I’ve loved Malick’s work so far, and I’ve got tickets to see this next weekend so I’m hoping he continues his winning streak with me. And my ranking of his films would be:
1. The Thin Red Line
2. Days of Heaven
3. Badlands
4. The Tree of Life
5. The New World
@vagabond,
Depends if you call Affleck pretty. He has a face of a fresh corpse – completely lifeless, on par with Keanu (who at least has the camp factor).
For me, the herd of buffalo was the most intriguing thing in the trailer. Too many pretty people for my tastes…
Ben elektronik sigara almak istiyorum kime ulaşacağım .
Mine would be:
1. The Thin Red Line
2. Badlands
3. To the Wonder*
4. The New World
5. The Tree of Life
6. Days of Heaven
*pending second viewing.
I could honestly re-order this list in anyway and it’d be accurate, except Days of Heaven will likely remain on the bottom.
Malick ranked:
1.) Tree of Life
2.) Badlands
3.) The New World
4.) The Thin Red Line
5.) Days of Heaven
I could easily mix-match 3-5 but 1 and 2 will always remain the pinnacle of cinema for me.
@Waylin,
“a mismatch between style and theme”???
I would say the opposite. Malick’s form always suits his style. I’m curious, in which case did you not find this?
Loved Tree of Life but it only worked stylistically because the thematic and narrative structure of the movie tied into the form. I’m worried this is either going to be a rehash of Mallick’s last movie, and on some level his entire body of work, or a mismatch between style and theme. I hope I’m wrong.
“Nick Nolte’s performance in TTRL has always been the exception to me. Did Nolte find a way through or did Malick find him more interesting than the parrots singing in the trees above? Either way, I find Nolte delivers a rare performance.”
Oh yess please. THIN RED LINE is full of extraordinary performances, Nick Nolte’s being the best. That exchange between him and John Travolta never fails to send shivers down my spine!
Many thanks Steve50 for your kind words. Your words are always kind. Or they’re funny. Or they’re wise.
In regards to your observation on the perf’s in Malick films… I agree and there is probably a few ‘award’ worthy performances over the years sitting on the cutting room floor. Sean Penn is probably one of them.
Nick Nolte’s performance in TTRL has always been the exception to me. Did Nolte find a way through or did Malick find him more interesting than the parrots singing in the trees above? Either way, I find Nolte delivers a rare performance.
I love Malick, but despise his courtesans.
I won’t be missing TO THE WONDER. Fuck the critics.
Top 5(lol) Malick
1. DAYS OF HEAVEN
2. BADLANDS
3. THE TREE OF LIFE
4. THE THIN RED LINE
5. THE NEW WORLD
CCan’t wait to see this movie love malick movies
Wow!!! Dead man down only 5.3mil at the weekend box office I loved it? Bad start for WWE films I guess there hoping the call does better next weekend. I though it was a good movie 🙁
The cock tap always gets me up.
Am I the only one who has missed Mattoc?
Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring has a brand new trailer too… =) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BST3CCnP6uE
4ver a Malick fanboy, so this one is a must see. McAdams looks good and so does Bardem. And the music is really good as always
I prefer the first trailer
This just got me hooked in 😀
Beautiful traier, with awesome music and Mount St. Michel, a place I really want to visit once in my life.
I only hope this is not as disappointing as The tree of life actually was for me 🙁
David, it depends on your hardware.
For PC users, hover your cursor on Paddy’ Mulholland’s name and click
For iPad users, tap your cock on Paddy’s name or use your finger – either will work.
This will have to be an epic failure for me not to love it. After “Upstream Colour”, it’s my most anticipated of the year.
OT: though it’s far from a great film, I think the costumes in “Oz…” are probably gonna be up for awards come year’s end.
This is the first I’ve heard of Olga Kurylenko, but she looks sensational from the trailer. I wouldn’t be surprised if she snuck into the s. actress category. Bardem is always a joy to watch, he always gives his characters more complexity than they have any right to have, he’s a living legend of an actor. Knowing that he’ll be narrating a portion of the movie is reason enough for me to get excited.
That and a Criterion edition for “Badlands” is coming. This will be a great year for mallick-freaks, like me.
Hello, please look my blog and check out my film awards
http://felipe-cinema.blogspot.com/
I expect your comments
I really liked Javier Bardem in this film. Olga is also intriguing. It was a lesser Malick to me but still wonderful. I thought Django was a lesser Tarantino but still fantastic.
HHow do I get your blog?
I haven’t seen Dead Man Down, David. If I do, I’ll write a review of it on my blog.
PPaddy mullholland what did you thinkin of dead man down and the performances of Farrell an rapace I think they both deserve Oscar consideration? I’ve been wondering what you think? let me know?
Oh no, CMG, Ben Affleck is good in To the Wonder. Good enough. He’s not brilliant, but I don’t think he’s got brilliance in him. I wouldn’t rank it among his best performances, but there’s nothing wrong with it particularly. It’s definitely a better performance than his work in Argo.
A Spaniard who is a priest? Why I never!!!!!!! The real back story is how a guy who looks like Bardem chose Christ over what I have to assume every heterosexual woman in Spain throwing themselves at him.
And Paddy, I swore you wrote Affleck’s performance in TtW was at least more award-worthy than his BAFTA nominated performance in Argo. Is that just comparatively in terms of those 2 performances that TtW was better or did you think he was good in TtW?
Hey Jesus Alonso Colin Farrell has a better chance of getting a best actor nom for dead man down then Ben does for this movie!!!!
The Academy wouldn’t dare give Ben Affleck a nomination for this. Anyway, the critics won’t like it enough and it ain’t gonna make any money, so there’s no chance. Also, the role is very limited and he’s hardly quite that good in it.
And there’s no back story to justify Javier Bardem’s accent. Why do you need a back story? Maybe he’s just Mexican. There’s no back story to explain where all the other characters come from – how come one is required just for him?
It looks amazing, to my taste, but I’m worried about the accent of Bardem, hopefully there’s a back story to justify it.
I wouldn’t count out that Affleck would still get an Actor nom for this. It’ll depend on how strong this year is…
Rachel McAdams (sp) – SOLD! I’m in.
To me, […] never read the film’s synopsis before, I find it interesting that Malick’s eventually picked an ESL foreign female lead for this film as well *regardless of any other films of his*.
Small talk aside, Malick in, as well as the beautiful, talented Rachel McAdams, I am waaay more than ready to be looking forward to the film. [Another small talk: I prefer the latest — the one on top — teaser.] [Well, another small talk lol: I am also wondering how Affleck, a brilliant director, would blend in as part of Malick’s film considering, I think it’s fair to say it despite Affleck’s talent in film direction, the actor’s virtually interminably questionable thesp efforts. *To begin with, Gigli era alert*]
Not sure how Affleck is playing the same character he has before. Although I feel like he is an ensemble playing trapped in a leading man’s body, Tony Mendez and George Reeves are very different people (beyond one being a good acting job and the other being closer to sleepwalking).
On Malick, the movie are all so beautiful to look at. Do I wish it was something not as specific as love and the universe and closer to The New World and Badlands? Yes. But, whatever. I am still seeing it.
I responded completely differently to To the Wonder than many critics did. I thought it was transcendent. It gave me shivers. To those of you who are apprehensive, know that there’s at least one person who regards this as a masterpiece. You never know, you might end up loving it.
It seems less contemplative then TTOL, but still the trailer(s) reminded me of that one. Even Javier Bardem’s ruminative narration.
I’ll check it out though, I like Malick’s work. His canvases are always interesting to decipher.
I agree with christiannnw. This might be a lesser effort from Malick, but I won’t miss it because he always gives you something of value to take away with you.
Looks like he’s moving a bit into Antonioni territory with some shots reminding me of Red Desert or The Passenger.
I think Affleck looks very suited to this. Not a lot of “acting” required with Malick as he’s got other goals in mind (which is probably what pissed off Sean Penn on ToL). You know the love scenes are going to look damn good.
Terrence Malick movies (I’ve seen 2) always leave me NOT WANTING MORE….I’ll pass.
And is it me? or does Ben Afleck play the same frigging character or act the same in every frigging movie?
self-indulgent
What other entity could a film indulge? Though I do wish Terrence Malick would one day work with Oscar-winning legend of the silver screen Kate Winslet (Titanic, Revolutionary Road)… What a pairing of cinematic talent that would be!!
This trailer looks more promising than the first one, but it still looks a bit self-indulgent. However, I’ll definitely see it on opening day and will probably eat it up (and organic looking screen savers are ALWAYS preferable to visual effects-driven ballyhoo). With the exceptions of Krzysztof Kieslowski and Ingmar Bergman, I admire no other film artist to the extent I admire Terrence Malick.
