Sasha Stone has been around the Oscar scene since 1999. Almost everything on this website is her fault.

TIME is no film critics and there is no bias nor creaming over fantasy darling. And so they are absolutely right in picking the best and most deserved Naomi Watts and excluding Jennifer Lawrence.
“The only film where telling backstories didn’t come off like a plot device was in Lincoln, because the telling was so articulate, and showing would have disrupted the flow and mood.”
– Abe sitting down to tell stories did disrupt the flow, though, particularly when the yarns got longer.
SLP is just weak writing, and it pains me to say that knowing their hearts were in the right place. But that doesn’t change that it’s so stereotypical yet hits you over the head with its cliches as if the longer you’re expose to them, the more likely you’ll cave in and appreciate the characters because they’re such good people.
The problem with most 2012 Oscar films is an imbalance of Show and Tell. Don’t have Jean Valjean singing about that loaf of bread–show him stealing it! Don’t have Pat flashback to his wife–show it in the first place. The only film where telling backstories didn’t come off like a plot device was in Lincoln, because the telling was so articulate, and showing would have disrupted the flow and mood.
@Scotty, my God, Jacki Weaver DOES look like Sally Struthers! They could play sisters.
“she is very attractive and young”
Apparently that’s all it takes to win numerous awards and get critical acclaim nowadays.
The critics and awarding bodies loving Jennifer Lawrence and her mediocre acting in SLP will be one of the greatest mysteries of life to me. That Parlay scene in particular was excruciating all-around.
Oh, but she’s soooooooo talented and natural! And she’s so cool and and she had pneumonia! BTW, what happened to that? She recovered quick. Probably the fastest pneumonia case the world has ever seen.
Yeah, gotta disagree about those calling Hugh the weak link. I thought he was fantastic, and I hated Les Mis. Cooper is by far the weakest to me, though I will say that I thought 2012 was a very soft year for lead actors. Lead actress, however, was the total opposite.
well, maybe NO ONE from “Silver Linings Playbook” was available. and an upset to the Jennifer Lawrence apple cart would be more than welcome. especially if Ms. Watts took the stage and clutched the Oscar–which would be the respectable result. Watts was fantastic. the best i can say about Lawrence is that she is very attractive and young and i hope she gets better parts in the future.
And absolutely NO ONE from “Silver Linings Playbook”. Guess they NYTimes didn’t like it enough to include it.
But of course, the NYTimes-ers aren’t members of the Academy, but they readership boasts more than a few.
So it’s interesting to me that the include Qu’venzhane Wallis and NOT JLaw…is this singling an upset?
@ Bette, agree about Denzel. How mature is Little Q? OMG, she is so smart!
Love these videos. Does Time do this every year?
Off topic, but I bet someone here has an idea- is Newsweek still doing their annual Oscar Roundtable this year? It usually is released in January but I’ve seen nothing online. Sasha- any idea? Love watching the actors get together… even more so than THR one because it’s less crowded.
All in the Family? Jacki Weaver? Did they confuse her with Sally Struthers?
Leave Hugh alone!
Until I see The Master, I’d switch Denzel out for Hawkes. Or even Cooper. Hawkes was wronged.
@Archer
Yeah…but unlike Jhud, Hugh’s singing sucked in Les Mis. “Bring Him Home” wasn’t good.
I agree with Chris…I would have swapped out Jackman for Hawkes.
^ Yes – its sounds like a take on All in the Family – politically incorrect husband and his “unfiltered” wife. Only set in Boston.
OT but OMG Jacki Weaver has signed onto a CBS sitcom!
I’m sorry Chris but there’s no way Hugh is weakest. If JHud can win an Oscar for And I am Telling You, Hugh deserves it for Valjean’s Soliloquy. Bradley Cooper’s performance for me was the weakest and did not stand out. He just played a different character than his usual comic roles.
Agree with Alexg. Jess seems tired, but at least she looks great.
She’s not her usual bubbly self, but I think she’s allowed to take a moment, a day “off”.
She doesn’t seem snooty. She seems tired. Which makes sense.
Is it me or does Jessica Chastain, who I LOVE seem a bit snooty in her demeanor here?
Anne sadly is always annoying and sadly never comes off as genuine to me. Though I do love her and thought she was AMAZING in Rachel Getting Married
John Goodman is THE MAN! He so should have been nominated for Flight
Sally Field is a class act ! Hoping for an upset !
Great video. Still disappointed that John Hawkes didn’t get nominated. He was fantastic. Take out Hugh, who was good but not great and I think the weakest out of the 5 nominees, for John.
