I’m very glad about Bruce Dern’s win. What a veteran – been around a long time and finally wins Best Actor at Cannes. I guess as an actor you just have to wait until that one right role comes along to hit pay dirt.
With all the fuss about The Great Gatsby this spring, his Tom Buchanan in Redford’s underrated film was a stand-out. I still can’t believe Fred Astaire (“The Towering Inferno”) (! ! !) was able to snag a BSA nomination that year instead of Bruce Dern for “The Great Gatsby”.
Hopefully, AMPAS has grown up a little (along with Dern) to nominate him this year.
Good to see Koreedasan’s Like Father, Like Son shine in Cannes. I was hoping for him to win Prix de la Mise en Scène/Best Director Award as well but I guess, matter-of-factly speaking, this is as good as it gets. . . . Kudos to Escalante for Best Director, though, good for him.
Looking forward to the Japanese film Like Father, Like son, the Chinese film A Touch of Sin, as well as Borgman.
In other news, Before Midnight “opened in 5 theaters grossing $273,944 and averaging $54,789. In 2004, Warner Independent debuted Before Sunset in 20 theaters, averaging $10,971. That film went on to gross $5.82 million domestically.” (Source: Deadline)
1 – Spielberg is not the only member of the jury;
2 – The jury has no obligation of awarding a movie for political reasons;
3 – The jury might have felt the movi was not great enough.
Very interesting how both the directors and the two leads of “Blue” are being awarded the prize. Since they couldn’t give a second award to it, due to the rules, the juries found a way to reward the amazing actresses that made the film what it is. Bravo to the jury, this will definitely be remembered as one of the most exciting and cinematic rewarding Cannes ever.
I think we’ll be seeing plenty more of Dern and Bejo when the year-end awards start to roll in.

Here comes the best actor Oscar for Nebraska. My gut told me that from the first still I saw….have no other idea why.

So Spielberg made sure Behind The Candelabra wins nothing to back up his studio friends who judged against a theater release???

Adele Exarchopoulos is to critics what Jennifer Lawrence was to Academy voters. Same motivation.
Happy for “Blue” and Bejo, but I wish Candelabra would have won something guess they thought it was just a tv movie.
