The Best Scene in Frozen, and Best Song Frontrunner Let it Go

Love this. Movie.

Lock to win. The song, that is. Though frankly, I quite enjoyed the film and imagine it’ll stay firmly in my top 10 even after I see most of the legit contenders.

The song took a listen to grow on me, but especially in context, it works wonders as a storytelling device and a piece of character development.

I hope they let Idina Menzel (and not Demi Lovato, thank you very much) perform this in full at the Oscars.

The rest of the songs are inferior, but one or two more could definitely be nominated in the way that Disney songs always are. Josh Gad’s snowman song “In Summer” is so clever conceptually and lyrically that I imagine them including it.

Love this movie, love the songs, love Idina, and love my hometown girl Kristen! Plus this movie has the best animated dress ever, whoever designed that ice sparkle dress deserves an award, and the ice castle is so beautiful.

They’ve been on a nice roll for the past few years. I’ve seen the film twice already, and it works beautifully on every (animation, story and musical) level. It’s a wonderful scene. I like how the character is fully accepting and embracing her nature. It feels liberating.

I haven’t seen “Frozen” yet, but I’m not incredibly inspired by this song. Does it strike anyone else as derivative of (or at the very least, strongly inspired by) “Defying Gravity” from “Wicked”? Substitute ability to manipulate snow/ice for ability to make inanimate objects fly…

Lyrics to the openings of both songs:

    Something has changed within me
    Something is not the same
I’m through with playing by the rules
    Of someone else’s game
    Too late for second-guessing
Too late to go back to sleep
It’s time to trust my instincts
    Close my eyes and leap!

    It’s time to try
    Defying gravity
    I think I’ll try
    Defying gravity
And you can’t pull me down!

The snow glows white on the mountain tonight
Not a footprint to be seen
A kingdom of isolation, and it looks like I’m the Queen
The wind is howling like this swirling storm inside
Couldn’t keep it in; Heaven knows I’ve tried

Don’t let them in, don’t let them see
Be the good girl you always have to be
Conceal, don’t feel, don’t let them know
    Well now they know

Let it go, let it go
Can’t hold it back any more
Let it go, let it go
Turn away and slam the door
    I don’t care
    What they’re going to say
Let the storm rage on, the cold never bothered me anyway

Apparently I’m the only one who prefers “For the First Time in Forever.” Pretty much all the songs are solid, though.

Lopez has proven himself to be a clever, smart songwriter with BOOK OF MORMON and AVENUE Q…this is a great addition to his songbook. it’s rare that an original movie musical clicks the way this has. not since Mr. Menken.

@purgurly, they are definitely similar thematically, lyrically, even melodically. But then Idina Menzel is playing both of these similar characters. And the songwriters said they tailored the song to her voice. “Defying Gravity” was an immediate classic, but this one is still great and deserves an Oscar.

    ^^ Yes

This song will be grossly and unfairly overlooked because no one practically saw the movie Winnie Mandela. But at the end, the Diane Warren song, “Would you bleed for love” is so beautiful and strongly sung by Jennifer Hudson, you simply have to sit and listen:

There’s another song, from the Oz movie that Mariah Carey sang, but because the song didn’t go to the top of the charts it won’t be considered.

The lyrics are good, and so is the performance, but the melody to me is just ho hum – nothing special.
