It is sad that Fruitvale Station, when mentioned, is only in First Film or Breakthrough Performances categories. This film is so underrated. 🙁
These same results over and over and over and over again, sometimes flip flopped, sometimes with the occassional Dern or Franco.
There were so many fabulous performances this year.
Agreed! And glad you mentioned Paulina Garcia. She was phenomenal. Such a natural performance, I loved it. I truly hope that the NSFC will shake things up a bit, but I doubt they will. They’ll probably stick to the same bland boring choices as the others.
Zach, agreed. I’ve been saying for a couple years at least that people want the critics awards to honor the best of the best, and in some cases they do. But then they want someone else thrown in the mix to “make it exciting” and it’s total bullshit. That’s basically wanting a critic to nix who he thinks is actually the best just to appease a handful of people who surf the web. If they honor American Hustle or 12 Years a Slave or Her every damn time then deal with it. It shouldn’t impact how you feel about a movie. Honestly though, this year is hella exciting for me. I know for a fact best picture is down to 12 Years a Slave and American Hustle with a dark horse in Her, best director is between McQueen and Cuaron and best actor is down to Ejiofor and McConaughey with Dern a dark horse. It’s one of my favorite years for films.
Spike Jonze is the favorite to win the Original Screenplay Oscar!! He keeps getting the awards.

Usually our buddy rufussondheim reminds us of this, but this a a great site to keep a tally of what’s happening with regards to critics’ lists:

rufus – where are you?
Maybe it’s a pretty obvious year for the winners and so why resent critics for reaching a consensus? This year it doesn’t feel like they’re trying to shove a single film down our throats or shape the race; the frontrunners are just frontrunners for a reason.
Where is DiCaprio, where is Paulina Garcia, where is Harrison Ford, where is Sarah Paulson, or a Margo Martindale. People need to be stumpin for them and the like.
Im throwing shade at the critics results, not the performances in question. Theyre all deserving. Just sayin. Many were deserving this year. So many.
Borrrrrrring. Ejiofor and McConaughey.
Leto and Fassbender.
Nyongo and Lawrence.
Seriously???
