The kind of intensity we feel from J.K. Simmons’ performance is often a magnet for gold. “Whiplash” follows Andrew (Teller), a first-year college student as he begins his quest to become the core drummer of the top jazz orchestra in the country. Under the direction of a prestigious but borderline abusive instructor named Fletcher (J.K. Simmons), Andrew would do anything to become a famous musician. His commitment is put to the ultimate test when the unrelenting and eccentric band professor all but drives him to madness. Fletcher’s extreme teaching methods rattle Andrew’s faith in drumming…and in himself. In the end, the struggle is only worthwhile if Andrew is really the one-in-a-million talent that Fletcher believes him to be.

By the end of that trailer, I had a single tear….wow.

Love J.K. Simmons as usual, but I think Miles Teller is one of the best young actors (along with DeHaan) out there! And awfully cute too 🙂

J.K. Simmons’ performance looks promising, as usual. So does the male protagonist’s, more or less.

Looks like a solid good time to me.

Love the drum roll semi-climax in the end (for a change, instead of the more formulaic, strategically instigating score); it suits the story as well.

Miles Teller first caught my attention in Rabbithole. His performance in that film, where he does so much with so little, really stirred something in me. It has definitely made me want to see more of his work. As for JK Simmons, I think this is the film we (and he) have been waiting for–I feel like the roles he’s had up to now have never truly matched the greatness that he always seems to contain, but has never had the chance to unleash. Whiplash looks like it was made for him.

So…it’s basically Foxcatcher for jazz drumming?
