I don’t think any actors have ever captured it better than Gwyneth Paltrow and Joe Fiennes.

Sasha Stone has been around the Oscar scene since 1999. Almost everything on this website is her fault.

Saving Private Ryan should have won. Or if you’re more of a Malick fan, The Thin Red Line. But that didn’t have a chance of winning. Anyway, it’s not surprising that the Oscars went for a fluffy romantic comedy about Shakespeare. I guess they were still in a romantic phase after The English Patient and Titanic.
Agree… great script by Stoppard and great performances.
glad to see there are people who share my respect and admiration for Shakespeare in Love. maybe it shouldn’t have won the best picture (I never want my favorite movie to win that award), and maybe Paltrow shouldn’t have won (though I love her and I’m glad she did), but it is one of the most deserving best original screenplay winners. also the music is terrific.
Shakespeare In Love is superb. One of the best scripts ever
I have never figured out why it gets slammed so much. I know; it beat out SPR, but that is not a reason. I don’t hate Annie Hall because it beat out Star Wars.
I agree. I’m not sure I agree with your analogy, but I agree with the thrust of your comment. I’ve always felt it’s kind of a macho v. feminine; drama v. romantic comedy kind of thing. SPR is just taken more seriously because it’s a war film and a drama and SIL is a romantic comedy, stars Paltrow and not directed by Spielberg. The first half hour of SPR is astonishing, ground breaking film making; no doubt about it. But Shakey in Love is a whole film that works from first frame to last. The balance it achieves as described by Steve above is magical and so rarely happens. I had no problem at all with the awards Shakey won. I was a huge fan when it came out and have remained a passionate defender.
Great romance magnified by the three-layered, constantly interweaving narratives – living the relationship, writing about it, and playing it out, onstage. The creative process as a love story.
Exactly. Such a great script by Stoppard.
One of my favorite movies, and I agree. Fiennes and Paltrow had great chemistry. I remember being surprised at how swept away I was in the romance and heartbreak of the movie, even if the movie is considered a comedy.
