“Hollywood can’t do anything but what Hollywood does, which is hope that everybody who is doing well gets caught in some secret nightmare… Hollywood is a town that doesn’t just want you to fail, it wants you to die.”
— David Geffen, quoted in Vanity Fair, 1991

You could certainly see your skills in the article you write.
The arena hopes for even more passionate writers such as you who aren’t afraid to mention how they believe. Always go after your heart.
No doubt Geffen’s speaking from the heart. Mother Theresa probably had a better dead list.
my list has gotten shorter…. tending it isn’t worth the mental energy. Most fuck themselves anyway.
Besides, AD’s BD list is comprehensive.
Hmm. Where would you place Eric Glatt in this equation? History seems pretty linear to me in that its unlikely that humans will forget how to make the wheel, believe that the world is flat or take away voting rights from a portion of the population in the future. It may be optimistic, but things do change and improve, as Mr. Glatt may prove in the long run.
Can this be a future quote of the day??
“I hope I am [shitting] myself over the characters I play for the rest of my life. Because the day I go, ‘Oh yeah, that’s going to be a piece of pie,’ why [fucking] bother? If you do that, you do not learn,”
— Oscar-winner Kate The GREAT Winslet (The Reader, The Holiday)

So Great. Is tomorrow soon enough?
Speaking of Geffen, that PBS documentary on him was very excellent. Ambivalent on him before I watched, ended up being really fascinated by his life. Ryan, have you seen that?
Looks like the WWE universe came through Fridays box office the call 6.2million
Burt blunderstone 3.2million. the call on its way to a 18million box office yeah baby!!!!!
Someone fish Joe out of the pool!
hmm… yet he did pretty well himself, and he’s still alive, so did he prove himself wrong? or is he well protected?
Christophe,
I would say there is a difference between people wanting a person to fail and an individual’s refusal to fail.
Is David Geffen well-protected? $5 billion dollars is an adequate shield. Not many people have that shield, and even those who do still suffer incidental persistent attempts to tear them and portray them as failures.
If you’re having trouble reconciling Geffen’s quote with Geffen’s own story, then you could try comparing Geffen’s quote to a million people who aren’t David Geffen to find quite a few lives and careers that Hollywood has crushed.
