Hey, almost missed this.
Larry’s right – I did the King’s Peach back then. This year I’m playing it a little bit more like Chris Price. The trouble is I hate to cook. But I force myself…sort of.
Jorge I had a friend do a trash bag last year! I dressed like Leo in Django. Another pal was Lincoln. This year I’m giving everyone a break, but would love it if some of my fellow Americans do the Hustle.
For me the decorations are a major part of it…I’ll finish tweeting those tomorrow @smithrowsey. I already tweeted my world-beating “Gravity” one the other day. Not to brag, but Ryan Adams favorited it. So there.
I get about 20 people here in the Bay Area, CA. Anyone local, ping me and come on over!
The menu this year:
Philomena’s Tea (Tea when they walk in the door. Irish Whiskey if they want a kick – or need to lose the baby. Did I mention my friends have a sick sense of humor? Which reminds me…)
12 Years a Slave’s White-Deviled Eggs
The Wolf of Wall Street’s Pigs in a Blanket
Zero-Gravity MREs (if you’ve never had an MRE – it’s what soldiers and astronauts eat – they are amazing, and even better at a party where people can trade courses)
Dallas Buyers Club “Meds” (I have this plastic washer-holder which looks like a large version of someone’s MTWThF pill-holder – hence I’m stocking it with movie candy, nuts, wasabi peas, what have you)
Nebraska/American Hustle corn/popcorn (The day the nominations were announced, I went to fanatics.com and cleaned them out of University of Nebraska merch that had “Huskers” written in this cool font – I figured I’d cross out some of them to read “Hustlers” and so I have. Goes well with the huge American flag I put up with “Hustle” written on it and pics of the stars of the movie in the stars. Bit of a food cheat, but it works. Bowls of popcorn and boiled corn coming out of its husks. And next to that…)
Her – Bowl of melted butter. (I have this device that I don’t need and looks enough like the main one in Her – I like its HAL-9000-like eye. Anyway it stands upright in a pastel-green small thermos, you can’t see its bottom, but a wire is popping up from the thermos and “connecting” (taped) to the bottom of a green bowl of melted butter. I taped a tiny version of the film’s poster to one side of the device and on it I wrote “a voice like melted but-” and it says “her”. Lame but ok. Asian fusion from the movie would have killed me.)
Captain Phillips – THE CAKE IS THE MAERSK ALABAMA. You read that right. (It’s red velvet, though who cares.) Really, check my twitpics tomorrow. Have your cake just before we eat it too.
I like Chris Price’s menu – and also Larry’s idea.
No, no, you are doing it all wrong! You’re supposed to make bad puns out of the titles of the nominated films and actors that relate to food. Let’s try some out, shall we?
* 12 Years a Slaw (coleslaw)
* American Cheese Hustle
* Dallas Buyers Club Sandwich
* Meryl Strip Steak
* June Squab
OK these are pretty lame, but I bet someone out there can come up with some better ones! Try it out! You can make a whole menu.

”I guess a lot of people our age first started watching right around Titanic”
There are a few of us here who were on it.
” I guess a lot of people our age first started watching right around Titanic”
My first serious one was 1990. Then in 1995 they didn’t nominate anything I liked. That’s when I become superior.
“You wouldn’t happen to also be a devilishly handsome attorney would you ?”
Far from it. Attorney, that is.
I’ll be enjoying a Gravity inspired Air Biscuit.
I want to see some fantasy menus – this is always my favorite thread – something like “Floating Islands” or screwdrivers made with Tang (Gravity), anything with Cool Whip (12 YAS), Chili Con Tranny (Dallas Buyers Club, and yes I know it’s not PC), Fancy Feast cat food (Inside Llewyn Davis), Frozen Daquiris (Frozen).
That sort of thing.
No Emma Thompson, no Oscars!
A spoonful of sugar and off we go to bed…
Bryce- No not Argentinian was just there on holiday with friends-they booked our flights without checking with me first, super annoying. Only buenos aires but yeah it is awesome! Need to go back not on Oscar weekend 🙂
Julian- yeah that is weird–You wouldn’t happen to also be a devilishly handsome attorney would you ? In seriousness, I guess a lot of people our age first started watching right around Titanic
“Julian- I’ve also been watching since the titanic year when I was a junior as well!
I haven’t missed but in 2006 (coincidentally the last time the best picture race was a close call and the last time Ellen hosted!) I was in Argentina traveling and I had to ask a pub to play it for me and had to watch it with dubbing voice overs! That was a disaster”
That’s almost creepy, my friend!;)
We started watching the SAME year, we were BOTH juniors in high school and we both missed one year because we were in the middle of nowhere in ARGENTINA!
That’s…WOW!
Will be doing African cuisine for 12 YAS; Moroccan chicken, Ethiopian breads, South African baked pudding.
Decorative stars, glitter, statuettes, stargazer lillies. For Gravity (my other BP pic), have decorative astronaut dangling in space & glass star bowl. It will be a small dinner party of around 10.
This is my 20th Oscar party I’m hosting this year. I have 7 people coming with one maybe (she’s nine months pregnant so I’m thinking no)
I am doing a finger food buffet and two of my friends are bringing dessert. I’m so excited about Sunday!
MENU-
Hot artichoke, crab, and jalapeño dip with pita chips
Sundried tomato and provolone bread with smoked turkey
Radish and celery salad in endive cups
White Sangria
Red wine
Strawberry water
Brownies
Cake pops
Champagne cocktails
Coffee
Tea
Snack mix
Baileys
“I was in Argentina traveling and I had to ask a pub to play it for me and had to watch it with dubbing voice overs! That was a disaster”
Where’d you go?! Wasn’t it great? Are you Argentinean?
I’m really anti a lot of those social media apps but I’ll have my friends Instagram :).

Going to an Oscar “potluck” party.
I’m making a popular dish I’ve made many times: Oriental Cucumber and Mango Salad
Dice Up:
Japanese cucumbers
Mangos
1 small hot green chili pepper (seeds removed)
Bunch garlic stems
Two garlic cloves sliced
Bunch of scallions
Citrus salad dressing
1 tsp sugar
1 tbs rice vinegar
All ingredients to taste.
Serve in two bowls (an Oscar cut in half and hollowed).
@Simone
Honestly, BBQ chicken pizza and cookies is probably what I will actually be having… 😀
Well, watching the ceremony from the UK I won’t be eating Before Midnight. I may just make myself a Dallas Buyers Club Sandwich, maybe fill it with Bacon, Leto and Tomato. Or a main course of Squibb Raviolli. For dessert I will be having Jennifer Lawrence.
Jorge, sounds fun!:)
I have seen the show with a good friend of mine every year since we were juniors in high school (the year Titanic won). We still get together every year, even though here in Denmark it’s at night (from about 2.am onwards). We either skip work or call in claiming to have caught the flu or something Monday morning (I’m freelance, so I don’t have to worry about anything but my conscience, which is bad enough when you’re 34…)
I only missed the show in 2012 when I was spending 18 months in Buenos Aires doing community work for the Danish minority in Argentina (as well as doing plenty of freelance writing). I was hiking in Patagonia at the time, so I spent the whole night in a freezing tent unable to sleep thinking about what was going on 10,000 miles north…
But usually, we meet at around noon, watching some DVDs with reference to the show, and then we go watch a movie and eat out at some American steakhouse or something: Trust me, only that one time a year!:) So not much of a menu, really, just a lot of grease…
Damn Jorge, you need to instagram some pics for bragging rights. Have fun! 🙂
I have a BBQ chicken Whole Foods pizza, and some girl scout cookies.
I’m poor but proud! 😀
I’ll be hosting an Oscar Party at a local family-owned restaurant/gastropub here in Phoenix (a marketing client of mine). Red carpet, awesome drink menu inspired by the Best Picture nominees, raffle, and the show on about 10 big flat screens… This is the second year. Last year was a blast – about 100 people showed up over the course of the night. I can’t wait!
We do the same thing we do each year. Cook one dish for each BP nominee (with three contracted out to guests since the expansion), buy Oscar BP cookies from here http://elenis.com/store/product/best-picture/?cat=578 – we always keep the cookie for the BP winner (going back to Hurt Locker when she started the cookies) so this year we probably won’t let people eat several of them as the race is close.
We wear costumes – last year trash bag, this year NASA shirts.
We do a ballot contest with prizes for the top two scores.
And for the first time this year we are adding Oscar bingo- hopefully it’s not too much.
In all about 10-12 people in our medium sized NYC apt.
All are welcome! 🙂
Same every year, we order Indian food and get wine drunk!
I’ll end up doing Pizza. I wish I knew people who were down for an Oscar party.
