Moonlight opened this weekend to impressive results. The A24 film directed by Barry Jenkins grossed over $402,075 playing on just four screens.
Its average per screen was $103,685. Blue Jasmine, Precious, Birdman and last year’s The Revenant also feature in the Top 25 all-time limited-release openings.
In comparison, Boo! A Madea Halloween which opened in 2,260 theaters grossed over $27,600,000, but averaged $12,212 per theater. Jack Reacher starring Tom Cruise opened in the number 2 spot and averaged $6085 per screen, its weekend box office was $23,000,000
The film stars Trevante Rhodes, André Holland, Janelle Monáe, Naomie Harris, and Mahershala Ali. Where will the film land come Oscar time? Only time will tell.
