The best thing that’s about to happen is that the Oscar nominations will at last come out. A few questions remain – and everything feels completely wide open. At least it does to me! Either way, here is your chance to predict the unthinkable. Please do not predict things people are mostly considering, like no Gone Girl for Best Pic, etc. Or Selma for Best Pic. Up to three.
Here are my No Guts, No Glory Nominations Edition
1. Renee Russo gets in for Supporting
2. Mr. Turner inexplicably lands in Picture, Director and Actor
3. Unbroken gets in for picture
Zach Swann (not me) was wise
My NGNG’s in the order I think they could happen.
1) Tilda Swinton for Snowpiercer (Supporting Actress)
2) Damien Chanzelle for Whiplash (Director)
3) After all the hype of how it was picking up pace, Nightcrawler gets zero nominations.
4) Miles Teller for Whiplash (Best Actor)
5) Interstellar for Best Picture
6) American Sniper is completely snubbed except in technical categories.
7) Marion Cotillard bumps someone from Best Actress with Two Days One Night
8) Guardians Of The Galaxy for Best Picture
9) Emma Stone snubbed for Birdman
10) No acting nominations for Foxcatcher.
I wish I could hit Like on some of these comments
Ida Best Picture
Cotillard Best Actress
Two Days, One Night Best Picture
and since Cotillard isn’t really NGNG, Mike Leigh Best Director
I forgot:
4) Rosewater for adapted screenplay.
After reading some of these I’m surprised there is an NGNG that says
BOYHOOD for Best Picture
Michael Keaton for Best Actor
Neil Patrick Harris for Host
1) Lorelei Linklater for Supporting Actress
2) Lego Movie for Sound Editing
3) Under the Skin for Cinematography
(BTW, while surprising, it would not be ‘inexplicable’ if Mr. Turner got those noms, it’s a great movie. What would be inexplicable would be St. Vincent getting a bunch of noms.)
NGNG 2015:
1. A Most Violent Year gets Oscar Isaac in Lead Actor (with Keaton, Cumberbatch, Fiennes, Carell, Redmayne snub), Jessica Chastain in Supporting, Bradford Young in Cinematography and J.C. Chandor in Original Screenplay
2. Interstellar snubbed in all categories especially in Visual Effects, Sound Editing, and Sound Mixing where Captain America: The Winter Soldier replaces it
3. Big Eyes gets in Lead fir Amy Adams (with Moore, Pike, Aniston, Witherspoon), Bruno Delbonnel in Cinematography, Rich Heinrichs in Production Design
Possible NGNG scenarios I see happening:
– Felicity Jones not nominated (replaced by Amy Adams)
– Meryl Streep not nominated (replaced by Rene Russo)
– Interstellar in BP (with 6 other nominations below-the-line)
– Guardians of the Galaxy with 6 below-the-line nominations, no BP though (new record in this era)
– 0 nominations for Selma
– Inherent Vice in Adapted Screenplay (The Theory of Everything out)
– Steve Carell in Supporting Actor (Robert Duvall out)
– Thomas Newman/The Judge nominated for Score
NGNG:
1. Both Tony Revolori and Riz Ahmed crack into best supporting actor (and replaces Ruffalo and Duvall)
2. Both Leviathan and Force Majeure misses out in best foreign language (sadly)
3. Nightcrawler gets 8 nominations overall
1. Original Screenplay: Calvary
2. Song: Virunga
3. Foreign L.: Corn Island
Still Alice for Picture (I’m actually gonna do it in Screenplay)
Tony Revlori for Supporting Actor
American Sniper gets only sound nominations
A lot above like Russo are NOT NGNG! Maybe I’ll give you Unbroken, though I’m sticking it at 10th myself.
Cooper over Oyelowo
Russo over Knightley
No Boyhood in Best Editing
Btw, Boyhood has nothing to do in Best Editing
NGNG – Interstellar gets in best pic
Adriana Barraza – Best Supporting Actress for CAKE
Chris Pine – Best Supporting Actor for INTO THE WOODS
Emily Blunt – Best Actress for INTO THE WOODS
* Ralph Fiennes for Best Actor
* Timothy Spall for Best Actor
* No major nominations for Selma
Wild for Best Picture
Sienna Miller for supporting Actress
NGNG
– No one is predicting Foxcatcher for picture, so I think it gets in.
– Damien Chazelle gets in for Best Director (I don’t consider it a NGNG)
– Steve Carell gets in for Best Supporting Actor
– Rene Russo and Jessica Chastain both land in Best Supporting Actress, while Meryl Streep gets left out
NGNG
My gag reflex kicks in when I keep hearing AMERICAN SNIPER.
(Just kidding… We all know that’s a virtual certainty.)
NGNG (In honor of INHERENT VICE, which deserves to be a major contender but will likely get the shaft)
Joaquin Phoenix lands the 5th spot in Best Actor over Carell, Gylennhaal, and Cooper
Brolin takes a the fifth spot in Supporting Actor
Katherine Waterston in, Chastain out.
1. Lego Movie for Best Original Screenplay
2. Opportunity (from Annie) for Best Original Song
3. Josh Brolin for Best Supporting Actor
JDH – nice Kim Dickens shout out; she and Coons were the highlight for me.
Selma gets most nominations with Picture, Director, Actor, Screenplay, Editing, Cinematography, Costume Design, Song, and Score.
1. Selma leads the nominations and receives 3 acting nominations.
2. Nightcrawler’s sole nomination is for cinematography
3. Unbroken shut out
Chris Nolan – Best Director
Naomi Watts – Best Supporting
Tom Wilkinson – Best Supporting
the only one I haven’t seen anyone else mention is “lost stars” for best song (from begin again).
i’m also big on revolori (Budapest) or ahmed (nightcrawler) for s.actor…….and PLEASE NOT DUVALL.
russo all the way!!! agata kulesza (ida) too!!!
