Foxcatcher will get a looksee at Cannes in a couple of weeks but then hit Oscar season right in prime time. I’m getting the feeling it will likely make the rounds, perhaps Telluride and Toronto, before being released. It couldn’t be in more prime territory for Best Picture/Best Actor consideration.

Sony Pictures Classics announced today that they will release Bennett Miller’s FOXCATCHER in the United States on November 14. The film will premiere in the In Competition Section at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival.

Directed by Bennett Miller (MONEYBALL, COPOTE), FOXCATCHER tells the gripping, true story of Olympic Wrestling Champion brothers Mark Schultz (Tatum) and Dave Schultz (Ruffalo) and their relationship with the eccentric John du Pont (Carell), heir to the du Pont Chemical fortune that led to murder.

The film is produced by Megan Ellison under her company Annapurna Pictures, as well as, Miller, Jon Kilik, and Anthony Bregman. Miller’s prestigious cast includes Steve Carell, Channing Tatum, Mark Ruffalo, Vanessa Redgrave, Sienna Miller, and Anthony Michael Hall. The film was written by E. Max Frye (SOMETHING WILD, AMOS & ANDREW) and Dan Futterman (CAPOTE), the Cinematographer is Greig Fraser (ZERO DARK THIRTY), and the Production Designer is Jess Gonchor (NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, MONEYBALL, TRUE GRIT, CAPOTE).

    Sweet!!! November 14, 2014. I can’t wait.

This being written by Futterman may give hope that Miller will return to his slow burning, character study style, like the one we saw in Capote. I like Moneyball, I really do, but it isn’t an intense drama deeply focused on it’s characters and their evolving relations. It’s more like man vs. the system that comes in all shapes and sizes. It’s about embracing change as a general idea and the Billy Beane streak is just a backstory. I’m pretty sure we won’t see that type of filmmaking in “Foxcatcher” and I can also see a couple of similarities to “Capote”. In a way it’s also a journey to unveil the mystery behing a murder, but not a “who dunnit” mystery. It might be about what makes us stride for success, how far are we ready to go, what’s the price to pay. I’m expecting some powerful stuff and I have a feeling I won’t be disappointed.

    Can we please not? Thanks.

Who’s the lead anyway? Is it Steve Carrell?

  • Al Robinson

Oh, whoops! Steve spells it Carell. Not Carrell.

I’m glad I didn’t grow up with a long difficult name to learn to spell, like: Steve Wojciechowski or Carl Yastrzemski

Or my childhood friend: Krzewinski (last name)

  • Bryce Forestieri

Or a few names were all been trying to pronounce for the last couple years:

    Quvenzhane Wallis
    Chiwetel Ejiofor
    Lupita Nyong’o

I’m only trying to stick up for your relationships with Jack O’Connell, Ton Hardy, and Benedict Cumberbatch, Oscar Issac, Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy. Don’t let your eyes stray away from your other husbands.

My roommate is madly in love with Channing Tatum, so she’ll definitely want to see this movie. Her favorite Channing Tatum movie is Magic Mike. She’s also in love with Joe Mauer. We like to joke he’s her “future ex-husband”. She doesn’t care that he’s married with twins. But of course, the joking is all in good fun.

What kind of reputation have made for myself? I didn’t even know Tatum was the lead in this; was talking Carell.

I have to be honest. I’ve never been involved with anyone in the MLB so zero bragging rights.

I think Steve Carell is the lead in Foxcatcher. No worries about not knowing any major leaguers. 🙂
