And Before Midnight picks up another screenplay win. Still not understanding how anyone can think it isn’t a frontrunner in that category!
saw TWAS … it was a great film … but, American Hustle gets my vote for BP
I meant the poster way above who thinks no one hates Woodley. I mean, she was good in Descendants, but I didn’t think she deserved a nomination. Talk about overexposure, whereas JLaw is undeniably effortlessly charming and charismatic. And at least Hunger Games doesn’t feel like an exact copycat of other franchises like Harry Potter and Twilight, whereas this Woodley one looks like a wannabe HG.
To the poster above,I hate Shailene Woodley. She doesn’t have the charisma to merit all these parts.
JLaw is terrific and frankly more impressive to me than Lupita this year. Lupita was good and showy, but in terms of acting, it was all done much better (just less luridly) in Roots. Don’t begrudge the Hustle / JLaw fans. And I was adamant she shouldn’t win last year.
Did Davis really win this because they think it’s the best or because they wanted to give it a push?
@Jude Law: Regarding Shailene Woodley: Oh, yes they do hate Woodley and often is referred to as “Jennifer Lawrence-Lite”(interestingly enough by the same annoying hipster critics that give Lawrence a hard time…but really they are still in the minority where both women are concerned)…that she doesn’t have the same acting chops, charisma, is not as versatile, etc., Also, with Woodley starring in Divergent, she has bcome an even bigger presence on the internet but still does not have the respect/love in the industry that Jennifer Lawrence has. I mean, Woodley received a GG nomination for Descendants but…it ended right there.
Jennifer Lawrence received awards acclaim all the way to an Academy Award nomination for Winter’s Bone and is STILL going strong. I can’t think of any other young actress as acclaimed or successful right…damn, what a resume!. I’m curious to see if Woodley will get the same kind of acclaim for Divergent that Lawrence has received for The Hunger Games. I’m also hard pressed to find to find anyone who can figure out what the film is about based on the trailers. I’m not trying to give Woodley a hard time but the fact is, she is nowhere near the kind of acclaim/respect that Jennifer Lawrence receives.
Wow…this was a lot longer than I intended! (LOL!)…anyway, I agree, Lawrence was fantastic in American Hustle and yeah, I’d be pleased as punch if she won.
It’s not fair to compare NSFC to AMPAS. NSFC has far better taste.
It’s really a shame that this film might get completely neglected by the Academy. I haven’t watched it yet myself, but virtually everyone I’ve been talking to gave it massively positive reviews. I am sincerely hoping that things might turn around in the last moment but no one knows…
And btw, I do find Jennifer Lawrence an incredibly gifted actress. She deserves an Oscar and I wouldn’t be too disappointed to see her win again this year.
Between the wins for James Franco and Jennifer Lawrence, and the lack of documentaries, animations and non-English language features in their selections, this is surely one of the worst NSFC slates in recent times.
^Yes, it would be unwise to think at this stage ILD would make the BP lineup without WGA and PGA nods. Dallas is way ahead.
I would like to think this is a big time boost oscar-wise for the Coens, but sadly it isn’t.
glimmer is here!
And – whether she deserves or not, J Law is a real contender for supporting actress Oscar this year.
I love Jennifer Lawrence, but her performance in American Hustle is severely overrated. Lupita delivers the best performance of the frontrunners, with Julia Roberts in second place.
unlikely hood,
I know, right?
But, it’s the speed of the race. 1 minute your out, the next your in, the next after that?…. I guess we’ll find out.
wwe films, well one of the reasons wwe has kane in suit and mask less is because in ‘see no evil 2’ you’ll get see his face a plenty. so if he’s without a mask now. it’s easier to explain. ok, that wasn’t your question… 😉
the suit and tie/well, like your favorite actors kane can take on different roles. he doesn’t want to be typecasted. 😉
maybe ‘see no evil 2’ will hit during the annual pre summer blockbuster/ dump 200 horror films to the market mania.
a.d.’s kane isn’t taking the wwe kane bait/jokes. i tried to do this months months ago when i joked about liking (wwe’s) kane’s phone call with halle berry and directed it to our kane.
*ha ha*
chriswpg, don’t worry about it. i’m sure not much ‘spring breakers’ related is making too many of the fest/critic type lists a.d. posts.(yes, here and there.but sparse indeed)
and here it only won one. i mean come on/ that’s not close to ultra acclaim or award domination. it doesn’t even have any other or noms.
but still i’ll take ‘spring breakers’ over the usual “oscar bait” stuff.
so you see chriswpg, ‘spring breakers’ fans have more to complain about than you do. 😉
Inside Llewyn Davis sweeps National Society of Film Critics Awards
Oscar Flashforward: Inside Llewyn Davis Not being Nominated for Best Picture?
– now that’s a homepage that’s fun to open
(and still no edit button?)
I listened to three of our local radio critics tonight list their 20 best films, and not one had WOWS, The Butler, Fruitvale Station or 12 Years on the List. They all had Her and Gravity as top 2. Maybe the above films were just a bit much for them to take?
how would we ever know what to think about movies without local radio critics
Anybody who saw 12 Years a Slave and those two powerful scenes that Lupita had….how can anyone say that Jennifer Lawrence was a better supporting actress? I hope the Academy gets it right.
Completely happy for Inside Llewyn Davis and Cate Blanchett!
Kane
When is your new movie “See No evil 2” coming out? Why does the wwe have you wearing a suit and tie now your the big red machine
I don’t get the love for American Hustle whatsoever. It is a complete mess of a film- same goes for Wolf of Wall Street, yet I find the latter better.
Buford, I don’t think the NSFC formed just so they can predict the Oscars. More often than not they happen to predict the best films, or near best, of the year. The Oscars can’t say that much.
another big mistake for the academy to gave the oscar to lawrence last year, instead of giving her this year where she actually deserves it , i mean she was good in SLP, but riva should have won, now they wont give i her another one, at least the next 5 or 10 years.
in best actress im hoping for adele to make it
about shaileene she is havin good choices with her roles , and def she will get a nomination soon
I mean look, no one hates Shailene Woodley. If Lawrence is more reserved and if she does every indie movie out there, she would be more loved. I don’t know if it’s logically right, but think that way. Put Lawrence on Woodley’s place and vice versa.
If Lawrence wasn’t an internet celebrity, she would be considered as more of an actress than a celebrity. I mean, if she’s with Streep’s generation, she would be taken more seriously as an actress. She’s not just a celebrity, she’s loved by the internet. It causes overexposure that honestly annoys some of the bloggers/critics. It makes them hate everything she does.
Winter’s Bone, Silver Linings Playbook, and American Hustle are all totally different performances but played all three like a very seasoned actress. She deserved all the acclaim, but of course, there are better performances especially last year. Riva should have won that. But who cares, Lawrence’s performance in SLP is very good. In my opinion, I’m okay with it.
Winter’s Bone, Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle – SOLID BODY OF WORK FOR A VERY YOUNG AGE OF 23.
This time, I think she deserves to win for “American Hustle” PERIOD.
Oscar Isaac is the breakout performer of 2013 in my opinion. I’m so happy to see him getting some genuine recognition here, because I’m afraid he’s probably out Oscar time.
Ejiofor, Dern, Hanks and McConaughey are locks. There are like seven great performances fighting out for that last spot.
DBibby, I agree. The former.
The Academy loves the Coens! They gave “True Grit” tons of nominations for god’s sake, and it’s not even that great a movie (even Best Director!). *Actors* love the Coens (who cares if the WGA are idiots and thought Dallas Buyers was a better script). Inside Llewyn Davis missed out on SAG, but it’s a tough year to compete for that. Go Coens go!
PHILLIP GREEN ….I agree ; I watched it , or should I say , suffered through it last night …I mean, talk about an over rated movie …it was very similar to Silver linings , just ”much ado about nothing”, with a strained and bogus ending …what a disappointment
That movie aint going to win BP, that’s for sure ,and none of it’s actors are going to win an Oscar either …..those folks who like this movie must be drinking the Kool Aid and must be out of their minds if they think J Law deserves another Oscar …there was very little in the movie even to laugh about
GRADE C+
I watched Spring Breakers many months ago and am puzzled by the acclaim? I mean wtf lol
NSFC are an utterly useless award for predicting the Oscar race ; they have only managed to pick the BP winner 5 times in 40 years;they only managed to predict D Lewis last year and sound like they will be about as successful this year
NSFC are an interesting bunch. As a best picture precursor, I’m not sure whether this pushes if into a Guild-snubbed but critics-loved best pic slot (like last year’s NFSC winner Amour), or Guild- and Academy-snubbed pic (like NFSC’s 2011 winner Melancholia). I’m gonna guess the former.
when they moved to the second round of voting, proxy votes were eliminated and only voters present in the room could participate.
Interesting Robert A. So the Llewyn Davis voters were the ones passionate enough to show up? Sounds about right to me.
According to online reports, 12 Years a Slave was ahead in the first round of voting, with a three way tie for second between American Hustle, Gravity, and Her. Inside Llewyn Davis was in fifth place. But when they moved to the second round of voting, proxy votes were eliminated and only voters present in the room could participate. 17 members out of 45 members voted in the subsequent rounds, and it was then Inside Llewyn Davis surged ahead.
The only winners from major categories who won on the first round with the proxy votes were Blanchett and Lawrence.
Some of these groups have such odd voting methods. Regardless of how the voting went down, it produced a very worthy winner.
wonderful honors for Llewyn. They stand on their own.
always glad to see big awards spread around to deserving films. NSFC is way more than a precursor.
Good to see “Hide your smiling faces” getting some recognition, even if is bad that it hasn’t found a distribution yet!
There! dammit!
And good on Oscar Isaac, too. He gives a great performance in a very tough role and would be my choice for Best Actor.
Great timing for your article Sasha. They must have been reading it while they waited for the voting to start. Is there a way to email-bomb AMPAS?
Seems like Jennifer Lawrence is building up a little more steam. Sweet Lupita was amazing, but Jennifer just did it for me this year.
How can ANYONE say American Hustle is better than 12YAS for Heaven’s sake!!!
Look at the final ratio yielded by Blanchett to Exarchopoulos [triple-checking the spelling], as well as that by JLaw [Hustle, seen] to another strong contender Ms. Nyong’o from the 12 Years fame.
They really meant it when they gave it to both ladies. Good for you, girls.
And this thread definitely makes ’dem days for all Llewyn Davis’ supporters around here in the wake of the previous snubs.
It’s the first time the Coens win a NSFC-award for best picture or director! It was about time…
Worked! 🙂
Yay cool. No pain, Bryce. You’re right. I was just trying to get the basics online asap.
Don’t mean to be a pain, but you could have gone with “NSFC crowns Best Picture INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS” or “INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIDS Sweeps the NSFC Awards” Or something at your discretion. Anyways. Great winners all around. No doubt. Jennifer Lawrence would be wise to step up her camping game. People liked that stuff with her.
I’ll adjust the headline when i’m back at desk. Posted this on the road from mobile interface.
I guess i can see if I can enhance the headline without wrecking the site.
Larson not even a runner up Franco wins best supporting
The second best film of the year behind 12 Years a slave won Bp and Bd hopefully this will help its Oscar changes. Also glad wolf was not a factor in any catagory.
