in memory. But since that award is also coming up early, let’s just hope that The Artist isn’t a sweeper – otherwise the show will commit suicide from the get-go.

no. You don’t have to go back decades. SANDRA BULLOCK – THE BLIND SIDE. The worst reviewed best actress winner. It has 53 on metacritic. Meryl’s THE IRON LADY has 54.
