After Hitfix (stupidly) lost Kris Tapley and In Contention, there was some speculation as to where he would land. Now, Variety reports that Kris has joined the publication as co-editor:
Tapley will help lead the publication’s awards coverage, providing daily, on-the-spot coverage under the In Contention banner on Variety.com as well as a weekly report in the magazine with fresh content during the film awards season. His comprehensive coverage will also include awards predictions.
He will work closely with Variety awards editor Tim Gray and deputy awards editor Jenelle Riley and will report directly to Claudia Eller, co-editor-in-chief. Tapley will start August 24, kicking off his job by attending and helping cover the Telluride Film Festival as the awards season gets under way.
“We are so excited that Kris is joining our great awards team,” said Eller. “I have always been a huge fan of his strong voice and astute analysis of the industry’s closely watched awards race.”
Variety publisher Michelle Sobrino said she is thrilled that Tapley’s valuable contributions will further bolster the dominant role that Variety plays in the awards season.
“Over the past few years, Kris Tapley and In Contention have provided Awards Season pros and passionate observers with sharp, lively analysis that’s matched by his digital savvy. The combination is irresistible for anyone who loves movies,” said Sobrino.
Congratulations to Kris!
Haha, you know it Robin. 😉
Thanks Kane, I will do that, and yep, I like our group. I’m happy to be in the circle. 🙂
Al, if you have the time go look back at Kris’ Top 10 Shots he puts out every year. If you want something incredibly insightful then look no further. But you’ve got a great list of people you follow! We all seem like a loyal group of readers.
Why comment cos it is a comments section,i like Sasha and visit everyday but Nat has more of the otherside of the movie world i’m looking for,he’s is not so Oscar focused except when the season really kicks off,his prediction charts are beautiful too,it is very actress/pop culure focused,,there is great interaction and he remembers who u are even if your not a writer/blooger/or an insider,a gr8 blooger.
@Al
You’re reading some great writers there Al. 😀
Tapley’s film writing covering the awards season is usually quite insightful – the Variety gig is an interesting acquisition. I too have been following his work for years and years, casually. I will say his actual written words on the page are all I am interested in though, and try not to engage with him on Twitter. On that subject, he followed me on Twitter only recently – for about an hour. Strange.
Truth be told, I’ve never read anything by Kris Tapley. I follow him on Twitter, but that’s about it. But since he’s joining Variety, I might have to start. Otherwise, besides reading Sasha, Ryan, and Jazz’s writing here at AD, I read Robin Write’s, Paddy Mulholland’s and Asif Khan’s postings.
Mark, why comment at all?
Marko, this article is about Kris is making the move. Not Guy.
I hope Lodge knows better by now and won’t let himself be pulled into it… He was the only good thing on that site.
My loyalty is with Nat over at TheFilmExperience.
Very happy for Kris. A well-deserved opportunity to be a force in film awards. I am confident he will use his new position for good ends.
My two faves to follow are Sasha (and Ryan) and Kris. Very happy for him. Cant wait to see all the coverage on this site and Variety this season!!!
Variety has crap awards coverage, and awful review write-ups that they like to position as “the first review of…” Their Twitter is embarrassing.
Maybe Kris will help, but then again I was not a fan of what was happening at HitFix either so ok
Happy news indeed!
Good for Kris, I couldn’t be happier. There’s nothing better than to see great writers actually get rewarded for their talents.
Finally fired from Hitfix. Good for Hitfix.
Mr E: No, Variety’s website is paywall-free!
Are we going to have to pay to follow his coverage now?
Sasha is my go-to gal, but I occasionally read Tapley and Harris too. All the rest are psychopaths, racists, insufferable and/or deeply corrupt. Glad for this reunion of sorts with Guy Lodge.
Congrats Kris! Great to have you back in the film blog conversation. AND…anyone else psyched that Kris and Guy are REUNITED!?!?!!?!
Sasha and Kris are the only 2 I’ve followed daily for many, many years now. Good for him. After the click-baityness Hitfix has become I’m glad he’s going to a place like this, which I hope does some good with him. Kris and Guy together again, well at Variety at least.
