The books main character was 12 years old and had pretty much no action or conflict, other than boys own revelation. The movie however looks very different, just trying to be part of the dystopian teen craze.
the book is an interesting morality tale, but very small scale. the movie looks to open it up in ways that distort the intent of the book–in locale, time period, theme, intent, etc. it could be good, but the preview is disorienting to one who liked the book a lot.
Between this, Divergent and The Maze Runner…I feel like I’ll have YA dystopian diarrhea…Thank you Hunger Games for jump-starting this trend. Out of the newbies, I have to say The Maze Runner is the only one that looks impressive to me.
Who cares about the movie, all we want to know here is whether Bridges and Streep have any scenes together? That would be the only reason I would watch this… and even then I probably would just look for the scene on YouTube a year later.
Hunter, looks great as a matter of fact 🙂
“We can now add Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges to that list (and Patricia Clarkson for The Maze Runner).”
The Maze Runner doesn’t even look bad, though. There’s no way to know if it’s going to succeed or not.
This book is one of the most critically acclaimed YA novels ever written. Don’t give up hope yet.
Looks boring and terrible! Add Taylor Swift and Katie Holmes with Jeff Bridges monotone sleepy voice, this is a big NO thanks from me
Is Meryl channeling Anjelica Huston or something?
I actually love Meryl’s hair and give her at least credits for trying different genres than just “normal” dramas (or comedies).
She’s definitely on an intersting path this year. We’ll see where it will take her.
Not to awards, but really, she has won so much, does it matter? I’ll watch everything with her in it.
“Clear and Present Danger (1994) are all right.”
Clear and Present Danger (1994) is all right.

I am also looking forward to Cameron Crowe and Woody Allen’s directorial efforts.
I’ve checked The Giver’s director Phillip Noyce’s CV. One of the most recent feature films directed by the Australian film director is 2010 flick “Salt” (my grade: D+ or so), one of the more overrated movies, in my opinion. Clear and Present Danger (1994) are all right. The Bone Collector (my grade: C or so) is more or less fun, with Washington and Jolie co-starring. And then he’s got The Quite American (2002) on the list, too.
My point, however, is that I’m not sure what prompted Meryl Streep to join the #club. Jeff Bridges did Tron a few years back in 2010, the True Grit year; so, recently he was not new to obvious #mainstream flicks.
I understand that it’s just a trailer and that you can’t judge a book by its cover or a film, sorry, I mean, a movie, by its trailer . . . . But sometimes you could possibly get the whole idea and somewhat feel (part of) the project having watched Hollywood films for long; it might not be precise in terms of perception vs reality to come, but as far as the clip goes and to be blunt, it fails to interest me.
However, [back to Meryl Streep] I’m quite interested to learn more of what was indeed behind Streep’s psyche and her option to have become part of the project . . . . [edited by myself]
Twilight was popular cos the books are extremely popular.
The Hunger Games is popular cos the books are extremely popular.
Divergent will be popular cos the books are extremely popular.
Emma Thompson, Eileen Atkins, Viola Davis, Margo Martindale, Jeremy Irons, William Hurt, Frances Fisher, CCH Pounder and Jared Harris – all among the esteemed actors who have lately sacrificed their integrity by starring in a YA adaptation that has flopped because the books are not extremely popular. We can now add Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges to that list (and Patricia Clarkson for The Maze Runner).
Meryl Streep and her White wig. oh nooo 🙂 but movie looks good.
