The line-up of the 70th Venice International Film Festival (28th August > 7th September) has been announced. The official selection includes: Venezia 70, Out of Competition, Orizzonti, and Venice Classics. The autonomous and parallel sections include the International Critics’ Week, and the Giornate degli Autori – Venice Days.

The world premiere of Gravity will screen in 3D on August 28th in the Sala Grande of the Palazzo del Cinema at the Lido, following the opening ceremony.  In celebration of the 70th edition of the Venice Film Festival, the Biennale di Venezia has created the special project, Venezia 70 – Future Reloaded. 70 movie directors from all over the world have been invited to make a short film lasting between 60 and 90 seconds.

    It’s still kind of bugging me that 12 YEARS A SLAVE isn’t here. Upon seeing the film, did the distributors calculate that McQueen had gone too American in his treatment of racial themes on film? And therefore was doomed to a far from “universal acclaim” from the Euro critics? Could they have feared that deflation?


    -I’m over the moon about the inclusion of David Gordon Green’s JOE, I don’t think anyone was expecting that. Could the Nick Cage be in line for some recognition? I won’t count on it but it’d be a great surprise.

    -As always, I’m pleased with the return of star Zac Efron to the Lido, a prestigious film festival regular now, and deservedly so.

    -I had no idea about this Errol Morris doc, but I hope it’s THE FOG OF WAR caliber

    -Other than that, excited about PHILOMENA, as I already said, I hope it’s as great as THE QUEEN, and the Actress is as good as she was in NOTES ON A SCANDAL -such underrated film- I obviously don’t even know what the plot is; just going by a hunch and those recent pix that I didn’t expect to like as much as I did.

    Correct me if I’m wrong: I thought JPN was the most common or even official initial used for both Japan and Japanese…. : ) (By the way, isn’t the word “Jap” a racial slur?)

    Anyway, I have not seen the Japanese remake of Unforgiven yet, but having seen the original version, as well as […] familiar with most cast members’ performances in this new edition, I couldn’t help but finding the two main roles notably miscast: Ken WATANABE (playing Eastwood’s William Munny equivalent in this version) and the equally — if not more — talented Ko-ichi SATO (Hackman’s Sheriff equivalent; also featured for the time being as the main figure in the top-page picture prior to clicking) should have switched the role….
    I guess, while casting, they’ve also had international market factored in as well, not to mention Watanabe himself, post-Oscar nom, understandably might possibly tend to be more careful with his options (reading: probably preferring only protagonist roles in case of domestic productions).

    I’m quite relatively new when it comes to international films (at AD level; not an ordinary one); so, by default I’m rooting for Hayao MIYAZAKI film/anime Kaze Tachinu (from Japan).

    Weeks ago I said that Steve McQueen movie will Venice… did the organization saw “12 Years as A Slave”? Maybe the movie studio attached the work to other cinema event?

    Other thing. Is quite disapointing to sse a biopic of a man so importante as Lech Walesa, directed by a cinema genius, an artist dedicated to epics and History (with capital “H”) as Andrzej Wadja, out of the competition.

    RE: Forestieri – Perhaps Venice turned down the latest McQueen because they care about art more than empty style, which his “Shame” was a particularly laughable example: the dreary psychologizing of sex (& demonization of gay sex) pegs him as an insufferable hype artist a la von Trier – & anyone who thought “Fog of War” was anything other than a feature-length apologia for a war criminal is truly blinkered.
