I think The Butler will be the black film that makes it into the Best picture race. And stop saying African Anerican, thats like calling white people European Americans. Black people have had the same rights as whites for a loonnnggg time now, why not just call them Americans?
“I see this trailer and the first thought I have is, “Damn, Elba is hot!””
I always have this thought. Elba is so hot! Damn, that man.
Harris for Best Supporting Actress?
I desperately hope so. She’s been working the circuit since the Skyfall exposure. Harvey ain’t no fool. He capitalized on her new found fame and sent her to every industry event. Doesn’t hurt too that she has a banging body and fills out those risque designer dresses quite nicely. Harris is overdue for recognition; her filmography is impressively eclectic, even more impressive because she is a black actress. Black actresses rarely find work outside archetypes.
I don’t know…I don’t care much for Elba. Maybe it’s just the movies I’ve see him in, or what, but I don’t think he’s a very good actor. Maybe this will change that.
Runtime? There’s enough material in this trailer for 4+ hours.
Can’t help but think Matthew McConaughey will win for Dallas Buyer’s Club.
Playing a real person.
Physical transformation
Character with a disease/handicap
Yes two of those things apply to Elba also but there is so much good will for McConaughey right now that I think that will put him over the top. Unless they decide to give Robert Redford a career achievement award as they did with Paul Newman in 1986.
Academy’s never cared much for Redford’s acting, plus he already has Oscar gold as a director. I doubt he’ll be a factor in this year’s race.
This look’s cheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesssseeeey as hell. Elba looks as if he gives a good performance… but much like a lot of biopics (Lincoln included) they fall way short and fail to really capture the person.
I see this trailer and the first thought I have is, “Damn, Elba is hot!”. I understand that Mandela was a ladies man and this is part of his story too, but I’m not sure if this is what the production wants me to take away from this movie right away. The message seems a bit conflicted. Yeah, trailers are tools used to put butts on seats, but that shouldn’t be my first reaction to this story. Should it? I liked the teaser better.
That’s why I don’t like trailers. They are really deceiving and can make the later experience a bit disappointing.
If I had to bet, According with the buzz, I believe Jordan is the one in the race. With the expectation for Ejiofor to make the cut.
I’m sorry, but this looks really sappy in the same vein as the recent Jackie Robinson biopic. Can’t see this making as much noise as Fruitvale Station come awards time.
hopefully, its not the case. But I agree, which is why I placed Elba behind Ejiofor and Jordan.
Think that Ejiofor will definitely be nominated.. then Jordan, and Elba.. along with Tom Hanks and Steve Carell.. Whitaker will not be nominated from the looks of the film..The Butler seems very manipulative compared to the other films.
It’s been reported that Foxcatcher is likely being pushed back to 2014 because Sony is just so damn swamped with quality contenders. This irks me, because the storyline sounds much more intriguing than Bennett Miller’s previous films.
(Unless you meant Carell in The Way Way Back, that is. Ha!)
it was for Foxcatcher. If that’s truly the case, I am deeply disappointed since that was one of the top 5 films that I was most excited to see.
This looks intense and good…and quite timely….
Since I’d read so much about Michael Jordan’s performance in Fruitvale Station I had very high expectations from him. While he is very very handsome guy (sorry but I had to say that..he is very handsome:), his performance did not meet my expectations (could be writing or directing or just my high expectations). By the way I was/still am more impressed with O.Spencer’s performance. I can’t forget some of her scenes. I wouldnt be surprised if she got a nod…
And then next month, we will get to see Forest Whitaker playing the Butler. and then we have C.Ejiofor in 12 tears a Slave in December..
The reason I am saying all this is that I do not think that AMPAS would nominate 4 (or even 3) African Americans for the Best Actor in the same year, while 2 could be more plausible if all performances get good reviews and enough push. If it goes down to one, then assuming he is really good in it, I would give Idris Elba an edge over others simply because he plays a legend, an icon, a symbol who also happens to be very sick….If it is two, I dont know who would get the second actor to get a nod (Whitaker?).
Regardless of the final outcome, I am glad to see that we have four potentially good performances by African American actors in the same year. At least one or even two of them could get nominations…
Idris Elba and Chiwetel Ejiofor aren’t african american.
LOL Americans. All black actors are not African-Americans you know. Black people exist outside of America. Shocking right? I know. Idris and Chiwetel are British.
So which Black actor gets weeded out of Oscar contention? You know there’s an unofficial quota at work, so there’s no way more than 2 are getting in. I say it looks like Michael B. Jordan and Chiwetel, with Idris a close third and Forest way down.
All four will be nominated, and then a white actor in middlebrow oscar bait will win.
Tom Hanks…again. lol
