“Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2”
“The Croods”
“Despicable Me 2”
“Epic”
“Ernest and Celestine”
“The Fake”
“Free Birds“
“Frozen”
“Khumba”
“The Legend of Sarila”
“A Letter to Momo”
“Monsters University”
“O Apóstolo”
“Planes”
“Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie – Rebellion”
“Rio: 2096 A Story of Love and Fury”
“The Smurfs 2”
“Turbo””
“The Wind Rises”
“Several of the films have not yet had their required Los Angeles qualifying runs. Submitted features must fulfill the theatrical release requirements and comply with all of the category’s other qualifying rules before they can advance in the voting process. At least eight eligible animated features must be theatrically released in Los Angeles County within the calendar year for this category to be activated.
Films submitted in the Animated Feature Film category may also qualify for Academy Awards in other categories, including Best Picture, provided they meet the requirements for those categories.”
Why isn’t “Gravity” on that list? It’s essentially an animation movie…
Will win: “The Wind rises” Point!
Here’s an interesting question: How many of these movies center around a female(s) character(s)?
I count at least two or three.
I would personally appreciate a new rule where ONLY original animated films should be up for the nomination. I find animated sequels a lazy excuse in the movie industry. Yes, some sequels are quite good (Toy Story 2&3 were great), but animated sequels diminish the excitement and competition/honor of this category.
Too bad, Nijntje de Film (Miffy the Movie) isn’t on the list 😉

Watch out for “O Apostolo”… it’s a so different offering, than in such a weak year in this cathegory, it can easily sneak in, if screeners are seen.
I think Miyazaki is the frontrunner, then Frozen, The Croods, Epic and Ernest and Celestine OR O Apostolo.
I honestly think they’ll avoid sequels, prequels and spin-offs.
THE WIND RISES!!!
Haven’t even seen it yet, but I don’t care. The Wind Rises ftw.
Also Ernest & Celestine YES
Ernest et Celestine
The Wind Rises
Frozen
Methinks they should leave it at that, the rest of the field is pretty weak.
I’d hedge by bets as such:
1. “Frozen”
2. “Monsters University”
3. “The Wind Rises”
4. “Ernest and Celestine”
5. “Epic”
6. “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2”
7. “The Croods”
8. “O Apóstolo”
9. “Despicable Me 2”
10. “A Letter to Momo”
There are two things that surprise me about this list.
First, I am disappointed that Wolf Children was not submitted considering it had a qualifying run at the Town Center 5 in Encino.
Second, I cannot believe Madoka Magica: Rebellion was submitted when the previous two movies that came out last year were not entered. Don’t get me wrong. Madoka Magica is absolutely fantastic, and anyone who likes anime should go and see it.
The director of Wolf Children is sometimes referred to as the next Miyazaki.

Also, I think you will be hard pressed to find another animated film where a girl points a gun at her head.

Still, it is nice to see three anime submitted for the Oscars this year.
Final 5?
Monsters University
Frozen
The Croods
The Wind Rises
Cloudy 2
Alt: Ernest And Celestine
ineligible?
Where is Metegol?…
As of now ERNEST AND CELESTINE should win Best Animated Feature
Caveat: I haven’t seen FRONZEN, which has impressed but If I like I end up like it more or less like I did TANGLED then it shouldn’t win but down for a nom. Also haven’t seen Miyasaki’s THE WIND RISES which has underwhelmed many, but I don’t trust critics when it comes to this guy.
I’ve seen all the big American releases so far, and not excited about anything. I guess I’d be happy with MEATBALLS 2 getting nominated.
Let’s get a campaign going for Planes, just to fuck with people.
