I suspect this will be a different year for Weinstein. BP doesn’t seem to be on his way but he could actually win all the acting categories but Hathaway and score about 6 or 7 nominations.
what Jaqueline said
+ I think Harvey will want to campaign both women, and I doubt he’ll put both in his Supporting Actress campaign. Moreover, he has brains and knows that Maggie has a great shot for a nomination with The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.
Maggie will go lead, + people say she’s more of a lead in Quartet than Jennifer Lawrence is in Silver Linings.
As I’ve said before, just wait for the Golden Globes, where Maggie can easily end up with 3 nominations:
– Lead Actress Comedy
– Supporting Actress Motion Picture
– Supporting Actress in a TV Series
Once this has started, things will be difficult to change.
She has Weinstein behind her, she has the buzz from Marigold and Downton Abbey, and the release date is good. I’d say she has more of a shot than Knightley or Cotillard. The Academy loves veteran Brits. I’m pretty sure they don’t mind if 2 are nominated in the same year.
I don’t think it’s lighter than Mrs Henderson presents.
SO lovely to see Tom Courtenay here! I remember him fondly as Pasha in Doctor Zhivago !
Pauline Collins too!!! Shirley Valentine herself !
Love the look of this movie – they could simply stick a camera in front on Maggie and I would watch it! Can’t wait to see Pauline Collins too!!!!
The trailer looks charming. Definitely want to see it. Michael Gambon is such a great actor. He never gets credit (or nominated) for anything, but he is one of the most consistently fine actors working in film today.
I have a hunch, too, that this may be too light for AMPAS tastes.
Smith may have a much better chance for a nomination as Best Supporting Actress for “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel”. She really showed her acting chops in that movie. Her comic timing is impeccable. AMPAS won’t ignore her this year. “Quartet” may be just the movie the members need to remind them of how good she was in TBEMG.
Seems very slight. Same feeling I had after seeing the trailer for “Song for Marion.” I have a feeling this movie (or “Marion”, for that matter) could leave voters saying, “this is OK, but not as good as ‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’,” and help move that film and its perfs up on a few ballots. To what extent, I don’t know. Just a feeling.
I have my doubts if Maggie Smith will be nominated for Lead Actress!
The competition is really hard!
By the way, right now here are my personal TOP 5 who i think will be nominated:
Marion Cotillard – Rust & Bone
Jennifer Lawrence – Silver Linings Playbook
Emanuelle Riva – Amour
Quenzhane Wallis – Beast of the Southern Wild
Mary Elizabeth Winstead – Smashed
Runner Up:
Naomi Watts – The Impossible
Keira Knightley – Anna Karenina
Jessica Chastain – Zero Dark Thirty
Helen Mirren – Hitchcock
Maggie Smith – Quartet
