A feature film based on the documentary “Our Brand Is Crisis”, which focuses on the use of American political campaign strategies in South America.
Directed by David Gordon Green and written by Peter Straughan, who adapted Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy in 2011 and this year all six episodes of Wolf Hall.
Ryan – take a look at my comment again. I don’t think I said what you thought I was implying, thus what you reacted to. My point is that it is a drama, some of the words are funny, and should not be for what this film is about, and these funny quips stand out, and in not a good way. It minimizes the overall film. Take a look at Argo, there were some light moments but that was to release stress of a very tense situation and it flowed. Based on what I saw in the the trailer, those funny lines had no business being in the shooting script or make it past post, and did not flow other to be funny lines in a film. However, I’m reserving my ultimate opinion to after I see the film. I’ve seen trailers on films that I’ve liked and the film hasn’t panned out and vice versa. If you want, check back with me after I see the film.
Susyn, I know I was probably thrown off track by what I felt was rough wording when you wrote
“it’s Sandra Bullock trying to be funny in a drama,”
— as if a problem you perceive is her fault. But if I’ve mistakenly made too much of that, sorry.
I only wanted to try to absolve Sandra Bullock of the responsibility for the words on the page that she is paid to say in the tone that I feel the director has directed her to say them.
If the writer and director didn’t want the delivery she gave them, then they would’ve done retakes to extract all the funny out of it.
Also, the trailer plays up the comedic elements and makes me smile.
IMDb categorizes this movie as Comedy|Drama, in that order.
I was not expecting a comedy but since to me it truly looks fairy fun, I’m fine with it.
I heard about this and saw Pete Hammond’s comments. However, it’s Sandra Bullock trying to be funny in a drama.
It worked for Blind Side but not for this, I’m afraid. Film in general looks good and I will see it. I noticed someone compared to Wag The Dog. Wag The Dog wasn’t funny, it was a drama. So is this. Again, trying to put humor where it doesn’t belong. But,
I’ll keep an open mind to after I see it.
Wag The Dog wasn’t funny
You should see the version I saw. It was breezily absurdist.
I’m ordinarily not a huge fan of turning true stories into satire when the lives of real people hang in the balance. That was deal-breaker for me when somebody decided the death of thousands of Afghan civilians and thousands of western troops would make a great backdrop for a hot-tub screwball comedy in Charlie Wilson’s War — despite the weak sobering final 2 minutes which were weakened far weaker than the original ending Sorkin wrote, after skittish interfering Texas republicans got hold of it.
But there are undeniable black comedy elements to be found and lessons to be learned from situations where oafish international strategies end up making bad situations worse with the klutzy meddling of superpowers.
Susyn, I’m truly glad to have you here in the comments. But I have to take issue with the idea that Sandra Bullock took a dramatic screenplay and tried to make it funny. Hearing these lines, it’s clear they were written to be funny. No director is going to let any actress grab a drama away from him and try to turn into something funnier than the writer and director always intended.
hf Sandra. nhf white people saving the world. hf Peter Straughan. cbhf (could be here for) David Gordon Green, depending on my/his mood.
hf Sandra. nhf white people saving the world.
but I think the movie intends to depict the ridiculous folly of white people who think they can save the world, yes?
Variety says hf Sandra:
“As played by Sandra Bullock, Our Brand Is Crisis political spin doctor Jane Bodine is easily one of the best female roles of the last 10 years.”
As far as the trailer goes, it looks so-so to me. No disrespect towards Bullock in general but I need to see it first — to believe it. (Thanks, though, for embedding it.)
the full-length CAROL trailer is out 🙂

GoOnNow, thanks!
I think this looks pretty ho hum. I’m just not a fan of Bullock overall.
Yes to this. No to Demolition.
I’ll be the shallow guy here but Sandra Bullock is looking absolutely hot in it.
Too bad, Jesse James!
Ouch… more “America Saves The World” stories? Sadly, AMPAS will probably embrace it. Grievous days lie ahead.
Sandy has her Oscar, let her rest.
I’m not too happy with the trailer, but this might be the kind of film that doesn’t cut down into a trailer very well. It reminds me of The Men Who Stare at Goats (made by some of the same people) in that it’s not really “funny” enough to be sold as a satire (the biggest laugh moment in the trailer falls pretty flat for me), but it’s got too much humor to be sold as a drama, either.
Bullock looks pretty good (though I think the year will be a little too strong to get her a nomination), but I’m just not seeing this as a major contender. I think this will be something like this year’s Kill the Messenger–politically admirable, but dramatically and cinematically underwhelming.
Two time academy award winner, that will be Sandra bullock next headline
I don’t know. Didn’t do it for me (trailer, Bullock, etc). Hopefully that means I’ll be more than pleasantly surprised when I see it.
Oh, that’s who wrote it? Well, interest level just went up a bit more.
I’m all in for a smart, sharp and fun political satire. Sandy looks fantastic in this!
hmmm. Looks to have the same smart-ass shimmer as Argo.
Looks WAG THE DOG-y. We shall see.
Is it just me, or has a CCR song become a cliche for trailers? Still great though, so I’m not complaining.
That poor Llama! I hope it was okay.
This movie looks great, and I’m excited for it come Halloween.
Yeah, Sandra Bullock looks like she’s primed for another Oscar nomination.
What do you all think about the film itself for a possible Best Picture nomination?
ready or not here comes sandy!!!!
Well, I can certainly believe Hammond’s words on Bullock. She looks great in this.
A few weeks ago Pete Hammond (Deadline) wrote a piece about this year’s Best Actress race and this is what he had to say about Bullock whose film apparently he had already seen : “Sandra Bullock has what may well be her best ever performance in Toronto-bound Our Brand Is Crisis in which she plays the hell out of a burned-out political consultant advising on a Bolivian presidential campaign. She could blindside the competition again. “
Also quacks.
quacks? you want quacks?

Well, this actually looks really interesting!
Looks right, sounds right, feels right. The trailer shows off a screenplay that hits all the right notes, yeah?
