This is sacred ground – classic American lit – and attempts to film it have not been successful or, more often, abandoned.
If they don’t capture the spirit in which Kerouac wrote, along with some of the backstories that were not in the book, it can’t succeed. It’s not just a buddy road trip; it’s a philosophical journey that illustrates the post-war morphing of US values and culture.
Proceed with extreme caution.

It’s notoriuos that in the major festivals, the presidente of the jury has a great influence in the final result. Not always, of course, because he didn’t vote alone, and in some curious cases when you find that he was the main force for the choices, he wasn’t (Clint Eastwood choice for the Palme D’Or-94 was not “Pulp Fiction”, “The Man With No Name” leading the choice for a violent american movie as it seemes then and for several years, and in 2007 he declared that he prefered “Burnt By The Sun” by Nikita Mikhalkov and “La Reine Margot” by Patrice Chéreau, and the “Pulp” victory was supported by a group led by Catherine Deneuve).
But being presidente matters, and a lot. Nani Moretty will be Cannes one this year. When he was at Venice-2001 Mira Nair “Monsoon’s Weeding” win the Golden Lion. When asked why Ulrich Seidl “Dog Days” didn’t win nothing, Moretti answers that he will never allowed a “fascist” movie, so cruel with it characters to be awarded. (As usual, “fascist” used as a adjective, instead of a substantive striped of it terrible and precise political meanings; ironically Seidl is compared a lot to Michael Haneke, both as “fascist” for treatting with no pitty their characters, in the case of Haneke, specially ironically in the case of “The Piano Teacher”, his adaption of a book by Elfriede Jelinek, a well-known former member of the Austrian Commmunist party).
I wrote all that to say that with Moretti in the presidency and “On The Road” (probably) on the competition, there is a lot of good chances for a Palme D’Or for Walter Salles, unlike the movie will be a clear artistic flop (booed on the oficial presentations, etc), which I sincerely doubt that will be.

Motorcycle Diaries and Central Station show that Salles is up to this. He is quoted as saying he wants to show “a generation colliding with its society,” and had his cast attend beatnik boot camp to dig into Kerouac. Hopefully he has succeeded where his predecessors have not.

The cast is great, except for Stewart who is just not a good actor in my opinion. And yes, she looks like Jodie Foster, she always has. When she played her daughter in Panic Room, I saw that in the theater and annoyingly had to nudge my gf more than once and comment how the kid looked just like Jodie Foster.
I have high hopes for this film….maybe Stewart has gotten better.

Kristen Stewart was a revelation for me in The Runaways as Joan Jett – great fire and spirit, and she was also pretty good in Welcome to the Rileys, so i think she has some substance as an actor, and under good direction – she is an asset to a movie – her name alone will help!

Stewart impressed me in Into the Wild and Adventureland, both of which required some reckless-teen behavior that might play well in this. People started crapping on Dunst when she went into Spiderland but her talent was evident early on and now she’s hot again… If Stewart became an acclaimed, mature actress (like Jodie Foster) I wouldn’t be surprised at all.

Stewart can’t act to save her life instead forces her own dull personality on the characters she plays. Several directors noted that she changes the lines and tells the director how to set up a scene. Her godparents are some bigwigs in Hollywood so she’s allowed to do as she wants.
I see people constantly hammering into the public minds how she is some genius young actress but it’s not working. No amount of PR can achieve it.
She’s dead behind the eyes. Another problem is that author’s family is unhappy with this adaptation, that’s why it hasn’t been released for so long. Also G.Hedlund hasn’t proven his talent either.

“Stewart can’t act to save her life instead forces her own dull personality on the characters she plays.”
Exactly! Hyperboles are so often unjustified, but in this case it’s perfectly fine. Stewart has zero acting talent. She can’t create or act a character, but you have to readapt characters to Stewarts “personality”.

Kristen is always the same awkward, angsty, fidgety character running her hands through her own hair….which is exactly what she is in interviews as well. She can’t act. She is always just herself. Hoping she’s been learning how to though, b/c she sure is cute and nice to look at….but if she were to ruin something otherwise great, I might have to hate her. She’s the female Keanu Reeves….acts for shit, but nice to look at and somehow keeps getting movies.

Acting is not something you just learn at late age. Sure, experience counts, but with 22 it’s pretty obvious whether someone has acting talents or not. Stewart may become decent, if she challenges herself, and continues, but a good actress she’ll never become.

Sorry Dane, dead WRONG on Hedlund, who turned in a marvelously charismatic and technically difficult performance in Country Strong, where he learned to play guitar, sing country music and steal an entire picture away from a big star. His Beau Hutton character undergoes several emotional turning points and the actor, warm and soft-spoken and as country as it gets, was a revelation. Don’t believe me? Then YouTube his clips of Timing is Everything, Chances Are and Give in to Me. Close your eyes and you’d swear you’re hearing a damned impressive country musician (he trained with Tim McGraw for months before shooting). Better yet, just see the film — his vulnerability and silences are very moving.

Weird to see comments about Kristen not being a good actress. Before Twilight came out, she was always touted as being a solid young actress. Read any of those reviews. Critics like her. Seems that the Twilight movies have given her a stigma to overcome more than anything. If you’re going to accuse her of playing the same type of character, there are dozens of equally famous actors you can add to that list.
The rest of the cast is superb (Viggo will always lure me into watching anything). Would not be surprised if it in fact opens Cannes.
