(LATimes) Michael Clarke Duncan, the tall and massively built actor with the shaved head and deep voice who received an Academy Award nomination for his moving portrayal of a gentle death row inmate in the 1999 prison drama “The Green Mile,” died Monday. He was 54.
Duncan died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, according to a statement from his publicist, Joy Fehily. He had suffered a heart attack in July and did not recover.
He was a great actor! Will always remember him for The Green Mile and the guilty pleasure that was The Scorpion King and personally,I think his time came too soon:(
Thank you Michael Clarke Duncan for your brilliance. You will be missed. That kind soul is so evident just looking at his eyes. Strength and love to your family.
RIP big guy. I agree with the other posters who comment that he was a pretty darn good actor considering he was so physically intimidating and enormous. It’s easy to overlook how good of an actor someone can be when they are also physically larger then life.
Very sad, a great actor and seemed like a great guy. RIP Michael
He always will be remembered for John Coffrey and “The Green Mile”, but I like him in other movies. Must confess that recently I had a good time seeing “The Slammin’ Salmon”, a modest, stupid and cool comedy. Duncan was very fun on it.
RIP. I always thought Caine winning over the other 4 was the Weinstein machine at full force and The Academy wanting to give Cider House something. As I have gotten a little older ( I was 21 when Green Mile came out) I think Michael Clarke Duncan’s performance has grown and affected me more each time I see the movie. This is a really sad day. He will be sorely missed.
This is really sad. I assumed he’d been getting better since we never really got to many updates on how he was doing. I didn’t realize he was still in the hospital even. It didn’t seem like that long ago that he’d gone with the Craig Ferguson show to Scotland. He seemed healthy then as always. 🙁 I just figured he was going to get better.
Class act. Such a shame he went out this young, and showed so much potential.
Boy! this has been a hard year in entertainment deaths.
Wonderful, underappreciated actor. Nice human being. Lover of all cats. You will be missed, Michael Clarke Duncan. RIP.
He is the reason I loved the Green Mile. I think the Academy made a mistake in not awarding him for his performance, I find it to be pure brilliance….and I think I would go as far to say superior to Michael Caine’s performance in Cider House Rules. Great actor, wish he would have gotten better film roles through the years. RIP Mr. Duncan.
