    Same Line-up as the Bafta’s. I don’t think anyone would have predicted Anna Karenina. I’m glad for Skyfall and Life of Pi, although I would have liked to have seen Amour in this category as well, it had a tremendous style in cinematography!

  • Amour’s cinematography was gorgeous. Far too subtle in style to be nominated anywhere major, though.

    Anna Karenina isn’t a great film, but it’s beautifully designed. Looks like the guilds will like it, about as much as they did Atonement lol. Lovely cinematography.

    Still think Django will be in Oscar’s five. They fucking adore Robert Richardson.

  • I knew The Master wouldn’t be in here, nor BAFTA. Maybe Oscar. But the film is too divisive, it seems, to pick up nominations from most places. The guilds aren’t liking it much, predictably.

    Ugh. The marching orders are clear; get Wally Deakins in the most advantageous position to win an Oscar because he’s due. Just like Bigelow in 2009 for director . Hell of a way to go. 🙁

    Today (Bafta and ASC) show how strong is Life of Pi. Hope this going under the radar helps the film for the rest of the season till Oscars come.

    I’m not one of those who hated LES MIS, though I didn’t love it either, but can someone explain to me how, in a year when you have much better choices like THE DEEP BLUE SEA, THE MASTER, DJANGO UNCHAINED, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES and ZERO DARK THIRTY, why this film’s completely lackluster cinematography continues to pick up nominations everywhere?

    Argo/Zero Dark Thirty got a major hit here. Snubbed in favor of Anna Karenina. So Lincoln is the only film with all the guilds nominations… oh wait… it can’t win because Spielberg missed the BAFTAS. The nominations tally tomorrow will speak for itself.

    I know I shouldn’t be surprised by The Master snub but I really am. Would like Miranda to win this for Life of Pi but I think Deakins is going to walk away with it (11th ASC nomination for him!)

    Deakins has won a lot of awards from the ASC so they might want to give the award to someone else this year. I guess Les Miz is popular with the guilds, that award surprises me.

    Deakins will rise with the sun tomorrow, and, rightly or wrongly, probably ride it right to the podium. He has been wronged in the past and it’s make-up time.

    Seamus McGarvey most deserving of his nomination for “Anna Karenina”.

    I like their list, with the exception of “Lincoln”. I would have put Greig Fraser’s work in “Snow White and the Huntsman” and/or “Zero Dark Thirty” in its place.

    I hope Roger Deakins for “Skyfall” gets the nomination and the Academy Award (. . . . FINALLY!) The Oscar is sometimes given for a body of great work, and Roger Deakins certainly embodies that type . . . it doesn’t hurt that “Skyfall’s” masterful cinematography is one of the films many delights.

    He captures all those luxurious exotic locations in the film perfectly, and the final shots of the scenes in the chapel are breathtakingly beautiful.

    Anna Karenina… I knew they’ll get McGarvey in!!! Hope he makes it till tomorrow… And Les Miserables doing pretty well on guilds, though I would prefer Richardson’s Django Unchained over Cohen’s work… Also a great news, Life of Pi is on a roll baby!!!

    Loved all these movies. Sorry there are only five nominations because this year there should have been at least ten. My amazement at the purblind dislike for Les Mis on this site continues, because regardless of what you think of musicals or – in this case – more of an opera, they are extremely hard to do in an accessible way. The stylistic challenges of committing Les Mis to film were pretty extraordinary; the guilds seem to be responding to this. Anna Karenina was also a daring piece of writing and design, and depended on the quality of the DP for its narrative transitions. This is not to say other films did not do as well( or better), only that the guilds seem to be recognizing complexity and innovation as much as conventional art. For the perfect blend of these two concepts, see Life of Pi! So very glad to see this movie getting recognized! Sorry Argo and Amour are not up here, too, but very relieved Lincoln was given the honors it deserved; it looks like a consensus will continue to build around this film as time goes on.

    McGarvey REALLY deserves it, you can love or hate the film, but I think the production values should be universally acclaimed, nominations should happen in score, costume design, production design, cinematography, the very least. I also loved the editing, but I know that’s a long shot.

    See, I was right, Les Miz makes the cut! So many keep dismissing Les Miz in hopes that it will really miss out on these key nominations. Eat your hearts out!

    Bob Burns – Look again, Lincoln IS included. Same noms as the BAFTAs, which is pretty incredible considering how many different films were/are thought to be in contention for cinematography. Will be interesting to see if Oscar matches these same five.

    Les Miserábles make the cut in all guilds except WGA. It is a strong contender.

    Les Mis wasn’t eligible for wga so it doesn’t count, but yeah screenplay is a longshot, hans’t been nominated anywhere but with ampas you juste never know.

    Such a weird year. In the end I wouldn’t be surprise if the Academy snubs most of the ASC nominees. Imagine them being 2/5, with The Master, Django Unchained and Zero Dark Thirty instead of Lincoln, Anna Karenina and Les Miserables.

    Jesus, they even nominated Les Miserables here? I had serious problems with the camerawork in that film. Then again, they nominated The King’s Speech as well and I also found that one problematic. Go figure…

    I am shocked, really. These guys usually have an excellent record on nominating worthy films. But leaving out The Master is absolutely shameful.

    I am still swooning over how the camera dances through the department store.
