the Truth synopsis as posted on the TIFF website; it’s really a Cate Blanchett movie
“Based on Mapes’ 2005 memoir, Truth and Duty, this directorial debut from screenwriter James Vanderbilt is as much a political thriller in the vein of All the President’s Men as it is an investigative narrative about dirty tricks in the US political system. Mary (Cate Blanchett) is a no-nonsense news reporter convinced that Bush was among many privileged young men who used their connections to avoid combat. Following a tip regarding evidence about Bush, she assembles her team, which includes a journalism professor (Elisabeth Moss, also appearing at the Festival in High-Rise), an unemployed researcher (Topher Grace), and a retired Marine colonel (Dennis Quaid). They persistently chase down leads and witnesses in an attempt to build a bulletproof case that 60 Minutes can air.
Vanderbilt slowly turns up the heat as Mary, supported fully by Rather (Robert Redford), confirms more and more of her hunches. Driving up against deadline, the team rushes frantically to double-check the facts, but airing the story just starts a war with the powers that be, who do all they can to discredit them. Taut and smart, Truth is a thrilling piece of filmmaking about journalism and politics in the tawdry age of counter-messaging.”
Looks absolutely gorgeous. Cant WAIT to see this.
Paddy,
This is true, although I think that might have been a bit of a fluke, like when Affleck wasn’t nominated for Argo.
In any case, it may not be the unshakable deciding factor it once was, but if it happens, I would consider its chances of winning that much greater.

JamDenTel, remember, the argument that an Editing nomination is essential for a film to win Best Picture at the Oscars was debunked last year when Birdman won. Also, since the score is by Carter Burwell, I’d keep any Original Score hopes as low as possible. He’s never been nominated, though there are some (in other words, me) who aren’t terribly bothered by that. But yeh, multiple nominations look extremely likely. And extremely deserved.
I ADORE this trailer. The narration, the cinematography, the music, the design. Fucking ADORE.
It doesn’t always happen, but the Academy can vote differently than what the studios campaign for…could end up being like The Reader, which was initially campaigning Winslet in the supporting category and the Academy decided it was a lead performance…..
Breathtakingly gorgeous trailer. Todd Haynes is a genius of a filmmaker and both ladies deserve to win. Man, I wish we could see that. Both Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara in a tie for Lead Actress. Obviously out of the question, the thought of it though sounds fantastic. I think they should give Cate her third Oscar in either category. I doubt though she’ll go supporting for this.
Blanchett’s voice!!! <3
Bellissima!
This trailer is so much better and more exciting!
So thrilled!
This looks stunning and Blanchett and Mara shine. It looks totally like the Best Picture winner.
I’ll keep it on my radar.
From the look of it, I don’t see how Mara and Blanchett aren’t co-leads.
Let’s predict a little:
Picture – almost certain (for a nom)
Director – likely
Adapted Screenplay – almost certain
Actress (Blanchett) – almost certain
(Supporting) Actress (Mara) – almost certain
Cinematography – very likely
Editing – possible
Production Design – very likely bordering on almost certain
Costume Design – almost certain
Original Score – very likely
So 5 nominations at least, and quite possibly 9 or 10. If it gets in for Editing, look out.
This trailer is just stunning. I cannot wait until this is released!
This looks so gorgeous. Why can’t this be out in theaters already?
