What you said made a great deal of sense. But, what about this? what if you were to write a killer post title? I mean, I don’t wish to tell you how to run your blog, but suppose you added something to possibly grab folk’s attention? I mean Awards Daily

David!!! Congratulations on Brie’s win. You are indeed her biggest champion here.
David, I’m right there with Ryan. You’ve been her biggest champion and honestly people weren’t really talking about her until you kept bringing her up. I at least give you the credit for bringing in the Larson traffic.
It’s not uncommon for the best breakthrough actor/actress to be nominated at the Oscars, so good news for Jordan.
Thanks Ryan I know some people on here think I’m annoying but I just think her performance will get her an Oscar nomination!!!!!
It’s great that the Gothams seemed intent on spreading the wealth and not just going with the obvious (12 Years, Blanchett), but it bears next to no significance oscar-wise. Isn’t it like five people sitting in a room deciding whatever they feel compelled to award?
Still, I feel glad on behalf of David. His incessant campaigning for Larson reaped its reward!
I love it Larson beats Blanchett head to head Larson has momentum she’s going to get an Oscar nomination!!!!!
DAVID!
truly your loyalty and support the past several weeks made Brie Larson’s win even sweeter for a lot of us here.
Alexi,
you remind me of the latest Little Caesar’s Pizza commercial.

Take that Cate Blanchett!!
So, where is Cate Blanchett’s sweeping wins, Blanchett fans? She can’t even take down Brie! Congrats to Brie!
If you click on my name it will take you to my blog. Wot a NITE!
I was there tonight. You can read my blog about the evening from the P.O.V. of the Press Room. I can tell you the Fox Searchlight peeps were in SHOCK!
Ah yes. That makes more sense. Again, thanks Ryan.
Oh, okay. Thanks Ryan. 🙂
for italics just substitute em inside the triangular brackets
for bold insert b inside those brackets
be sure the final set of brackets closes out the HTML code with a slash: /em and /b and /blockquote
Nope. Dang!
Al Robinson, you did it right! On my screen I can see you quoted my reply in a blockquote.
Cool! 🙂 Thanks Ryan. (Hopefully it worked)
unlikely hood,
Hopefully david is out celebrating Brie’s victory. Have a cold one for me too david. Congrats man! 🙂
Liking Antoinette tonight.
Waiting for david’s victory lap. (Brie Larson)
Moreover, for those critics outside the US who have seen 12 Years a Slave, it may not carry the same emotional resonance.
^^ Europeans are fairly liberal and have a better understanding of American history than Americans do.
[How do you make “quotes”?}
SallyinChicago I’m not talking about understanding American history. I’m talking about having an emotional connection to American history.
And I seriously doubt very many film critics have a weak grasp of American history. This isn’t about the relative intelligence of the general population of America and Europe, is it?
American critics who write for a living prolly got some brains. Meybe even brains as big as Euro critics got.

I love a good curveball just as much as the rest, but I don’t think we should get ahead of ourselves. The Gothams, historically, mean squat. It’s lovely that Larson, McC, Cogler, and Jordan get to win some awards, but it’s the Gothams. Let’s just remember that.
12YaS not appearing on the top 10s that have appeared so far this year is nothing because it hasn’t been widely seen outside the US yet.
Last year, the Gothams awarded my favorite movie of the year its highest honor. Look how far that got Moonrise Kingdom.
This week, much will be revealed. This though? This means nothing.

Furthermore, additionally, on top of all that, and to boot: Nobody ever looks at the Sight&Sound and Cahiers du Cinema Top 10 lists and expects them to have any relation or impact on Oscars Best Picture nominees. Those 2 list never tell us anything about the Oscars, right?
In fact, when The Social Network was named #1 by Sight&Sound in 2010… rather that cheering, fans of TSN with Oscar hopes should have been saying “ruh-roh”
jorge,
…and — winning? Will it be Sandra Bullock or Judi Dench? Or someone else??
this is the beginning of cate blanchett losing everything…
Don’t get me wrong, 12 Years a Slave is a “Stone Cold Classic”, but I have 12 Years a Slave fatigue. I want to see a new movie come up and overtake it.
My 2 favorites to do just that are:
Inside Llewyn Davis & The Wolf of Wall Street.
What a surprise? If 12 Years loses tomorrow again – well well. By the end if the week we’ll know but still hoping for Wolf of Wall Street. It’s my NGNG pick all the way.
Yep, the Coens are the best.
Cannot WAIT to see “Inside Llewyn Davis.”
filmfan, you’re welcome. 🙂
I’m hoping that the reason why 12 Years a Slave lost Feature Film is just because Inside Llewyn Davis is plain old “just better”. But, I’ve been in the Coens camp for a long time now. Plus, they’re from my hometown of Minneapolis.
Thanks for the clarification, Al.
That may explain its omission from the Empire list — but it was also shut out at the Gotham Awards. Not that any of that means anything at all. Just interesting.
@John
You’re friends with Stevie Wonder and Andrea Bocelli?
*waits*
“Excellent Top 10.
Where is “12 Years a Slave” in the Empire list? Some heads are going to explode around here.”
filmfan,
The reason why Empire Magazine left 12 Years a Slave off their top list is because in the UK, it won’t be released until January 10, 2014, making it obviously not eligible to make their list for 2013.
Also, I also have spoken to some black friends of mine who say that they just “cant” see 12YAS.
Was pulling for Oscar Isaac.
Not that it means much, but …
12YAS didnt make the top 10 of Sight and Sound.
It missed a Production Design nomination with the Satellite Awards.
It was just shut-out at the Gothams.
Interesting start.
Sounds like I made the right decision to switch over to the Hobbit premiere. What did Lee Daniels do?
Anyone know the phase out detail? :/ On the bright side: Packed Christmas.
I mean I’m under the assumption I will love INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS because…it’s the Coens.
AHHH – nice surprise.
Forget this award show!! I hate it.
Nice choices. Take note, BFCAA. I’d say lovely first half, then that happened. Really bad production, but the choices they made are more than respectable so I forgive them.
As for the Best Pic — I never heard/seen half the pictures nominated. Aint them Bodies Saints? Huh?
I have to write this about 12 Years – A LOT of my African Amer. friends won’t see it because of the subject. They just won’t go see it….but they will see some benign stuff like BEST MAN.
I hope 12 Years makes it to the Oscars, because I think Brad Pitt deserves an Oscar for SOMETHING.
Not that this award means anything, BUT 12 Years could be the Benjamin Buttons(?) of the Oscars.
Not sure 12 Years a Slave thought they would start award season like this….lol
I’m just tryin to remove the veil in front of my eyes, to discover my place in the world
lovely speech tho
Sorry “worse” not worth.
Forest is worth than Daniels. Just accept the award and be gone, and I love the man. But this will not get him an Academy award nomination.
Never knew how much I’d appreciate the professional polish of The Golden Globes.
As entertainment, this show is baaaaad. The incidental music sounds like something you’d here at awards show during the Mad Men era.
The Worst award show i have seen!!
And poor Forest who is very dignified and quiet is taking it without a smile. Wrong person to give homage to such a great actor. Oprah would have been better.
This is not a very entertaining show. It wasn’t produced or scripted was it?
Is he gone, yet? Is it safe?
Lee Daniels meltdown … … …
is Lee Daniels high?
Daniels is really drunk isn’t he?
Ryan,
I muted it
I haven’t seen BLUE CAPRICE, but the framing was appalling in that clip. I don’t care if it’s hand-held or on a shopping cart. ALL IS LOST wasn’t far behind.
Jared Leto and McConaughey are both funny guys but that wasn’t good. Bad idea.
One the other hand, Morgan Spurlock, not funny and even a worse idea.
So apparently “12 Years” is not going to sweep.
Wow that’s a surprise — Matt McC.
Chantal Akerman are you shitting me? Seeing Richard Linklater up on a podium warms my heart. He’s not a Soderbergh sort of public speaker, but undoubtedly one of the foremost filmmakers we’ve had in this country for the last 2 decades or so.
Since my last comment was wildly unclear, I meant because Larson doesn’t have as much buzz as Blanchett and similarly, Isaac would be getting in over more expected winners
Jim, It could be that enough voters at the Gothams feel a deeper allegiance to movies that are truly independent. Movies that have to dig to find financing — movies that have to struggle to get made, beg to be seen.
Brie Larson! Could this mean (I hope) that Oscar Isaac has a chance? Would love to see him break into the Oscar race for real.
I’d love it so so much if more of the locks we’ve been assuming for weeks made way to embrace some of the fantastic fresh young voices we’ve seen unleashed this year.
She just started Sally!
I liked her in WHITE and she just informed us Linklater likes SCENES FROM A MARRIAGE (which duh, but still cool!)
Julie Delphy is an object standing next to Ethan. Was she supposed to be talking to?
Brie Larson yay. (wait, is this the kind of award that would have gone to Blanchett should she have confirmed attendance?)
Ryan Coogler is sexy
LOL That’s Tara and her lawyer
can’t take that CONCUSSION movie seriously bwahaha
Excellent Top 10.
Where is “12 Years a Slave” in the Empire list? Some heads are going to explode around here.
Not that anyone cares around these parts, but they seem to have great taste.
Empire Magazine Top 10 Of 2013
1. Gravity
2. Captain Phillips
3. Rush
4. Mud
5. Lincoln
6. Stoker
7. Iron Man 3
8. Before Midnight
9. The Great Beauty
10. Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa
I mean their #1, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 8 choices.
Only 6 Categories? They really do not bother.
should win:
Best Picture: BEFORE MIDNIGHT
Best Actor: N/A (Not really excited about anyone there. I guess I would wish for Isaac, but I haven’t seen the film so I don’t know)
Best Actress: Shailene Woodley – THE ESPECTACULAR NOW or Brie Larson SHORT TERM 12
Breakthrough Actor: Dane DeHaan (Haven’t seen that movie, but I like him and his body of work and since it’s “breakthrough”)
Breakthrough Director: Ryan Coogler – FRUITVALE STATION
Documentary: THE ACT OF KILLING
12 Years a Slave should sweep. A great film.
Go, Before Midnight!
The Hobbit premiere is streaming tonight too. There’s so much to watch. 🙂 Awards Season is here for realz. *boogies*
