On this week’s episode Craig Kennedy, Ryan Adams and I discuss Best Picture – Argo is very much in the lead right now but still has some competition. Best Actress – can Jennifer Lawrence pull this thing out? Halloween movies and then, if you still want to listen – we discuss the election in the second hour, at around the 60 minute mark.
Here’s a well-known Iranian-Canadian’s perspective on Argo (he’s the same guy who hosts that radio show on which Billy Bob Thornton had his temper tantrm a couple of years ago)
Hey everybody, thanks for listening.
ChrisFlick, I’m biased but frankly “a showcase for Bradley Cooper” is just not a movie I’d be all that interested in seeing. “Jennifer Lawrence, hot piece of ass” on the other hand…
I don’t want to speak for Sasha, but I didn’t take her comments as a slam against Lawrence per se. If memory serves, Sasha was a big proponent of Winter’s Bone.
Joey,
70-80% of all high profile actresses are VERY attractive and will give male academy voters erections. Why single out Jennifer Lawrence as the one getting votes because she’s hot instead of her performance? Why not say the same about Marion Cotillard, Michelle Williams, Anne Hathaway, Rooney Mara, Keira Knightley, Kerry Washington etc. All the above have hot or racy scenes in Oscar hopeful films that would give any man a boner. Lawrence’s in comparison are pretty tame and clothed. The negative comments directed at her just seemed petty and personal. Sasha and Jeff broke up their podcasting team post The Silver Linings Playbook screening disagreement so there is that pink elephant in the room.
Not trying to be too negative so I will let it go. I was just shocked. Loved the rest of the podcast as usual.
Jennifer Lawrence is fantastic in Silver Linings Playbook. It’s a great role and Lawrence absolutely knocks it out of the park…here’s hoping Jennifer Lawrence wins the Oscar.
I’m a liberal woman in the deep south making her way through college with Pell grants that were expanded thanks to the president. After receiving so much crap from my friends and family down here for supporting Obama, it feels wonderful to hear the opinions expressed in the second hour. I don’t feel quite as alone now. Thanks for the political posts you’ve done as well, Sasha, along with the excellent awards coverage. Your site is always one of the first I visit everyday.
Anyway, here’s to hoping Riva and Knightley get nominated. I like Jennifer Lawrence but I’d rather she win an Oscar for a better role than the one in SLP.
Is there something amiss with Silver Linings Playbook that is not being addressed? Seems odd that what sounds ostensibly like a showcase for Bradley Cooper has seen all the ink go to Jennifer
Lawrence. Having not seen it yet, just from what I’ve read.
That’s not why Sasha says that. A lot of men will vote for her because they consider her hot. Her performance is great in Silver Linings Playbook, but her beauty will help her win votes among men.
Sasha Stone on Jennifer Lawrence’s performance in The Silver Linings Playbook: “She’s just a hot piece of ass.”
OUCH! Did Jennifer Lawrence steal your boyfriend or something Sasha? You are being kinda catty towards a 22 year old girl who has received nothing but outstanding notices on her acting. Unlike Marion Cotillard who spends half her time naked in Rust and Bone, Lawrence has zero nude scenes. You are attacking the girl’s performance for no good reason; just because you think she’s too pretty.
My predictions of Best Actress nominess:
Jennifer Lawrence – Silver Lining Playbook
Naomi Watts – The Impossible
Marion Cotillard – Rust & Bone
Keira Knightley – Anna Karenina
Jessica Chastain – Zero Dark Thirty
I personally can’t see Dench with an Oscar nomination for The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.
And somehow I can’t see them nominate 2 French performances and a little kid at the same time, at least one of the three will be dropped (if not 2) in my humble opinion.
I think:
the Harvey women will get in (Lawrence and Smith)
+ Jessica Chastain + 1 French Performance + something of the rest that everyone’s talking about, maybe Anna Karenina.
Thanks, Ryan!
Where was episode 4? I was on iTunes, and episode 3 loaded twice. Am I the only one who noticed this?
Joey, you can find Episode 4 here.
Not sure why it doesn’t show up on iTunes. We’ll see if we can fix that. And by ‘we,’ I mean Sasha will fix it. The same way she fixes everything else in these podcast, from intro to outro. Really all Craig and I know how to do is ‘sing into the can.’
