One of the best things about this movie, as with most of David O. Russell’s films, is the rhythm. It’s one of his gifts, timing dialogue and editing just right. This scene is a great example of that:

You are right. I should see it first. All this extended hype and discussion before anyone can see it just makes it harder to not form opinions and feelings though.
Mel, you haven’t seen the movie. I might very well agree with you in a few weeks, but calling a flick irresponsible based on some clips designed to attract as wide an audience as possible is irresponsible on your end. And of course, love doesn’t cure mental illness, but again, the film might cover those questions. Russell’s a smart guy and a hell of a director. He’s gone to REALLY dark places in his movies. I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt.
And the whole “my ____ was bipolar and this flick seems to have it wrong” ignores the fact that bipolar disorders manifest themselves and are treated in a variety of forms. No singular form of bipolar disorder or depression represents a “typical” example.
No. All accounts and it’s been many that I have read call this a comedy, a feelgood and many mention that the mental illness is just forgotten in about the middle of the movie like it just went away.
That’s irresponsible. We live in a society where mental illness is still very stigmatized and misunderstood. Pretending it’s nothing and love takes it away is dangerous and dumb. I’m definitely going to see this movie and Jennifer Lawrence is a favorite of mine. I wish she had won for Winter’s Bone and I am sure she is fabulous.
It’s just really hard to hear the hype on this if you are anyone that has lived with someone with bi-polar disorder b/c it reeks of bullshit. Topped off by the fact that the character is supposed to be in her late 30s and Russell cast a young 20(maybe 21 when they shot it) year old who is currently starring in a franchise in which she plays 16 years old…..and we know he got caught feeling up his 19 year old Niece a couple years ago and claimed it was b/c “she was acting provocatively”
It sounds like David O Russell took a book and turned it into his fantasy…..b/c let’s be honest the guy is probably bi-polar himself and clearly had a penchant for the much younger. So here ya go….he wrote a fantasy for himself….
Box Office Prospects are pretty high too. The screenplay has plenty of sports talk, as well as a Dancing with the Stars-ish subplot (which I liked). Its Thanksgiving Weekend release date is perfect, also.
Saw SLP last night.
Inevitable: Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Screenplay
Likely: Robert DeNiro, Best Director
Somewhat likely: Jacki Weaver
Small chance: Bradley Cooper
Lawrence is the standout in the movie, and in a weak category, a nomination is a lock and she just might take it, even though it’s solid, entertaining performance in what is essentially a rom-com. Seeing is believing in this case.
Robert DeNiro is decent. He hasn’t been nominated for twenty years and has a crying scene. I wasn’t totally crazy about his performance, but if I set my bias aside, the AMPAS may go for him.
Jacki Weaver is fine, but I’m not sure if I can see her getting in, even in a weak year. Again, the Weinstein factor would have to be in play. She probably has a better chance than I realize.
Bradley Cooper is okay, but overshadowed by the previous two. Considering the state of the Best Actor race, Weinstein would need to kiss a lot of babies to get Cooper in. It’s not impossible, but I would be surprised, especially if Hugh Jackman delivers, as there are four slots already spoken for.
Considering there is very little opportunity for other nods, I guess it would make sense if all four actors got in bringing its total nominations to 7, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s 5 or 6.
Golden Globe category seems to be Comedy/Musical, but who knows. The subject matter (mental illness) may tip it to Drama? It will be interesting if it’s the former, as it will have to go up against Les Misérables and leave Argo to duke it out with Lincoln in Drama. Argo also had some lightness to it, but not as much as Silver. It’s not a comedy in the vein of Flirting with Disaster, as I don’t recall any dramatic scenes, but there the separation between them in gravity is thin-ish.
@Flor
“@brian oh, I know. I just named Saorise because it was the first young actress that came to mind but I guess I tried to do a generaization with that and came out in the wrong way. I just do not get why JEnnifer is OH SO PRAISED when other young actresses are given better performances.”
That`s subjective. They gave better performances from your POV, not from universal POV.
“Rooney Mara does not get enough love for TGWTDT and she became Lisbeth for a whole year;”
Because many people think Rapace = Lisbeth Salander. And Mara is a total douche as an interviewee. Stuck up, obnoxious and charisma-free. While Lawrence is charismatic, bubbly, has a great sense of humor and doesn`t take herself seriously unlike Rooney “I tried to suck at NOES audition because I didn`t want to get the part, but gee, my worst was better than other candidate`s best and got the part” Mara.
“Saorise has not only been good in everything but she has given really amazing performances”
That`s how many Lawrence fans and critics feel about Lawrence. And sorry to break it to you but THG wouldn`t have been such a gigantic boxoffice hit with great reviews if Lawrence hadn`t given a star-making performence. She is Katniss. Your Ronan would have been totally wrong for that part because she has outwordly look that isn`t relatable. Great actress but lacks the everywoman quality that Lawrence has which is essential for Katniss.
“Mia Wasikowska is a young little princess: so classy and good in everything too and I am sure there are more young actresses to praise.”
And a total charisma vaccuum. No offense, but not everyone is meant to carry movies or stand out. I`ve seen Wasikovska in several movies and her blandness was always upstaged by livelier actors.
“I guess that being the lead in the franchise of the moment and having Harvey on your side really changes things in Hollywood.”
Bitter much? She was an Oscar nominee before landing a franchise. Also, unlike your Ronan who seems to be in some weird competition with Chloe Moretz (Moretz does a teen assassin movie, so must Ronan; Moretz does a vampire movie, so must Ronan), Lawrence is beating to her own drum and so far has picked better movies to be in. Hey, nobody forced Ronan to drop out of The Hobbit and sign for a movie based on Stephenie Meyer book just because one role was supporting and another is the lead. But she did. You make your own bed so don`t complain when competition snags better roles. I mean, Meyer crap and some vampire crap (that was seen at TIFF and labelled crap) back to back, what was she thinking?
It’s absurd seeing some of these outrageously sexist comments claiming no director can see past Jennifer Lawrence’s looks. Jennifer Lawrence owns every scene she is in in this film, and has two in particular that make you want to stand up and applaud on the spot. She’s brilliant in it and it has nothing to do with her youth or breasts. Come back and comment when you’ve seen the film, please.
Yikes. Let’s see the fucking thing first. And the whole “my ____ was bipolar and this flick seems to have it wrong” ignores the fact that bipolar disorders manifest themselves and are treated in a variety of forms. No singular form of bipolar disorder or depression represents a “typical” example.
And Jennifer Lawrence is legal. Not sure where the perverted element lies concerning her character.
“but I guess being the only young American actress around and having boobs does wonders for your career.”
Charming sentiment. Lawrence is very talented, she’s displayed her skills and range in a very brief timespan, and knocking her for her large breasts is insane. She’s not rocking bolt-ons and grinning her way through trash. Besides, attractive on-screen presences have been desirable since cinema’s inception. Film’s a visual medium designed in part to carry personal glamour.
I grew up with a mentally ill sister, beginning in high school. She died in her sleep at 54, after years of toxic anti-psychotics. They destroyed her looks and her body. So watching these glib clips of this fantasy leaves me cold. Everything about SLP is fake.
Word.
I grew up with a bi-polar mother and it’s hell on Earth. It’s a constant lifelong struggle that is not only self-destructive to the person but to everyone around them who loves them. There is no cure, no magical medication, the meds are always changing and quit working, ect….it’s not some sugar-coated little feelgood in which you cast a 20 year old in a role meant for someone in their late 30s b/c yer a pervert…..and you pretend that some young puss makes it all better.
@charlotte…sounds like you are caught up in the story of the characters, rather than the acting of the actors. It’s easy to fall in love with a character when its written well. But acting is a different animal. What is the actor bringing on TOP of what’s already written?

@Flor … Try not to worry so much about how your acting tastes line up with others or do not. As long as you enjoy the acting of Saorise Ronan then that’s all that really matters. : )
@charlotte and it’s difficult to take YOUR opinion seriously when you aclearly are on one side. Jennifer is natural on screen but her acting is nothing outstanding to be garnering all these praise. She was ok on THG, pretty good in Winter’s Bone, TERRIBLE in X-Men. She is not the best young actress around but I guess being the only young American actress around and having boobs does wonders for your career.
Do not tell me about her GREAT performance in THG because she was not great. All the little girls stole all the scenes they shared with her (but she is supposedly the Best ACtress Oscar Nominee, mind you) and she clearly made the director HARD and that’s why she got cast because she didn’t bring something to the role that no other actress could have brought too. Her performance was generic and not movie star “hero” like which was expected from her since Katniss IS a hero. The director seemed as if he was sleeping with her every time she was on screen for the way he filmed her.
Now, tell me why she is supposed to be the best young actress in the world right now and tell me why Saorise Ronan is not.
@mel….perhaps watching the film (or at least reading the synopsis of the story) will give you a better understanding of the character). “Tiffany” is grieving the loss of her husband, and is dealing with depression….she has emotional problems. Tiffany is not sleeping with her Co workers for money. Tiffany wants to love and be loved.
@Flor: Yes, the praise for the actors is justified….the acting is excellent in this scene as well as the rest of the film. As I suggested to Mel, see for yourself and then your opinion will have more validity.
@Jacob: Jennifer Lawrence is amazing in Silver Linings Playbook….Lawrence is the standout, a very naturalistic actress who, judging by reviews has earned an enormous amount of respect for someone so young. Go see the film, because it’s difficult to take your opinion seriously when you have yet to see the film.
And this is supposed to be an oscar-worthy performance?
I still don’t see anything overwhelming, anything powerful enough in Lawrence’s performance to be the frontrunner in the race so far (besides, in the wrong race, because she is not playing a leading character, she’s supporting), I still see something any normal and regular actress could easily do.
And I also still think that the fact she’s still so young will not help her for a win. (Unless you have given a more “serious-minded” performance like Marlee Matlin’s one in Children of a Lesser God)…
I’m sorry but she confesses that she gets paid for sex and she says it like that, I mean, withouth a problem? WTF is this movie?
Can someone please tell me why these two are supposed to be running for an OScar? I hope the hype is based on better acting than this.
Well, if I wasn’t convinced this movie was about O. Russell’s perverted desires with younger women before…..I am now!!
Gross.
I’m dying to see this movie! The chemistry evident in the banter between these two is reason enough to see the film. David O. is definitely one of my favorite directors : )
On another note, SkyFall is now sitting at 94% on rotten tomatoes. 72 positive reviews and only 4 rotten so far. Some are calling it the best James Bond ever! This winter is shaping up to be one of the best holiday movie seasons of all time. We deserve it seeing how last holiday season was such a total shit-show.
OT: Saw Lincoln last night. Stellar. Day-Lewis, Jones, Field, Kushner locks. Spader hilarious.

Pretty goddamn great a movie it is.
Ehh…I can see their acting. It doesn’t feel that honest, it just feels like a decently-executed comedy bit
Excited for this film. The buzz died down after TIFF and now it’s gaining that steam again. It will open at nov 21, same as Life of Pi, Rise of the Guardians, and the terrible Red Dawn. Tough competitions.
Hope this movie does “well.”
Jacki Weaver … i was so obsessed with her performance in Animal Kingdom, finest of that year. The only reason why i am looking forward to this movie is because of the highly praised performances from the entire cast.
And that’s “Silver” not “Silvet”.
I love this clip….great chemistry between Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper, both actors are wonderful but Lawrence is mesmerizing. Really looking forward to Silvet Linings Playbook.
Jacki could get nominated in a love sweep for the film (kinda like Good Will Hunting sweeping in Minnie Driver to a nod). Lawrence going lead helps as well. However, she won’t win. There isn’t that much material.
I couldn’t find Bradley Cooper any less convincing, actually. There’s no suggestion of mental illness in his portrayal – he’s treating the character as a comedic device, which is why he’s funny, but not at all believable. One only needs to have a slight understanding of mental illness to be able to see straight through his acting here.
Jennifer is great, but I can’t imagine her winning an Oscar, she needs a better movie for win. I heard a lot of people talking that she reminds Julie Christie performance in Darling. Agree, there are some similarities between them. She definitely will rule the movie industry in the upcoming decade.
Jacki probably does have a chance because the category is so weak.
I’d like to know more about Jacki Weaver’s performance in this film. Is it likely to generate awards interest? Or will it be overshadowed by the attention received by Cooper, Lawrence and De Niro?
I know that Lawrence is getting most of the praise for this movie, but based on that clip, Bradley Cooper seems the clear standout. He owns that scene!
He’s also getting some interesting acting out of these two.
