The Oscar shortlist just released — kind of shocking to see no Into the Woods here. I thought it would be a shoo-in and perhaps the winner. They will pick three of these:
“The Amazing Spider-Man 2”
“Foxcatcher”
“The Grand Budapest Hotel”
“Guardians of the Galaxy”
“Maleficent”
“Noah”
“The Theory of Everything”
Guardians of the galaxy.
The grand budapest hotel
Maleficent
Grand Budapest Hotel
Guardians of the Galaxy
Noah
spoiler: Maleficent
dark horse: Foxcatcher
winner: Grand Budapest Hotel, most likely, but I think Guardians of the Galaxy deserves it more.
I want to second Zach’s comment: what would they be nominating Theory of Evetything for? I loved the film but I don’t remember anything special about the make-up?
I would guess Foxcatcher, Guardians and Grand Budapest get in, Guardians to win it.
“Snowpiercer” and “Exodus: Gods and Kings” had great makeup and hair.
And I, too, thought “Into the Woods” would have won this category. I remember a few years back they failed to nominate Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland” for Best Makeup, which is the film which should have won this category that year. I don’t even think it made the short list. Still can’t understand that one. I think this branch may be made up of people who buddy around together . . . and they just nominate each other. I may be wrong, but it seems that way sometimes.
“Foxcatcher”? When did sweat become makeup?
Well, duh a lot of worthy nominees have been snubbed. It’s the Oscar for Best Makeup & Hairstyling. What do you expect, common sense and reason?
Been saying Guardians for the win since it hit theaters…though I can easily see Theory of Everything or Grand Budapest Hotel winning. From what I saw of the Into the Woods trailer (admittedly not the whole movie) some elements just looked overdone or theatrical, which may have been the point. Depp’s wolf just didn’t look impressive to me. But I still thought the academy would go for it for at least a nomination.
Just realized, no Mr. Turner, either.
Period hairstyles/beards/old age makeup/Dorothy Atkinsons face ailment.
Surprised.
Great to see Into the Woods get snubbed. It’s the sort of film that seems to be made only to qualify for a category like this.
Grand Budapest is picking up so much steam in the time of year when one needs it the most – and I absolutely LOVE it. I – and many of us – thought it will be mostly forgotten, but now I see both BP and BD happening. Of course this is due to movies like Interstellar and Unbroken (and now so obviously Into the Woods) making room, too. Makeup and Hairstyling could be one of TGBH’s few wins.
Shocked that Into the Woods didn’t get in. It was being touted as the clear favorite by most pundits… which only goes to show they can’t predict everyrhing.
I’m shocked that ”Into the Woods” isn’t here. You’d think that Meryl Streep’s witch and Johnny Depp’s Wolf would’ve been naturals. …
I like how the Makeup & Hairstyling recognize achievement, regardless of the critical reception or box office of the picture. Regardless of what you thought of ”Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa” or ”The Lone Ranger,” it was great to see them get Oscar-nominated. Naturally, ”Dallas Buyers Club” was gonna win because it was a Best Picture nominee and more Academy voters saw it. (Ditto for ”Les Miserables” and ”Benjamin Button.”)
No The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies or X-Men: Days of Future Past either. Huh!
What makeup would they be nominating for Theory? I thought most of Hawking’s changing appearance was due to Redmayne’s topnotch acting. And one of the worst parts of the film was how Felicity Jones didn’t appear to have aged despite having those adult children.
Only thing I know is worthy here is Budapest, even though Swinton was only in it for like 30 seconds. And Jolie did look great in Maleficent; a cosmetic company was selling the makeup based on her look in the movie.
Knight of Cups trailer is OUT 🙂

1st there was Cate Blanchett in a Woody Allen film = legendary result
Now there’s Cate Blanchett in a Terrence Malick film
=> life is wonderful!
No Dawn of the Planet of the Apes? Was everything just CGI then?
Sad for Into The Woods =/
Foxcatcher can win easily now.
Please PLEASE no Foxcatcher. Carell’s prosthetic looked totally ridiculous.
The Theory of Everything and Grant Budapest Hotel are shoo-ins and then they’ll go for a fantasy — probably Guardians of the Galaxy although I did love Maleficent’s cheekbones.
I think Theory is winning this a la Dallas Buyers Club, which virtually no one was predicting for a nomination before this shortlist was released.Foxcatcher and Guardians are my bets for the other nominations.
Anyway, I sometimes think this branch is making an even harder push than the song branch for the title of weirdest category. Into the Woods omission, last year’s Rush and The Butler’s omissions… Can’t understand those choices.
Most impressive to me were
Grand Budapest
Guardians
Maleficent
But God knows what AMPAS will do
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Maleficent
Foxcatcher
I thought Russell Crowe’s hair was beautiful in NOAH. But isn’t that just the way it grows out of his head? Just looking over the movies I’ve seen for this year there wasn’t a lot of obvious hair and makeup. What happened there?
