The trailer for Ava DuVernay’s 13th has been released by Netflix. The documentary which was produced and directed by Ava DuVernay explores the 13th Amendment to the Constitution and explores the evolution of mass incarceration in the USA. 13th is a powerful, educational look at the progression of the second qualifying clause to the horrors of mass criminalization. By mixing archive footage and testimony from activists, politicians, historians, and formerly incarcerated men and women, DuVernay asks questions as to how and why the USA has become the most incarcerated nation in the world. She also looks at where the prison system is going.
13th will premiere this Friday at the New York Film Festival and marks the first time a documentary will open the festival. 13th will be released on Netflix on October 7 with a limited theatrical release.
